Though originally from South Texas, I recently relocated to Austin to pursue a Ph.D. in English. My areas of specialization are Medieval and Renaissance British literature. Prior to this, I received a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Texas State University-San Marcos and, while pursuing my M.F.A., lived in San Antonio. As I continue my graduate studies and teach colege-level courses, I am excited to share my love of the written word with students who want to grow as writers and readers. While the majority of my tutoring and teaching experience has taken place within a college writing center or classroom setting, I would be well-suited to work with college-bound high school students preparing for AP English exams and college application essays. I also have extensive experience working with students who have developmental and remedial educational needs and, additionally, have experience tutoring students for whom English is a second language. Where literature is concerned, aside from being well-versed in early British literature, I also have abiding interests in African-American literature, Mexican-American literature, Native-American literature, and poetry in particular across time. My undergraduate and master's degrees required me to read far and wide within the American and British literary traditions, however, and I have had great success working with students who struggle with literary analysis.I believe that everyone is capable of critical thought and creative expression regardless of her or his educational background or learning level. Everyone has a voice that deserves to be heard and a story that deserves to be told. As a tutor, my primary goal is to uncover and foster these things in my students because I believe that you cannot use the voice that’s uniquely yours until you first believe that you have one. And while I will put on my teacher hat when the occasion calls for it, I am first and foremost a tireless cheerleader and a relentless believer in my students. I strive to empower my students by cultivating their self-confidence and encouraging them to take intellectual and creative risks, all of which are qualities that extend far beyond the confines of an English class.Because I am a writer—specifically, a poet—many of my interests and hobbies revolve around language and literature. I am an avid reader of everything from Greco-Roman mythology to Contemporary American Poetry to Tolkein’s The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. Other interests include foreign languages in general and the Spanish language in particular, the American Southwest, classical music and music in general (I sing and play the clarinet, oboe, recorder, and ocarina), the visual arts, Star Wars and Star Trek, and the Middle Ages. I love being outdoors and am an avid hiker and backpacker. I also love to travel and have wandered across the United States, Mexico, Peru, India, and England. I hope to return to India one day and dream of going to Thailand and Tibet. My work schedule keeps me fairly busy and my cats Linus and Fergus keep me perpetually on my toes, but in my spare time, I enjoy practicing yoga, discovering the next best place to eat that nobody has ever heard of, combing through the shelves at Halfprice Books, and exploring the city of Austin.

I learned Spanish while living as an exchange student in Ecuador the year before I went to college (1989-1990). I became fluent during that time. I worked as an Assistant Teacher to the Spanish Department while studying at Davidson College and enjoyed getting to know the students & expanding their understanding of the Spanish language & the Latin American culture. I had the privilege of studying in Spain during my Junior year, which deepened my appreciation for the roots of the language. I worked as a Spanish/English interpreter for the Orange County courts as my Summer job during those years. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to share what I learned.

I live in Madison, New Jersey, and I work in a veterinary clinic in Secaucus, New Jersey. I tutored primarily during the four years I attended Davidson College, an elite four star, four year, private liberal arts college in Davidson, North Carolina, where some of my pupils were local high school students who sought help in French and French history. My primary areas of expertise in tutoring are in French, Genetics, ACT, SAT, GRE, Spanish, German, and Dutch. I took Genetics at Columbia University, NYC, and I have lived for over four years in the countries where these languages are natively spoken.I am well versed in tutoring for the SAT and ACT because I graduated high school with a GPA of over 4.0 and was ranked in the top ten of my class in Madison High School, which in turn was ranked in the top ten high schools in the state. My SAT scores are listed at the top of the page. I speak 5 languages English, French, Spanish, German, and Dutch. French is clearly the next subject that I have comparable experience and background in. I received a 5 on the French AP exam, a 790 out of 800 on the French SAT II subject test, and in 1998 I scored first in the Mid-Atlantic region and third in the nation in the national exam conducted by the American Association of Teachers of French. I was then invited to France for an all expense paid two week vacation where I attended two World Cup games and was one the guests of the President of France at the time, M. Jacques Chirac, at a garden party in the presidential palace in Paris. I also wrote a 32-page French thesis in the last course of my French Major at Davidson College, NC. which summarized the influence of French literary views over North African novelists, especially Tahar Ben Jelloun in the post-French-colonization era in the 1920's.As for my expertise in Genetics, SAT, GRE, and Biology, I have a BS in Animal Science from the College of Biological and Environmental Science at Rutgers University, and I received a B in Genetics at Columbia University in the labs where the field of genetics was born with the study of Drosophila flies. My proficiency in tutoring in Biology is also exemplified by a 640 in the Biology SAT II Subject test. The two semesters during which I attended an American professional veterinary school in Oklahoma taught me a lot about stress in academia. My success in Spanish stems from the translating that I perform between Hispanic clients and staff members at the veterinary clinics I work at. I then completed my Spanish studies when I traveled between cities in Chile, South America working in an animal humane hospital and eventually getting accepted into the national veterinary school in Valdivia, Chile, L'Universidad Austral de Chile. I also received the German National Heritage Award combined with a partial scholarship to college, which was awarded to only one high school senior a year.

I received my BA in Theater from Davidson College and an MA in Education from Wake Forest University. Over the past several years, I have tutored a variety of students in English, math and organizational skills. One of my favorite subjects is geometry. It fosters essential skills like working with numbers and spatial tasks, which apply to just about any profession. As an educator, I pride myself on patience. Students often come to me with questions they didn't get to ask during class. I want to fill in those gaps and help people achieve their academic goals. I adore dogs, love promoting local arts and crafts, and enjoy performing Shakespeare!

I completed the undergraduate liberal arts curriculum at Davidson College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. Following graduation I completed four years of work at Children’s Hospital Boston in the Hematology and Oncology Department as a Research Technician investigating genetic disorders of iron metabolism in a mouse model system. After my time at Children’s Hospital, I enrolled in a graduate program at Boston University. After six years, I received my PhD in Molecular Biology, Cellular Biology and Biochemistry. My PhD research focused on developing a novel methodology for fluorescently detecting unmodified RNAs in living E. coli cells.Concurrently, I was engaged as a Teaching Fellow for courses in Microbiology, Physiology, Molecular Biology, Cellular Biology and Biochemistry. As a Teaching Fellow I instructed and tutored engineering students who easily absorbed Mathematics, but struggled with the life sciences. Working with these students was challenging, but success in motivating and helping them overcome learning barriers to succeed academically was my favorite part of the job and personally very gratifying. I now believe that teaching students how to push through any intellectual roadblocks and overcome learning difficulties can be more important than teaching the subject matter alone. When I am not in the classroom or lab, I spend my time playing water polo or life guarding, surfing and fishing the beaches of Nantucket.
