Session Summaries by Calculus Tutors

Calculus Tutoring review by Daniel in Portland, OR
Finished up with optimization. Finding critical points. Second derivatives. The student made good progress since the last session, but he is still having trouble with word problems. In particular with figuring out how to write the equation hidden in the question.

Calculus Tutoring review by Jennifer in Portland, OR
We reviewed basic derivatives and how they relate to tangent lines, as well as the product and quotient rules. The student seemed very adept at applying these concepts, although some of the trickier problems require more concentration. We went through most of her homework for the week, and also discussed the PSAT and the scholarship program a bit.

Calculus Tutoring review by Darla in Portland, OR
I met with the student today at the University library from 2:30 PM until 4:00 PM. She has a calculus test, so we reviewed all topics that will be covered on the test, including limits, derivatives (properties, techniques of differentiation, product rule, chain rule, and quotient rule), and optimization and graphing. We are meeting next on Tuesday, October 22, at 5:30 PM.

Calculus Tutoring review by Carolyn in Portland, OR
We practiced using the chain rule, and went back a bit to practice the product and quotient rule, and finding the derivative of exponential functions. Then we talked about how to find a second derivative and what word problems were asking him to do. He had a better grasp on these concepts, especially the second derivative, by the time our session ended.

Calculus Tutoring review by Peter in Portland, OR
The student and I spoke about limits in calculus. We discussed what happens as a limit approaches positive or negative infinite. We also talked about the definition of continuity and how to know whether a function is continuous or not. We ended with biology and talked about actin, a large polymer found in cells. We discussed how actin is used in the motility of different molecules around a cell. Then we talked about the actual process that involves calcium, troponin, ATP, actin, and myosin. Concerning calculus, the student understands continuity and limits much better.

Calculus Tutoring review by Henry in Portland, OR
We reviewed limits, derivatives of trig functions, natural log functions, and squeeze theorem. We also went over a few related rates problems, which the student was able to do with little assistance. He is also doing very well with implicit differentiation.
