I am a licensed teacher with 15 years of classroom teaching experience. I am certified to teach grades 1 - 6 and high school English, and I also have certifications in AIG (Academically and Intellectually Gifted) and ESL (English as a Second Language). I received a BS degree in Elementary Education from UWM-Milwaukee and a Masters in Educational Leadership from National Louis University in Chicago, IL. Ever since I started teaching, I have been passionate in my commitment to maximizing individual student performance, inspiring students interest and instilling a sense of self-worth among all students. I have dedicated my career to each of these pursuits, as my resume will attest. In my personal life, I have two grown sons and a very spoiled mix breed dog. I have lived in Milwaukee all of my life but got a chance to experience living and working in another area - North Carolina - for several years. It's beautiful there. I enjoy traveling to places I've never been before and meeting new people; shopping; reading; basketball and attending sporting events. When time allows, I enjoy sewing and taking long walks.

I am a graduate of Northern Illinois University. I received my Bachelor of Science in Education with a focus on Special Education. I spent 34 years teaching high school special education and tutoring math and retired 5 years ago. Since my retirement, I have gone back to sub at the school I last taught at and also do some private tutoring. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Math. In my experience helping struggling students, I have been able to find alternative ways to present the material so it can be easily understood.

I believe that education is the most important aspect of the developing youth. My goal is for all my students to become confident learners in their subject area. I achieve this by providing one-on-one attention to each student and helping each student 'learn how they learn'. This not only helps them achieve their current goals in our sessions, but also helps them in their future goals and study habits. I have been providing education to students for the past ten years. I am a certified middle school, high school, and college level Math and Science teacher. I have taught in a number of middle schools and high schools in the Chicagoland area over those past ten years. In addition to being a classroom teacher, I have also provided tutoring in Math, Science, and test prep. I am confident that my students improve in their subject area and showcase this improvement through constant record-keeping throughout and after each session. Hello! My name is Teacher Laurie! I am very excited to be a new tutor with Varsity Tutors and I look forward to meeting you! I have a Bachelors Degree in English with a minor in Psychology from Monmouth College and a Master's Degree in Teaching from National Louis University. I have taught or tutored students ages 3 through adult in a wide variety of settings and subject areas, including prep for standardized tests. I am currently an Elementary School teacher at a Title I school and have 20 years of teaching experience. I also have my Special Education Certification and work with students that have a broad range of learning challenges. Many students now struggle as well due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which has caused students to fall behind in their studies. I am a Nationally Board Certified high school English teacher with 11 years of teaching experience. I have a degree in English and Education from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and a Masters of Education from National-Louis University in Chicago. I have taught 9th grade English and Reading, 10th grade English, and just finished my 3rd year teaching AP Language and Composition. I have extensive experience preparing students for the ACT English and Reading exams, the SAT Reading and Writing/Language exams, and the AP Language and Composition exam. My students would probably describe me as scientifically sound, passionate, energetic, creative, strict and diplomatic. I hold all of my students accountable and expect them to leave my classes understanding their material down to a Cellular and Molecular level.My background is Science, Research, Education and Fashion Design. I graduated with a B.S. (2003) and M.S. (2007) in Molecular, Cellular and Microbial Biology. I completed my thesis in an Immunology lab that focused on the introduction of immunological cells, such as T-Cells, Dendritic Cells and Macrophages. I analyzed my results through many arrays of mRNA and Protein analysis; such as Real-Time PcR, Western Blots, Immunohistochemistry, and FACs Analysis. I then pursued a Ph.D at Northwestern University in 2006. During this time, I published the results of my Prostate Cancer research surrounding Developmental Biology at the Robert H. Lurie Research Center of Children's Memorial Hospital. After leaving the Ph.D. Program, I began teaching Biology courses at C.S.U. This led me back to school to complete a M.A.T. and Secondary Teaching Certificate at National-Louis University. I then taught for Chicago Public Schools from Middle School to Senior Level, alongside of teaching Biology courses for City Colleges of Chicago. After the major turn-around that occurred for CPS in 2013, I decided to expand upon my Fashion Engineering skills and enroll in a Fashion Design Program. I recently completed my B.F.A. in Fashion Design this past March (2016). Molly has been a science, math, and special education teacher for over 6 years and is passionate about helping students reach their full potential. She started teaching through Teach For America (TFA) as a Learning Behavior Specialist and Corps Member. Molly has also served as the Head of Anatomy Curriculum for Perspectives Charter Schools, responsible for developing an NGSS-aligned curriculum and implementing it network-wide, as well as the Specialized Services Lead for Perspectives Charter Schools High School of Technology, responsible for monitoring specialized services and implementing best practices in classrooms school-wide. As a TFA Corps Member, Molly served as an exemplar for the Sponsor-a-Teacher fundraising initiative. Molly holds an MAT from National Louis University that she received as part of Teach For America, and a BS in Nutrition Science from University of California - Davis. Each student is considered a unique individual with something unique to offer the classroom, and not just as a piece of data from a test.I set high expectations for behavior and classroom management from the first day of school onward. My management techniques focus almost exclusively on positive reinforcement, providing students with the responsibility and opportunity to make decisions that will set them up for success. I believe that all students strive to do well; if a student is acting out, I look for an underlying cause. I speak personally to students to understand and prevent future negative behavior. I am a graduate of National Louis University. I received a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and have a minor in Biological Sciences. Since graduation, I have been teaching Middle School Math, Pre-Algebra and Algebra at a school in Waukegan. I have a passion for teaching, nothing I enjoy more is seeing the look on a child's face when they finally understand a new concept. My philosophy is that as an educator I must do everything, I can for each of my students to reach their highest potential. The word "can't" is not in my vocabulary. I now have students that have graduated high school and are attending college come visit me and tell me, "Thank you for believing in me."
