Pre-Calculus Tutoring review by Spencer in Calumet City, IL
Worked with student to prepare for upcoming mid-term. Went through example problems in her review packed. Included finding asymptotes, discontinuities and zeroes of functions. Found local and absolute minima/maxima. Solved for roots of polynomials and graphed some functions. Student seemed to gain more confidence as we did problems, and was more comfortable with the material.

Today, we worked on law of sine/cosine and bearings. We started by going through the different cases you should use law of sine or law of cosine. Once the student understood the limitations of each law, we practiced some problems. He quickly started getting comfortable with these problems. We worked some of the more difficult law of sine/cosine word problems involving more than 1 triangle. The hardest part of these problems (as with most word problems) is taking the info from the question and creating an accurate model. Overall, he was doing fairly well with these problems. He needs some more practice and will contact me next week if he needs another session.

This session, we did an overview of the basic rules for exponentials and logarithms. A log is the inverse function of an exp. We also discussed rules for adding and multiplying. We then reviewed some examples of exponential growth and decay. We then looked at some physics problems involving acceleration in the opposite direction of motion, etc.

We had a very solid review session today for the student's upcoming test. She had done a great deal of work on her own, so she was in very good shape to begin with. We spent a good amount of time working on figuring out the best way to calculate a function's domain, eventually settling on a strategy of setting the function equal to zero and solving. We will then then plug in values to determine which of the established ranges are part of the domain and which are not. We also reviewed circle equations. I was able to provide the proof of the equation, relating it to the Pythagorean Theorem. Lastly, we had the opportunity to review synthetic division and long division of polynomials. I believe the student is in very good shape for her test!

We went through the student's worksheet for precalculus. It was about trigonometry and different functions with their properties. I explained the concept to him and asked him to solve several questions. He knew them, and he was able to solve them by himself. He is doing great.
