Session Summaries by Reading Tutors

Reading Tutoring review by Catie in Portland, OR
Today we finished reading the chapter book that we have been working on together. After we finished reading, we talked about how to write a summary of what we read. The student wrote a summary with my help. Then, we worked on the sight words that I had given him and not only talked about how to pronounce them but really focused on what the words meant as well. Then, we began working more on a comprehension activity from a level M book that we have been reading. He is showing great improvement.

Reading Tutoring review by Jennifer in Portland, OR
I asked the student to read the story, which is a repetitive story with different animal names. I wanted to see if she would use the pictures to read the animal names she didn't know, which she did. I feel like her reading has improved since I began working with her and I hope she keeps practicing. Afterward, we worked on some beginning sound reviews, and then read the next story. The student has taken to having us alternately read words, deferring to me for ones she doesn't know, but I'm impressed with her initiative--she definitely wants to read, and she matches fluency modeling well, too.

Reading Tutoring review by Sherry in Portland, OR
The student spent 1 hour on reading. He read 4 short essays from his workbook and learned to read for facts. He also learned how to brainstorm for ideas when writing. He was assigned essays 3-6 from Section 1 of his workbook for homework. The student also worked on some math. He worked page 3 from the math workbook (timed) and did well. We discussed approaches to word problems and how to discern the correct function to arrive at a solution. He was assigned problem rows 1 and 2, page 1 of his workbook and will also complete page 2 word problems for homework.

Reading Tutoring review by Molly in Portland, OR
Today, we went over old sight words and he was very quick to read them and remembered them very well. We then worked on his workbook and he showed a great improvement in comprehension and was able to apply what he read and predict what comes next. His fluency is improving.

The student and I followed our previous programming. We started with some assisted/independent reading, then we moved on to some phonics and sight word instruction. We ended with some writing activities from a workbook her mother has.

Reading Tutoring review by Richard in Portland, OR
Continued adding to and working with our sight vocabulary cards - I left the cards with the student so he can study them over the week. We're trying out a new technique to help the student slow down and attack words that he doesn't know by sight: if he's reading and comes across a word he doesn't know, he tries reading it twice, and from there we break it down, or, with complex words, I read the word to him and add it to our sight cards. We'll apply this technique in future sessions. We also reviewed silent "e" words, which the student knows well.
