I've been teaching and coaching math and robotics for more than 10 years, in conjunction with over 20 years of programming and software QA. I love helping people find new ways of looking at problems to reveal solutions. My aptitude for math, programming and robotics stems from my true passion for music, especially music theory. I find that I'm not alone - that many of my technical colleagues share my musical leanings. Let me help you look at those tricky problems differently!

Reduced assignment error rate 90%, improved performance 55%... These are just two of my many accomplishments over the last year. Are you looking to improve you or your student's performance in school? As an academic enthusiast, I believe that every student is capable of performing at a high level. Specializing in Algebra 1, Math, Business and Financial and Managerial Accounting, I wish to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is George and my goal is to advance the performance of each student using customized lessons. Getting to know each student for who they are is an essential part of teaching to understand, all while making lessons fun.
I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from CSU Fresno and a Bachelor's in English from CU Denver. I've been teaching on the college level for nearly four years, and I also work as a tutor in the Writing Center at College of the Sequoias. Throughout 2012-2013, I led writing activities for incarcerated youth in the Fresno Juvenile Justice Center. I firmly believe that, with enough practice and hard work, every student has the potential to read and write well. I tutor multiple subjects connected to English - essay editing, grammar and mechanics, writing, and ESL. I write in my free time, so I love imparting students with an appreciation of reading and writing. I also play drums in two different metal bands, and I love to ride my fixie around town.
Growing up as the oldest of five kids, I've spent a large part of my life being a tutor for my siblings. This helped me develop my teaching skills at a young age, and served me well when I became a recitation instructor at University of Colorado Denver, teaching upper-division genetics. My year-long tenure there only deepened my love of teaching and helped me strengthen my abilities to educate many different styles of learners. I also have the experience with graduate standardized testing, as I scored in the 95th percentile or above on the SAT, ACT, and MCAT.Since graduating in May with two degrees in biology and psychology, I have spent my time going through the medical school application process. During the upcoming year, I hope to help tutor those still in school not only to keep on my toes academically, but to help those who may be struggling with various subjects throughout their academic careers. There is no better feeling than watching someone have a eureka moment of understanding, and I look forward to meeting and working with new students. As a Colorado native, I love spending my free time hiking and climbing my way through the Rockies. I also enjoy playing volleyball (being 6'8" has its advantages) and teaching myself to play the guitar.

I am currently a third year dental student at the CU Dental School and I would one day love to become a Pediatric dentist! I absolutely love working with kids and I think that becoming a teacher/tutor can be a valuable tool to one day use in my practice. Although I have a strong background in math and science, I also love to read and even dabble in some Spanish. I can work with all age groups and I think every student can teach me something as well! Learning how to relate to kids and giving them insight on how to solve problems can be very rewarding!
I believe that all students can learn and achieve when instruction is tailored to their strengths, and strong foundational skills are built.
I previously worked as a credit recovery online teacher in Denver, CO, and San Diego, CA. I recently moved to Portland with my husband and am hoping to return to teaching once the pandemic is over next year. In the meantime, I want to continue working with students in my community, doing what I love best: teaching!

I graduated with my Bachelor's Degree in Communication from the University of South Florida, and went on to obtain my Master's Degree from the University of Colorado. My teaching and tutoring experience has been varied and extensive, with both in-person and online formats. I began by teaching Public Speaking classes at the local university. I later transitioned into teaching English, Grammar, and rudimentary Latin to Elementary and Middle School students for several years. My most recent experience as a teacher and tutor was as an online, one-on-one ESL teacher for over 500 students in another country. I enjoy and am passionate about teaching the subjects of Reading, Grammar, Public Speaking, and Study/Organizational Skills.
