How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would try to relate the concept being taught to something familiar or tangible to get them excited/engaged.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would use both formative and summative assessments to determine if students are learning the material.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I would highlight and narrate the positive growth they make and continue to encourage them to set goals.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Assessments and observations are my primary methods for evaluating students' needs. I use this data to determine my course of action with them.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I constantly assess their learning throughout a unit to determine what areas they need support in and which areas they can move on from.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
I use traditional materials (paper, pencils, worksheets) in addition to technological resources (phone, tablet, apps). I will use whatever will engage my students and help them grasp the concepts being taught.
What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that all students can learn, and skillful educators have to have strategies to meet the needs of all types of learners.
