Session Summaries by Essay Editing Tutors

Essay Editing Tutoring review by Hadiya in Layton, UT
This session began with homework review. We reviewed vocabulary terms and idioms that she had assigned for homework. Next, I asked her comprehension questions based on a news article that she listened to. She understood most of my questions, but did struggle with the more advanced vocabulary terms. Next, we did sentence corrections. Lastly, we did a speaking activity. I gave her a topic, gave her thinking time, then had her respond.

The student went up two reading levels!!! We started a new book and the student is doing a great job making predictions. She still occasionally struggles with interpreting information when the book uses unfamiliar vocabulary words and/or idioms. She needs to continue to work on using context to determine the meaning of unknown words. She also needs to pay attention to words that she does not know and attempt to figure out the meaning. The student has a tendency to read straight through, even when she doesn't know the words or reads the sentence incorrectly.

Essay Editing Tutoring review by Jessica in Layton, UT
We worked on a review of his flashcards, and he did the best he has so far! The student only missed 3 cards, and he seemed much more confident and speedy in his answers for the rest of the cards. We also went over his summary and prediction from "Treasure Hunters," which he prepares outside of lessons. His comprehension is improving, and the student is making more detailed predictions. Finally, we ended with reading some Batman. We learned new vocabulary words such as psychiatrist and grief, and old words came up again such as foe and orchestrated.

We had a very successful session. I tried a readers' theater piece with the student, and it turns out that he loves it (he didn't want to end before we finished the piece!). This might be an avenue to get him doing more fluency practice -- I will think about it and see what I can come up with for home.

Essay Editing Tutoring review by Rachel in Layton, UT
Yesterday, the student and I started the writing process for his research project. We started a review of an outline and rough draft of a few paragraphs. My focus here was getting him to think about the purpose of each paragraph and to plan it out. I also asked him to practice his spelling and grammar as he was writing. We will keep working on this!

Essay Editing Tutoring review by Michael in Layton, UT
We had great lessons this time around! Student A took a bit to get going, but soon he was writing good stuff with almost no help from me. I just spurred his imagination a bit and he did the rest. He wrote the whole first section of his new story, and we talked a lot about what's going to happen next. He seems so excited about it. His homework is to write all of the next chapter of his story, and read a few more chapters of his book and remember them when I ask questions about it. Student B did his homework, too. It was to make up another character for his story. He came up with some pretty good stuff on his own, and I helped him flesh it out and wrote some more with him as well. His homework is to finish the Captain Underpants book he's reading and also finish writing the introduction to his story (he's just describing the characters).
