Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Phonics Tutoring review by Shaina in Merrillville, IN
This session was a continuation from our last session with a focus on fluency and making connections with higher texts. With the first few read alouds, I took turns reading with the student to model how to read with expression to keep your listeners engaged. She did a little better in comparison to our last session, but she still needs some work with reading with expression. She was able to make connections to most of the texts we've read. We will continue to work on her fluency during our next session. I left some books for her to practice with until then.

We continued to practice control of the writing implement while improving letter writing using a model. We reread a short book, allowing the student to fill in appropriate words.

Phonics Tutoring review by Brian in Merrillville, IN
This session allowed the student an opportunity to continue to develop her reading skills with support. For the first part of the session, the student read silently to herself. She then read out loud for a period of 10 minutes. The remaining part of the session, the student and the tutor engaged in online reading activities to help her strengthen her decoding skills. The student and the tutor created an online crossword puzzle, and the student was asked to complete the assignment.

Phonics Tutoring review by Charley in Merrillville, IN
He is doing really well so far. In this session, we covered literature interpretation to prepare for an upcoming essay. For his essay, he has to interpret a music video for any hidden meaning. We devoted the session to selecting and interpreting the music video. He still struggles with interpretation. He is very quick to grasp the meaning behind a piece of literature but struggles with finding specific evidence in the piece. He is making progress, though. He seemed excited about this assignment. He likes music, and I think he found it more interesting to be working with a song than with a short story. We had a lot of fun picking and analyzing the music video. We covered more strategies for literature analysis. He seems to be picking skills up very quickly. I left him with instructions to finish analysis and begin drafting an outline for his paper. I am very excited to get started on this assignment.

Phonics Tutoring review by Abby in Merrillville, IN
He is working on selecting a topic to research, finding reliable sources of information, and citing these sources correctly so that he can go on to write a composition on this topic. At our last lesson, we looked at the page in the packet I had given him that gave him a choice of using online or print sources. The directions said he was to choose three sources. He selected only one source, since he felt he had found all the information he needed at this one website to be ready to write. I explained that using multiple sources is a way to check that there are no conflicts in content among them. I also reminded him that following directions is a very important part of any assignment. He is going to find two more sources for our lesson next Sunday, and then read the information he finds so that he can write his composition.

Phonics Tutoring review by Tina in Merrillville, IN
He read a quick easy reader. We then worked on identifying and sorting long and short vowel and the pattern oa in words. He started reading Shrunken Head, but it really wasn't for him (too mushy) also the reading level was a bit high. So, we did a spelling game and 5-10 minutes on adding up to 99.
