I received a Bachelors Degree from Knox College and a Masters from UMKC, both in economics. I currently teach college level economics while I'm working on finishing my PhD. In addition to economics I tutor math and writing. When not reading, writing, and teaching I like to sing, play music (accordion and guitar), and play ultimate frisbee.

I believe that each student has the potential to succeed. By teaching the fundamentals and constantly encouraging progress and effort, any student can learn any topic.
I am a dedicated STEM educator with over 20 years of experience teaching high school science, including advanced placement courses. I hold a B.A. in Chemistry from Knox College and have two masters' degrees in science education and Teacher Leadership. Throughout my career, I have been passionate about making STEM accessible and engaging for all, believing that every student deserves a strong foundation in science to unlock future opportunities. Past students have told me that I have the ability to take complex scientific concepts and break them down into manageable, understandable parts, I strive to make students feel supported and inspired. One of the most rewarding parts of my work is witnessing the pride and excitement students experience when they conquer challenging topics. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy traveling, exploring the night sky through my interest in astronomy, and taking long walks with my dogs.
I have a passion for learning and I love to spread that joy to others. I did a double major in mathematics and music at Knox College and extensively studied many core aspects of mathematics that most students never get a chance to touch. I believe that a true understanding of mathematics comes from a deeper understanding of these principles. It's more rewarding to know why mathematical principles work the way they do and be able to apply them more broadly than to simply know rote computations. That being said, the student should always be in control of their goals. It's my job to provide feedback, help them reach their goals and gain confidence in their abilities.
Hi! My name is Archita and I am part of the Varsity Tutors program in the Chicagoland area. I am an Elementary Education major, and I just graduated from Knox College this summer. From a young age, I have always enjoyed helping people. After coming to college, I decided that one of the best ways to help people would be through getting a major that would teach me the necessary skills so that I can be an adequate support for people. The same love of helping others is what brought me to Varsity Tutors.Through my major, I learned how to talk to students, how to teach, how to manage time, as well as how to be part of a major support system for each child. As a tutor for this program, I hope to utilize all of the above for each student that I help so that they do not feel as though school is hard and help them be motivated and encouraged.
My teaching philosophy is, first and foremost, getting the student interested in the subject, and then moving on to the particular area in which they are struggling. Everything is interesting! Each student requires specifically tailored ways in which to engage their interest. As a writing and philosophy tutor in college, I would quickly assess the most compelling piece of information, and then continue to work on what they are struggling with. Writing is often puzzling, and I have solved many puzzles!I am a recent graduate of Knox College, with a major in Philosophy and a minor in Creative Writing. I was one course away from graduating with a double major in English Literature, but I chose to focus on my Philosophy Studies. I earned an award for my Philosophical writing through the Illinois Philosophical Association in 2016.
Hi, I'm James. I am a math and data science graduate, and I have spent more than a year tutoring statistics and introductory math courses. I also have experience working with younger students as a camp counselor, working with kids from 7 to 16 to help them develop into driven, self-sufficient young people. My passion for tutoring comes from a desire to help students build confidence in their skills and develop a genuine understanding of concepts, especially in math. My approach is all about meeting students where they are. I like to start by figuring out what they already know and understand, then use that as a foundation to strengthen areas where they feel less confident. I like to use simple examples similar to the problems they find challenging and work them through them step by step before giving them an opportunity to try on their own. I am a tutor who is patient, approachable, and dedicated to your success. If this is what you are looking for, I'd love to help.
I have a PhD in organic chemistry. Therefore, I prefer to tutor organic chemistry, but I can help with general chemistry as well. I have plenty of experience teaching both organic I and II chemistry throughout my graduate school career and I was a tutor all four years during my undergraduate studies. I am very good at helping with mechanisms and analyzing NMR spectroscopy.
I am an expert in SPSS software, including Statistics, Modeler and Amos. I worked at SPSS (later IBM) for 25 years as a technical support specialist, curriculum developer and a trainer. In my role as a trainer, I taught statistical analysis/research topics ranging from descriptive and inferential statistics to more advanced methods such as predictive modeling, machine learning, segmentation, structural equation modeling, and text analytics. I have also personally used SPSS software in my own research for over 40 years. For my Ph.D. dissertation, I used SPSS to analyze public opinion polls to identify the key drivers of why Americans voted the way they did in Presidential elections. I also used SPSS software to analyze election data for a number of papers I presented at conferences, including the Social Science Research History Association and American Historical Association conferences. In addition to being well versed in SPSS software and statistical analysis, am also a trained historian with experience teaching United States history at the University level. I have a Ph.D. in 20th Century Political History, with emphasis on the New Deal Era and Quantitative Methods in History. While at the University of Illinois, Chicago, I taught survey courses on the history of the United States, as well as some specialized courses including The History of the 1960s and The History of the United States during the New Deal-Fair Deal Era.
I am passionate about teaching the Spanish language and culture. Learning another language expands your world while also giving you a new perspective on your own place.
Ciao! I'm Melissa, and I want to help you learn Italian. I am the author of four novels set in Italy and am fluent in the Italian language. I translated my second novel into Italian. Through my dual language Italian blog site www.StudentessaMatta.com. I help others learn the language through posts I write in Italian and Youtube videos and podcasts that I record in Italian. I offer conversational chat opportunities through my website, and twice a year, I organize and lead small-group Italian language immersion programs in Italy. I also organize Italian language homestay vacations. I began learning Italian 20 years ago and have personal knowledge and insight regarding the best learning practices and how you can create an Italian immersion program right at home. I work with very beginning students who are just starting to learn the language and advanced students who wish to practice and improve their conversation skills. I believe language learning is fun, and there is nothing better than speaking Italian when you travel to Italy. Ready to get started? Andiamo!
