How can a tutor help your child master the ISEE?

Are you thinking about putting your child in a private school? If your child is at the middle school or high school level, the private school of your choice may probably require the Independent School Entrance Examination, also called the ISEE, for admission. And, if the school is an elite or prestigious one, your child may have to do very well on this exam.

This standardized test assesses your child's skills and ranks her/his achievement and reasoning skills among others in the same grade. It's an advanced admission assessment, used by more than 1,200 independent schools across the globe. Many parents choose tutors to help their kids excel on this test. The educational directors at Varsity Tutors may connect you with tutors in Portland, OR, who are skilled at helping students prepare for the ISEE.

ISEE Tutoring review by Abbi in Portland, OR
We talked about the essay strategies and they types of prompts. He was able to write a really good essay. I think he surprised himself that by taking his time and keeping calm, he could write something really good. We will continue to work on the stress and how to stay calm. He also did a vocabulary practice and I wrote down words he didn't know. Then we finished off with some arithmetic practice.

The students finished the last two sections of their test (not the essay) on their own during the week. Once again, math is a priority. We began to look over some of the math skills. We went over fraction rules as well as GCF and LCM.

ISEE Tutoring review by Katie in Portland, OR
We spent the time reviewing the student's practice test (which he had done very well with) and discussing strategies. I tried to remind him that this test should have proven that he knows his concepts. I left the student with a worksheet for percent/fraction/decimal conversions for a little extra practice if he feels that he needs it. The last practice test boosted his confidence, and so long as he can keep the pressure off himself, he'll be in great shape for this weekend. He's worked hard with me and I'm proud of what he's done!

ISEE Tutoring review by Bryan in Portland, OR
We went over several of the essays that the student planned out and one that he wrote. His essays are definitely improving. We also did some math, some reading, and some vocab. The trick now is getting him to buy-in on checking over his work carefully.

ISEE Tutoring review by Layla in Portland, OR
This session we worked primarily on both reading comprehension and math topics. In particular, we worked with mixed numbers and fraction concepts to add and subtract fractions. We used concrete examples to show how mixed numbers and improper fractions are related. During the second part of the session, we reviewed vocabulary, worked on analogies and reading comprehension. We completed practice questions for the test and discussed some strategies for independently assessing whether or not answers are correct. During the reading comprehension passages, I focused questioning around authors purpose, story elements, and text structures. When we discussed the passage prior to answering the questions, the student did well.
