My name is Andrew Heng, and I graduated from the University of California, Irvine in 2015. I am currently pursuing a career as a physician and will be applying to medical school in 2017. I enjoy meeting people of all ages and backgrounds and learning about their lives and experiences. I have always been an introspective person, and have constantly strived to improve myself as a person, along with the people that I choose to surround myself with. I hope to pass along the skills and knowledge that I have accumulated in my own academic path to younger students to help them succeed in their educational endeavors.

Q & A

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that every student learns differently and requires certain teaching methods in order to learn material efficiently.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I think that I would be sure to introduce myself and have the student introduce himself or herself. I would try to foster a safe environment in which the student feels comfortable in asking me whatever questions he or she may have. I would also reiterate the importance of telling me when to slow down or elaborate on topics when needed.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a student become an independent learner by teaching them my own personal tips and tricks when it comes to studying. I would then tell them how I developed or learned these skills in hopes that they too would be able to become independent learners.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would be sure to try to calm a frustrated student who is losing motivation and reiterate that every student learns at different paces. I would also try to adapt by changing my teaching methods in order to find the most efficient way for the student to learn.
