Session Summaries by Physiology Tutors

Physiology Tutoring review by Laurie in Merrillville, IN
Today's session focused on glycogen metabolism. We discussed the difference in glycogenesis versus glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis versus glycolysis. We discussed the roles of glucagon and epinephrine in glycogen metabolism, especially as it affects the liver cells versus the muscle cells. We discussed the four enzymes necessary for gluconeogenesis to occur -- to bypass the three irreversible reactions of glycolysis. We discussed the enzymes necessary for glycogenolysis and how different enzymes were needed to break straight chains and branched chains of glycogen. We contrasted the fact that the liver can release free glucose into the bloodstream, but the muscle cells cannot because they lack the glucose-6-phosphatase enzyme. We discussed the enzymes necessary for glycogen synthesis (glycogenesis) and the role of UDP-glucose in this process.

Today's session was mostly focused on chemistry, since the last one was so math heavy. We worked on learning all of the chemical symbols, converting units (mostly between mass and moles), and a little bit of how naming works in chemistry. After the chemistry, I covered a little bit of finding the area of some harder shapes using a couple different triangle rules. This was a lot of information for an hour and a half, so next time will do quite a bit of review in order to help solidify this information.

Today's session was quite effective. The student learned the basic concepts in Chapter 7 of the Statics class, which covers method of sections in order to solve for the normal force, shear force, and bending moment when a cut was made. These types of problems require time, work, and practice. After a couple of problems, I feel that the student has demonstrated his understanding of solving for these kind of questions. With every session, I try to suggest common organization skills and common ideas for how to solve these type of questions.

Physiology Tutoring review by Nagapoornima in Merrillville, IN
Today's session went really well. The student felt pretty good about her exam last week and seems to be feeling confident going into the next unit. She has a very good understanding of the calculations and can utilize the correct equations, but the concepts were a little cloudier for her. When we went over the concepts, however, she understood them quickly and was able to apply them to the equations. We are going to meet again on Sunday and discuss the rest of the unit prior to her exam on Tuesday.

Physiology Tutoring review by Nessim in Merrillville, IN
Today's session with the student followed the same structure as the previous one. I sent her a couple of pharmacology questions through email, and she worked through them throughout the week. During the session, we reviewed all the questions and discussed her method of approach and what needed to be improved. Her approach to each question has changed since when we started and she had a better systematic strategy that is helping her analyze and interpret the questions more efficiently. We will meet again this week and continue reviewing practice problems.

Physiology Tutoring review by Taylor in Merrillville, IN
Today's session with the student was focused on a wide topical overview in preparation for the exam he is about to take. He was well versed on the topics we covered and after very brief refreshers he was consistently able to solve problems with minimal assistance from me. I am confident that he will perform well on his test.
