Session Summaries by Microbiology Tutors

Microbiology Tutoring review by Phillip in Layton, UT
Tonight was our last session until the summer. The student indicated that he was interested continuing our session over the summer for his SAT 2 biology. We finished reviewing the text and spent more time reviewing the response questions. He still had a few concepts he was unfamiliar with. Therefore, I elaborated on these concepts to help him understand. I am absolutely confident that he is going to do well on the exam. He worked harder than anybody to prepare for it! I am very proud of him for sticking with me for many long hours almost everyday. It was a true pleasure working with him, and I look forward to working with him during the summer.

Microbiology Tutoring review by Melody in Layton, UT
We went over a homework assignment focusing on the speed of light, color mixing (of light and pigment), and angles of reflection and refraction. The student had a quick understanding of the material and also thought it through as she asked me more "why" questions about the more complex science behind the concepts she's learning. (A lot of high school physics does not make sense without the more complex concepts in future study.) The time went by quickly because we were both so engaged in the material.

Microbiology Tutoring review by Lindsey in Layton, UT
This session was a mass review for her upcoming final on Friday. We covered a review of the stages of embryology as well as a review of hormones. The student has been given her study guide, and I will continue to assist her with any questions/pointers. Overall great session.

Microbiology Tutoring review by Christina in Layton, UT
The student and I reviewed converting units - g to mols and mols to g. We also reviewed percent composition of compounds, percent yield of reactions, balancing equations to find mol ratios, molecular and empirical formulas of compounds given their percentages and/or amounts, and a brief overview of stoichiometry. The student's class has not gone over stoichiometry, but we were both wondering if it might be on the standardized test, so we went over a few simple problems to get her used to seeing the types of questions that may be asked and how to solve them. She did great!

We completed the test on Chapter 16 Sound and Waves, which completes the materials outstanding for the student. At this point we need to study for the comprehensive final, which his physics teacher has indicated we may administer at home with the tutor as proctor. Our next meeting will be on Thursday, at which time our focus will shift to completing the remaining assessment on Radicals and Rationals, and moving on to Unit 7-- Data and Statistics.

Microbiology Tutoring review by Neil in Layton, UT
The student and I had a good session. He is knuckling down and studying for finals next week. We spent most of this session working through chemistry problems. He has made huge improvements in stoichiometry and determining chemical reactions. We did notice some weakness that should be addressed in dealing with molarity and concentration problems. He should find examples from previous homework problems and the textbook in order to help him with those types of problems. Our next session is scheduled for Sunday.
