I have privately and group tutored all ages of students around the world. I have traveled around the world twice and am on my third passport. I currently teach Social Studies at an alternative high school. I believe a solid foundation in literacy (reading, writing, speaking, listening) are instrumental for growth and a higher standard of living. We can all learn from each other. I value respect, willingness and a positive attitude. I like to make learning fun and meaningful. I put the information in your terms of understanding and set you up to make the connections. My favorite is when students have "ah-ha" moments, when the "light bulb goes off in their head." I believe all students learn differently and I design my instructional strategy to fit how you learn. I tutor a broad range of subjects, but my expertise is in Geography, History and ESL. I have been in the "game of school" for a long time and know Standardized Test Prep, reading for comprehension and fluency and English Language acquisition. I graduated from the University of Colorado with a BS in Business Admin and Accounting emphasis. I also received a Masters in Accounting from Regis University. During my undergrad studies I tutored a diverse group of students, in Accounting, Algebra and ESL classes.I understand how it feels to have challenges understanding a course, and because I've experienced this, I want the opportunity to encourage, guide and help students propel in the classes they are struggling with. Throughout college and my two years as a math teacher, I found that there isn't one best teaching method. Instead, each student is unique and this reflects in their learning style. A good teacher will be able to change strategies to accommodate for differences in learning styles. I previously worked as a credit recovery online teacher in Denver, CO, and San Diego, CA. I recently moved to Portland with my husband and am hoping to return to teaching once the pandemic is over next year. Growing up as the oldest of five kids, I've spent a large part of my life being a tutor for my siblings. This helped me develop my teaching skills at a young age, and served me well when I became a recitation instructor at University of Colorado Denver, teaching upper-division genetics. My year-long tenure there only deepened my love of teaching and helped me strengthen my abilities to educate many different styles of learners. I am a Senior at the University of Colorado Denver, majoring in History and Teacher Education in Social Studies at the Secondary level (Middle and High School). I expect to complete my Bachelor's program in Spring 2016, and anticipate receiving my Colorado Teaching Certification in Spring 2017. Although I have not yet ruled out Graduate School, I currently intend to teach High School History upon completing my certification.Though most of my tutoring experience has been with Undergraduates at the collegiate level, I have on occasion worked with younger students. I tend to encounter the same difficulties with all History students, regardless of their age or grade. They tell me that History is boring, and they don't consider it relevant to their lives. My goal is to change that perception by finding parallels between the subject matter and the modern world. History is so much more than a list of names and dates to be memorized. In order to truly understand the modern world one must be aware of how it came to be. If I can connect historical events to issues and ideas that matter to the student they will be much more receptive to the material.

I've worked in Special Education for over 7 years. I tutored college level courses and taught independent living skills to college students with special needs (mostly autistic spectrum disorders) for 6 years before becoming a middle and high school teacher for students with unique emotional needs for two years. I am a graduate of the University of Virginia and the University of Colorado. I received my Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering and my Masters Degree in Computer Science. I have been teaching for over 30 years. I started teaching when I was living overseas with my husband and teaching was one of the few jobs available. I found out that I love teaching, so I continued teaching when we returned to the United States first at the community college level but then at the middle and high school level as I followed my children's progress through school. As a military family we moved 16 times, so I have traveled extensively. Although I have taught a variety of subjects, my passion is computer science. I love working with students, and I feel a great sense of accomplishment when they master new material. I believe living is learning, and I care deeply that my students are successful. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, walking, and spoiling our cat.

I am currently a third year dental student at the CU Dental School and I would one day love to become a Pediatric dentist! I absolutely love working with kids and I think that becoming a teacher/tutor can be a valuable tool to one day use in my practice. Although I have a strong background in math and science, I also love to read and even dabble in some Spanish. I can work with all age groups and I think every student can teach me something as well! I am a graduate of University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana where I received my Bachelor degree in Math and Computer Science. I also earned my master degree from the University of Colorado-Denver in secondary mathematics teaching. I worked at big companies as a computer programmer and software companies in many roles. Then I switched careers and taught math and computer science at the high school level for many more years. In my experience helping students in those logical parts of the brain is natural and everybody can think logically. And when we are successful, it makes you feel proud and good inside. And I love that feeling. My teaching and tutoring is try try try. The goal is getting good results because it is not how fast or how perfect our solutions are, it is the fun along the way and fun of learning.
