Session Summaries by Physiology Tutors

Physiology Tutoring review by Alan in Portland, OR
Today was the first session that I had with the student since spring break. We used today's session to review topics that he covered before spring break, since they had not yet covered much new material. We covered concepts in Chemical Kinetics and we worked several example problems from his teacher's notes and that I had brought as well.

Physiology Tutoring review by Talia in Portland, OR
I set up the review by asking her questions about simple harmonic motion, the types & parts of waves, the direction of wave speed, oscillations, force and acceleration in a wave and general equation knowledge. Once I saw that she had a good grasp on these topics, I asked her a series of "if, then" statements to test her conceptual knowledge on the movement of waves and what affects them. She got a little over half of these questions correct but I am not too worried since they were hard questions and she did say she needed to review these topics so at least she recognizes her level of understanding. Once we finished our review, I looked at her unit packet to see what she would be covering in the near future so that I could go ahead with teaching her about wave motion. Today we discussed interference for the first time so I built it off of our discussion on wave forms & phases. I drew her diagrams of the different types of interference, showing her what happens when we have two waves at the same place at the same time. We discussed the additive property of constructive interference and how we create a standing wave with constructive interference. We found a variety of simulations and videos to reference in our discussion on interference so that she could see an animated explanation of this phenomena. Although it was not on her study packet, we also discussed sound waves since they are a type of longitudinal wave that we experience every day. Sounds waves are also a very easy way to distinguish different types of interference as they can be audibly noticed.

Physiology Tutoring review by Randall in Portland, OR
In this session, we reviewed oxidation-reduction (redox) reactions and how do balance redox equations, using a sure-fire technique that works 100% of the time in both acidic and basic solutions. Apparently the teacher taught her students how to balance redox equations without explaining what was really going on. This void was filled in detail, and she exhibited mastery of the material very quickly. I promised her that I would share my tutorial on the subject, outlining all the relevant steps, via email.

Physiology Tutoring review by Amelia in Portland, OR
The student took a test this week on circuits which she did very well on - she got a 91%. To begin this session we began by reviewing the problems she got wrong or had questions on. Her main issue seemed to be the wording of some of the questions. We also reviewed the relevant concepts for each question. Next we completed a review sheet that she was given by her teacher that covers the topics of circuits which we completed together. Again we reviewed relevant topics and equations in reference to this including the rules for junctions in circuits. She seemed to grasp the material well and only needed minimal help.

Physiology Tutoring review by Max in Portland, OR
We covered gravitational forces, conservation of energy, and some calculus-based physics. The student seems to be quite strong in the math portion of the physics work. She did all of the computations herself, and her answers all matched mine. She only needed a little bit of direction with how to approach the problems, and this will grow more natural with practice. Overall, she's doing great.

Physiology Tutoring review by Bijin in Portland, OR
Today's session was spent working on waves and simple harmonic motion. We started with the properties of a wave, including wavelength, frequency, period, velocity. We determined period as a function of mass and length for pendulums. We did a few practice concept problems. We then moved on to understanding the Doppler effect equation. Finally we worked on some of the concepts associated with simple harmonic motion, specifically the relationship between position, velocity, and acceleration.
