ACT English Tutor • +22 Subjects

I graduated from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign in 2010 with a BA in French Language and Literature and a minor in Russian language and literature. About a year after I graduated, I was accepted to a program, run by the French government, to teach English in France. I spent a year in the eastern town of Belfort helping French students ages 15 - 20 with their English grammar and pronunciation. While there, I took advantage of the school holidays and traveled to several different European countries. After my contract finished, I spent two months traveling through Spain. My favorite subjects to tutor are literature based, as that is where my interests lie. I enjoy discussing books with my students and helping them realize the subtle nuances of the author's language. I also enjoy helping my students with their own writing, helping them find their unique style. For test prep, I enjoy the English, Reading and Writing portions and try to help my students do the same. I believe the more a student enjoys something the easier it will be for he or she to progress.

I'm a recent graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, where I graduated Magna Cum Laude in both Biochemistry and Chinese. I enjoyed being involved on campus- I'm a member of Phi Gamma Nu business fraternity and Kappa Delta social sorority. I volunteer with two local outreach programs for teens and am a member of my school's International Relations Council.I am an experienced tutor who loves to teach and help others. I have over 400 hours of tutoring experience in a variety of high school subjects, particularly in the hard sciences and math up to calculus. At the same time, I have experience tutoring lower level subjects, such as middle school math, in my breaks at home. I have also worked as an English as a Second Language Tutor for a graduate native Mandarin speaker. I think it's the diversity of my tutoring experiences that makes me such a patient, dedicated tutor- no matter who it is, I can develop a personalized teaching style for them.As a tutor, I believe that it's my job not only to teach students how to do the current problem, but to develop a thorough understanding of the concepts behind the problems. I use an extremely interactive tutoring style to make sure that at the end of the session, students will feel comfortable applying what we learned to problems of all types, and confident in the knowledge they have gained.

I earned my Bachelor of Science in Biology degree at Loyola University Chicago and graduated with laudatory honors in 2015. My goal is to earn a Master of Medical Science in Physician Assistant degree in order to become a Physician Assistant. I will be matriculating to a P.A. program in May 2017. I am passionate about helping others and it is fulfilling to see my efforts have a positive effect on another person, whether it be in a medical or educational setting. My favorite part about being a tutor is helping students gain confidence and become excited about subjects they have struggled with in the past. I enjoy tutoring Mathematics and Science because there is typically more than one approach to understanding concepts. In Mathematics, there are multiple methods to solving problems and relating their applications to the real world. With Science, there are many ways to explain processes, including through the use of analogies and metaphors. However, standardized exam preparation is my favorite subject to tutor because it requires the development of strategies as well as knowledge. It allows students to improve critical thinking skills that will not only be useful for exams, but in their future academic, professional, and personal ventures. As a tutor, my aim is to provide students with the assistance they need in the present and the motivation to continue to succeed in the future.

Teaching philosophy and its related subjects is my passion. Philosophy is full of useful wisdom, but can be rather confusing at times. The best way to cut through this confusion is by having a 1-on-1 session with a tutor that understands where your confusion is stemming from and knows how to resolve it. That being said, sometimes philosophy is also about coming to conclusions for yourself. So, while I do clarify topics and teach students more about them, I do not tell students exactly what to think. Because of this, my teaching style is less like a lecture, and more like an open discourse. I teach general philosophy, the philosophy of religion, ethical philosophy and sociology.I currently hold a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy with a Psychology Minor, and I am working towards a PhD. After earning a PhD, my ultimate goal is to teach philosophy at a university. This has been my goal ever since I took my first philosophy course at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I realized that philosophy is one of the only subjects that can be applied to everyday life, no matter how old or young a student is and regardless of their profession. Thats why I am passionate about teaching philosophy - it's practical.During my time as an undergraduate, I joined the philosophy club and tutored many fellow students. I led class discussions on a variety of philosophical topics, and even participated in some public speaking events. Overall, I believe that my studies at university, along with my teaching experiences, have provided me with a great foundation for tutoring. I'm happy to help anyone who wishes to know more about the subjects that I offer.

I am a graduate from University of Illinois at Chicago. I recently received my Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience with a minor in Chemistry. Throughout my undergraduate years, I have extensively taken an active role in a broad range of research projects including public health and biochemistry. Given my background, I am passionate about science and public health. In my experience helping students struggling with science courses, I have learned that a lot of times constructing the basics about a given topic makes it easier to learn complex topics. Everyone has a different learning technique, and I am here to help.

Hi! My name is Mercy and I am currently a first-year student at MIT studying computer science and neuroscience. As of right now, I am pre-med and hope to become a pediatric dermatologist.I love working with kids and have a wide breadth of tutoring, teaching, and mentoring experience. For example, all throughout high school, I served as a volunteer at church, at my local library, and at Swedish Covenant Hospital in the Pediatric Unit. This allowed me to see a lot of different perspectives and it afforded me the opportunity to work with kids in different areas.Beyond this, I was a peer tutor in high school through the National Honor Society for English, Spanish, Calculus, Trig, and many more subjects. I also worked at Mathnasium for a year and a half where I taught subjects ranging from arithmetic to pre-calculus and worked with kids ages 5-17.Currently, I am the social activities chair and a mentor for an organization called MIT CodeIt. This program seeks to close the gender gap in technology by teaching programming fundamentals to girls and non-binary students in the Greater Boston Area. Through CodeIt, I have been able to continue growing my teaching skills and my passion for youth STEM access.Outside of teaching, I enjoy sewing, reading, and am on the MIT Cheerleading team (go tech!)I can't wait to work with you!

I am a life long learner with extensive experience tutoring students in a variety of subjects: Math, foreign languages, humanities, etc. I have a Masters from Tulane University and I'm currently prepping to return to school to pursue an MBA. The ability to connect authentically is at the heart of my core skillset: I've lived in 4 continents and picked up several languages along the way. These highly social and outgoing experiences inform my global worldview and deep understanding of what sparks interest in the eyes of my students.Resilience, confidence and intellectual curiosity can take one to amazing places. In fact, these traits have given me the ability to develop engaging tutoring sessions that incorporate information from various disciplines to help students reach their full potential in the classroom and the workplace. My approach to teaching is not to just to impart information, but to share information in such a way that will empower students to ask questions. This approach will strengthen their ability to think critically and solve challenging problems. Seeing the joy in students eyes when they finally grasp a concept is the ultimate reward. When I'm not working I love playing tennis, traveling and exploring cool neighborhoods in the city.
