I have taught high school English, mostly in private schools, for 15 years. In that time, I have taught ninth through twelfth graders, journalism, AP and IB English courses, advised the student newspaper, coordinated and moderated the yearly debates for the student UNIS-UN committee, and sat on the admissions committee.I helped design Freshman curricula to encourage students to get used to high school expectations and sophomore curricula aimed at preparing students for IB study should they choose to pursue that path.Those years included creative writing of poetry and short fiction as well as study of the personal essay modelled on writings of authors such as Loren Eisley, Joan Didion, James Baldwin, and Alice Walker. There is more to writing than crafting a persuasive critical paper about a work of fiction.It was also the responsibility of the English Department to review college essays for students before their formal submission. When I was not teaching English I was a law clerk with Lawyers for Human Right in South Africa during apartheid, the appellate division of the UnitedStates Attorneys office in D.C., and private practice with Jones Day Reavis and Pogue.But my first love is writing and teaching literature.

I'm back to tutoring and editing after spending a few years in sales and management. Before I took time off to be at home with my son, I taught at Oakland Community College as an adjunct English instructor, and wrote and edited for Gale Cengage, an educational publisher.I started tutoring at Oakland University in the Rhetoric Department the year I graduated.

I graduated from University College with an honors degree in Architecture, and then in Mathematics Education, and Design of Educational Materials with distinction from Kings College, both in London. I've been teaching for close on thirty years in London and in Massachusetts. In England I taught in a comprehensive secondary school and in the Pupil Referral Service, so I have had experience of an inner city, culturally diverse population with wide ability. I became a Graduated Assessor then examiner for Midland Board, Oxford Board, and Southern Board Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 (GCSE) bi-annual examinations. For the past fourteen years I have continued to teach in MA at middle school in the public and private sector and followed Masters programs at Boston College in Evaluation and Assessment, and at UMass Boston in Instructional Design which led to a period mentoring teachers at a charter school in Worcester. In recent years I have been an adjunct professor of Developmental Mathematics at both Bunker Hill, and Roxbury Community Colleges, working with an adult population.Throughout my career, I have encouraged students within my classroom and in one-on-one tutoring, and have an excellent record for maximizing achievement. I spent several years at Guildhall University mentoring at the Middle School Master Class, and entered students in National Math Challenges achieving wins on two occasions and runners-up twice. I have been a part of Math Focus which aims to encourage creative and critical thinking in the solution of problems of mathematics, and entered students in Math Counts on numerous occasions. I have successfully prepared students for SAT, ISEE, and SSAT, and enjoy the rapport I seem able to generate with those I teach.I have travelled widely and experienced much. It enriches my world and feeds my enthusiasm for the subject. I encourage my students to seize control of mathematics and approach it logically. For many, it is an untried perspective which brings revelation and a genuine understanding of process.

As a graduate student I had limited opportunities to pursue tutoring. As such, I have joined Varsity Tutoring and am SO excited for the chance to get back into teaching students AND learning from them.I am a scientist so, I love tutoring students in biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, microbiology and many other topics. I also enjoy history.When I am not in school, you can find me cooking, reading or playing with the dog my boyfriend and I share. I then received a Doctor of Osteopathy degree from the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed my residency in New York City. Although I primarily tutor math and science subjects, I have a broad range of interests including sports, music, art, literature, history, movies, and even television shows. In addition to extensive personal travel in both the United States and abroad, I was an exchange student at Sheffield University in England during college. All of these experiences have provided me with many opportunities to learn about and form friendships with people from many different backgrounds and cultures. I pursued my M.D. at the University of Iowa, specializing in the field of obstetrics and gynecology. I'm currently a practicing resident physician in Phoenix, AZ.I'm sure it's uncommon to find a full-time physician, wanting to tutor on the side, but my passion in tutoring and mentoring is deeply rooted in my experiences during my academic pursuit. As a student who struggled through middle school and high school, I was lucky to have encountered great tutors and mentors who aided and provided me the tools to become successful in academia and my personal life. I became motivated to become that same role model and educator for others. I began tutoring during undergrad, emphasizing in engineering and advanced calculus courses. As I worked as an engineer, I continued to privately tutor college students, and taught MCAT and college prep courses. I began teaching biological and medical science courses as I progressed through my medical school education, honoring in numerous classes. I performed well on my medical board exams, and thus was invited to tutor board prep exam for graduate medical students. Throughout my journey in tutoring, I have mentored students of varied academic backgrounds and achievement levels, I worked to build organization, time management, and study skills, for my student-athletes while working to maintain high academic and personal standards and motivation.Even to this day, as a practicing physician, my passion towards teaching and tutoring is fueled by interactions with 3rd and 4th year medical students rotating through their clinicals, however I miss the opportunity to teach students with varied academic backgrounds.My goals in tutoring is to provide both hands-on and hands-off approach, providing the students problem-solving skills that would be applicable to both academia and their personal life.
