GRE Tutoring review by Steven in Portland, OR
We first went over the homework I had assigned, which consisted of easy and medium level math questions, as well as some writing. On the math she did very will on the easy questions and okay on the medium ones. We went over the ones she got wrong and discussed how to better attack them on the test. We then moved to the writing section. We looked over how to analyze an argument sample essays and saw the difference between the score levels. Finally I had her do some vocab and critical reading practice.

GRE Tutoring review by Matthew in Portland, OR
After quickly reviewing several very minor issues that the student had with factoring, we turned to looking at the overall problems that he was having with fractions and percentages. We decided that it was best to develop his rudimentary skills, for he always makes quick progress once he has recalled these foundations. Therefore, we spent the session doing an intensive lesson on fraction operations as well as the operations appropriate to percentage problems. I assigned a set of "nuts and bolts" problems, instructing him to return to the book after doing those. We did review several of the book's percentage problems in order to verify that he is able to do them.

GRE Tutoring review by Sonya in Portland, OR
Today, we went through the online practice test the student took over the weekend. Her scores were not as high as she hoped, and so we talked about some common reasons this can happen (taking the test in a new format, small errors, etc.) Going through the problems, we identified patterns of error. The student still needs to enhance her vocab and work on reading the questions carefully for the Verbal section. For the math section, she needs a review of ratios and percentages. We set out a plan to accomplish this in the time left. Lastly, in order to get everything done we wanted for this section, we ran 45 minutes long. In order to compensate, she's going to have a shorter tutoring section on Wednesday (the day before the test) to serve as a quick refresher that keeps the hours ultimately even without wearing her out last minute. Both of us found this a suitable arrangement.

GRE Tutoring review by Brian in Portland, OR
I worked on combinations and permutations with student 1. We went over why the set of all possible combinations is #!, where # is the number of elements that are being rearranged. #!/(#-n)! is the number of combinations possible when n out of # possible items are chosen from a set. #!/((#-n)!(n!)) is the number of possible combinations when the order of elements in the set doesn't matter. With both students, I worked on interpreting reading comprehension questions. They both have to do some investigation on the best way to approach these questions. In particular, how much reading to do before trying to answer the questions. I strongly recommended reading at least one question before reading the passage so as to have a guide to the kinds of material they are looking for.
