The student had a quiz about acids the next day. We covered the following items: the definition of an acid, the properties of acids, common acids, the dissociation of acids in water, reactions of acids with metals, pH, buffers, and chemicals that can act as both an acid and a base. The student mainly struggled with recognizing acids and bases; however, once he did, he had almost no trouble writing out the reaction. I think he enjoyed the session. He seemed particularly interested in the role of acids in our everyday lives. He could easily remember common acids like battery acid and HCl when they were applied to daily life situations. I suggested that the student try making flashcards to help him study for his upcoming test. We made one together during the session so that he could get an idea of how to make them.

We went through some of her assigned homework together, including a simple mass spectrometer problem. I think she has a pretty good understanding of this topic.
