Session Summaries by Latin Tutors

Latin Tutoring review by Kerry in Layton, UT
The student did really well this evening! We changed things up a bit this week and tackled the "How the Romans Expressed Dates" explanation/exercise set. The student jumped right into it and handled this rather complex material with ease. Thanks so much for your great, hard work tonight.

Latin Tutoring review by Ariela in Layton, UT
Today we started with a quick review of conjugating verbs in the present and imperfect tense. Then we spent the rest of the session translating a passage, and again he struggled massively, even when I was feeding him the answers both verbally and written in the document editor. We will continue to work on this next session.

We continued our lesson on numbers, and the students have the Doxology memorized. When we meet tomorrow, we will be doing a big review, since they are now 10 lessons in.

Latin Tutoring review by Mark in Layton, UT
We covered the indicative case: pluperfect, perfect, imperfect, present, future, and future perfect. We also covered the subjective, genitive, dative, accusative, and ablative cases in the first declension and also the fifth declension in Latin. We then went over the concept of Indirect Statement vs. Direct Statement in Latin; specifically, that Latin uses an accusative construction with indirect statement, and I explained the infinitive and the relationship between the infinitive and the main verb: present infinitive is the same time as the main verb, perfect infinitive is the time before the main verb, future infinitive is the time after the main verb. We then went over some of the exercitationes in Chapter 25 of his textbook. The student is encouraged to constantly quiz and requiz himself with the Summarium Formarum and the Chapter 25 Vocabulary. The student will do very well because he is extremely motivated so far.

Latin Tutoring review by Lorna in Layton, UT
We read a passage from Sallust. The student did an excellent job reading it without having a chance to see it in advance! I was very impressed. We discussed different grammatical constructions as they came up. I emailed him (via parent) the next passage, and he will prepare the remainder of the passage for next time.

Latin Tutoring review by Kristie in Layton, UT
We reviewed Chapter 26 on the comparative and superlative forms of adjectives. The student did very well on her homework assignment. She remembered the tiny details about comparison, etc. from our last meeting. Bravissimo! We basically sight translated for the rest of the session. She has gotten so much more comfortable with that! I am so happy! She did very well with Sententiae Antiquae, which reviewed a lot of grammar and I asked her grammar questions about them as well, which she was able to correctly answer. She actually translated selections from Caesar and Martial today!
