A teacher's role is to impart knowledge, however along the way it gets lost in translation. I want to be that translator, to fill in those missing gaps so that everyone is not hindered in any way. My childhood overseas meant that I started out with a traditional Chinese education, before switching to the British curriculum and then finally ending in American. I often tutored my peers and others younger than me at all stages, proving that I can adjust to multiple teaching styles and approaches. I have a deep passion for the sciences, and I hope that you will come to know and share my love for them through learning and understanding.

I am in my 29th year of teaching. I currently teach 8th grade English. Before teaching, I was an undergraduate student at Baylor University in Waco, TX. I graduated with a bachelor's degree in Music Education in 1994 (I was a violin major). Several years down the road in 2007, I decided to go through the Master's program offered by PISD at the time, and I graduated with a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction. My philosophy of teaching is to value the commitment of being an educator in all its glory. While my students may not remember their parts of speech, they will; however, remember how I made them feel in my classroom. Thus, one of my primary objectives at the beginning of each school year is to build relationships with both my parents and my students, because students don't learn from teachers they don't like!

When working with students struggling in this area, I like to help them connect with the concepts through real life application and then break down the main points to increase understanding rather than memorization. My goal is to help learners build their science foundation one lesson at a time so they will get to a point where science just makes sense!

I am a graduate from Baylor University, located in Waco, Texas. I received a Bachelor of Arts in French as well as in International Studies. I tutored many of my colleagues during my time at Baylor. I also volunteered my time as a tutor at the local middle school while I was in high school. I tutor in French, a subject I am incredibly passionate about. I initially studied French to get in touch with my French heritage and fell in love with francophone cultures, literature, and more recently, linguistics. I enjoy tutoring in French not only because of my personal enjoyment of the subject, but also because I understand all of the advantages of being proficient in a foreign language. Not only does learning a foreign language allow the ability to communicate with thousands of people in their native or socio-political tongue, but it also allows people to think and learn in an engaging way that is unique to language. There is a mix of patterns as well as abstract thought, working different areas of the brain. The idea of tutoring a subject that has so many complexities and benefits truly excites me. As a tutor, I generally have two goals. First and foremost, I provide individual attention to the pupil according to their individual learning style(s) and needs. I also tend to teach material in a way that will assist them in future lessons, primarily by revealing patterns rather than stressing memorization. Additionally, I recognize the reality of a student needing to improve their grades. My technique to improve grades involves a review of past tests and homework to develop an understanding of the teacher’s primary learning goals. This also helps me to get an idea of a pupil’s thought processes. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, baking, and traveling both around the world and around this amazing country, both for business and for pleasure.

My graduate exhibition combined photography and installation sculptural work. In 2018 I also earned a CELTA credential from Cambridge University, formally known as "Certificate for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages", Level 5.From April 2019 through July 2021 I taught English with a large private school in Viet Nam. My school, ILA Academy, has more than 30 locations throughout Viet Nam with students aged pre-K through 12. Our teaching is based upon the CELTA principles of using mostly English at the graded level of students as assessed. As COVID-19 arrived in February 2020, we experienced intermittent school closures thereafter. Therefore, I also have experience teaching remotely. Additionally, I tutored private students in a home setting apart from my school and taught adult learners in United States whose first languages are not English.I strive to pair lessons in English with other academic disciplines, such as observing the natural world, geology, art, business, scientific wonders and travel. This is done with great sensitivity to the level of language proficiency between my students and me. I place a high value on the use of visual tools and pronunciation exercise designed to increase proficiency in auditory comprehension and speaking in complete sentences.I am a firm proponent of education, believing it to be absolutely necessary for an improved quality of life, and I try to impart this appreciation to all of my students. In my spare time, I enjoy teaching art, making art, vegetable gardening, cooking and comedy.

I am currently a senior at Baylor University working towards a degree in health science studies, with a focus in pre-medicine. I am very passionate about the sciences and enjoy tutoring biology, physiology, and anatomy.I am passionate about tutoring because I feel that every student should be able to have access to adequate assistance outside of school. With an increasingly full public school system today in need of some serious reform, I believe that personal and in-group tutoring as supplemental instruction are crucial to allowing students to receive the personalized attention they need for success. Getting help outside of school is one of the first steps to being proactive in a student's academic journey, and improvement as well as new enthusiasm upon gained understanding early on in the academic journey can open doors of opportunity not only to universities and graduate programs, but also inside the mind of the student as growth and steady work ethic can be inspired by a positive learning experience. As a tutor, one has a direct impact on the educational experience of a student, and a positive one can empower and enable students to get help where they need it, as well as the confidence and positive foresight to continue on in time of difficulty. In light of this, I will try my best to make sure that every student I encounter gains an opportunity to have such a positive experience. By providing the right motivation to succeed, and applying materials learned to the real world, I hope to instill in students inspiration to gain knowledge not only for academic success, but to gain insight on the way the world functions around them. Knowledge truly is power, and being a tutor is the perfect way I can spread this power in the ways I can.

"In her classroom our speculations ranged the world. She breathed curiosity into us so that each day we came with new questions, new ideas, cupped and shielded in our hands like captured fireflies. When she left us, we were sad; but the light did not go out. She had written her indelible signature on our minds. I have had lots of teachers who taught me soon forgotten things; but only a few who created in me a new energy, a new direction. I suppose I am the unwritten manuscript of such a person. What deathless power lies in the hands of such a teacher." John SteinbeckI chose teaching as a profession for all of those reasons. I want to share my love of the social sciences with the students and perhaps inspire them to pursue careers in that wide discipline. I want to leave my job each day with the knowledge that I have done something good. But more than anything else, I want to motivate my students to always chase after knowledge.
