I understand that middle school students are well on their way to becoming independent adults, and I'm passionate about developing creative strategies to fit that unique period of development. Aside from this, I love writing and editing others' written works. In High School I was the Managing Editor of my school newspaper, and I worked at a variety of publications including the Cal Alumni Magazine and a Cuban Travel blog throughout college. Today, I edit on a freelance basis and specialize in everything from business memos to expository blog pieces. My journalism experience honed my skills in crafting concise messaging that conveys deep meaning. Outside of working with students, I love to create large works of art, listen to podcasts while walking around my city, and cook meals with friends!

I am an engineer with a graduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where I have taught math and science courses for 1.5 years. I also have several years of private tutoring experience, teaching various levels of math and science from elementary school through college. Teaching is my passion, not only because I enjoy doing it, but also since I see how it makes a real difference in my students' lives.I always attempt to explain difficult concepts in simple language, with real-world examples that my students can relate to. My tutoring sessions start with a discussion of the important terms and concepts, in which the student takes an active part. After graduating from high school I joined the United States Marine Corps. I spent 4.8 years in the corps, and was stationed overseas the entire time (Okinawa, Hungary, Kosovo). I have traveled to over 15 countries, and have developed a fascination for learning about different ethnic cultures. I enjoyed my time in the corps, and do my best to always try to incorporate my stories into my lesson plans. I am currently pursuing my TESOL certificate (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages).For over 10 years I have tutored fellow students, coworkers, high school students, college students, ESL learners, and adults. During my undergrad program I was a writing tutor for not only fellow University Of Illinois at Chicago students, but also for students at Jones College Prep. During my graduate program I also tutored at Jones, and at Whitney M. Young Magnet School. I enjoy tutoring because I like helping students make sense of difficult topics.
