Finance Tutoring review by John in Sandy, UT
We spent the time focusing on the writing assignment the student had for his art class. We studied the vocabulary given. He had no problem absorbing the concepts and coming up with sentences conveying their meaning. I had to "plant some seeds" creatively in order for him to expand these sentences into the two-page written assignment about life in ancient Italy. Once we got going, he didn't have any problem coming up with some ideas of his own about what life might have been like in ancient Pompeii. I helped him organize his paragraphs a bit and gave him lots of encouragement. The piece was 1 and 3/4 pages by the end of the session, which he claims is sufficient for this assignment. He may have some more ideas to add to the assignment after he has visited the museum. I was glad to see him incorporating material from class in the piece (regarding dogs and mosaic subject matter in ancient Pompeii).

The student and I went over a few questions he missed on his first midterm exam. The most important concept covered here was finding the average value of a function over a given subset of its domain. After these we moved on to finding domain and range, and horizontal and vertical asymptotes of rational functions.

Today, we worked on solving systems of equations. The student needs to remember to always be careful with negatives and to be careful when copying the equations from one line to the next. Overall, math is going well for her this term.

Finance Tutoring review by Mary in Sandy, UT
We did practice SAT questions relating to quadratic functions. Some things to remember are: 1) When in doubt, move all terms to one side of a quadratic equation. 2) Look at the answer choices. If any are irrational, you'll need to use the quadratic formula. 3) If the question is about the vertex, you'll likely need to convert the equation to vertex form. Practice these problems (where you'll have to complete the square). Also, if you have any math question requiring trial and error (substitution), start with a value in the middle and work your way up or down accordingly as needed. The student is always a pleasure to work with. She has plenty of practice problems. It would be ideal if she could try these out ahead of time (as she has been doing). See you next Sunday!

Finance Tutoring review by Kameco in Sandy, UT
We practiced building words and spelling of words that the students knew but struggle with correctly spelling with confidence. We rotated each other's 21 tiles to help with confidence and spark ideas of words to spell. We then worked on multiplication facts by using flashcards in a competition setting, where both girls shined equally.
