Microbiology Tutoring review by Anna in Portland, OR
The student and I covered all of her chapter on mitosis, which will be tested on this week. We also discussed studying techniques to help her as she prepares for the exam. One of her strengths is the ability to grasp the big picture concepts.

Microbiology Tutoring review by Zachary in Portland, OR
Today we prepared for the student's lecture exam. We covered one problem from her practice problems that she was questioning, but mostly practice exams. These practice exams covered a great depth and I think she understands the majority of it. We reasoned carefully through each question and I discussed how to reason through them. She picks up on these fairly quick and we discussed how to attack problems and figure out when and what equations to use.

First session with the student today. We discussed goals for her physics course. She feels fairly confident with most of the material. We reviewed some SHM and Waves and then worked through several problems from her book. She would like to review practice problems from the exam to get ready for the test in a few weeks.

Microbiology Tutoring review by Sam in Portland, OR
The student and I covered a lot of material from the molecular genetics chapter but are yet to finish it due to the large amount of high-yield information in this chapter. We covered up to translation of protein from mRNA. We will finish reviewing this chapter Tuesday in addition to completing heredity. He is very bright and I'm confident we can do well on this exam, as long as he stays diligent and does not get over confident.

Microbiology Tutoring review by Talia in Portland, OR
The student's class moved on from waves & optics to electrostatics. I like to start this section by relating the fundamental law in electrostatics, Coulomb's Law, to a concept that physics students have learned in previous sections that may seem more familiar to them. To do this, I remind the student of gravitational force, what type of force it is, and the equation that is used to find the magnitude of this force. Coulomb's law is set up almost exactly like this force of gravity equation with the exception of using charge & distance to determine force, rather than using mass & distance. Also, I note that gravitational force is solely an attractive force while electric force can be either attractive or repulsive in nature. The student and I discussed what is meant by "electric field", how to represent these fields on paper, the factors affecting the fields as well as relevant equations pertaining to electric fields. I gave her some helpful tricks to determine the direction a charge would move in a field as well as how to look at a field diagram to determine where the field is strongest/weakest. She grasped all the concepts very quickly for this section, so after going over all relevant information, we jumped into her homework problems, most of which she had already completed. Also, the student has told me that she has continually performed ahead of her class on all tests so we talked a bit about her moving on with the second year physics the following semester if that is something she is interested in.

Microbiology Tutoring review by Alan in Portland, OR
Today, the student and I had a 3 hour session in order to help him prepare for his upcoming biology exam on Tuesday. We reviewed the study guide that his teacher provided. I structured the tutoring session by letting him explain the concepts that were going to be covered. This was to ensure that he could articulate the concepts and experiments well. We covered topics in molecular biology (DNA replication, Transcription/Translation, and regulation of gene expression).
