Hello, my name is Monika and I am an ecologist from Florida. I graduated with a Master's Degree in Earth and Environmental Resources Management and have my Bachelor's of Science in Zoology with a concentration in Environmental Biology. My forte is science, but I'm great with writing, reading, and math.As a quick background, I began tutoring during my undergrad as a math tutor for freshmen and sophomore students. I was then a teacher's assistant in graduate school for various environmental science courses for two years and absolutely loved the challenges and rewards of the job.

Fourteen years of teaching in various countries has taught me that learning is a reciprocal process with teachers and students both contributing necessary and invaluable input. I left a financial career to pursue one in education because I sought a more communicative, interactive, and rewarding way to positively impact society. Using my own student experience as a guide, a primary goal of mine is to share my passion for learning and knowledge to help others reach their potential.My career change from finance to education, language, and literature is precisely what distinguishes my background and broadens my knowledge base with which to tutor. My undergraduate major in Accounting provided a technical base largely focused on logic, problem-solving, and factual concepts. Complementing this quantitative foundation with a graduate liberal arts degree in English also relied on logic, but qualitatively enhanced my ability to synthesize and express information with more insight and clarity.Therefore, my two academic areas converge into a holistic view of education which I consider integral to my language teaching ability. Language supports other subjects in any number of ways: visually by words or image, aurally, or kinesthetically in our efforts to comprehend or communicate information. In teaching English language acquisition, reading, writing, and test preparation, I saw that these subjects overlap and correlate rather than exist as isolated categories possessing separate skill-sets. My teaching experience in Asia, North and South America has been enhanced by an exposure to different perspectives on teaching, learning, and socio-cultural dynamics. Encountering learning styles and customs from China, Mexico, the Middle East, and the U.S. encouraged both my communication and teaching styles to become flexible, student-centered, and responsive.Traveling widely during my time abroad also deepened my belief that active, personalized, hands-on examples or experiential learning provide the most beneficial aspects of education. Most subjects overlap within the knowledge acquisition process so a critical thinking approach to any subject will enhance overall learning capacity. I believe that my broad and varied academic, professional, and personal history enables the creative, innovative, and multifaceted approach to learning that our contemporary environment demands for students to succeed in their preparation for the future.

Writing is my passion. I love guiding middles school throughh college students in one-on-one tutoring, helping them develop their own voice on the page. It's exciting to assist others as they discover new things about themselves through writing, opening creative vistas to their future potential. Writing is the basis for all education: it develops critical thinking skills, encourages "big picture" thinking, and preps students for life in "the real world." Every student has something to offer through their inherent abilities to tell stories. My job is to help a student to be their best self, using writing as that conduit to better self-understanding and self-awareness. I have strong experience working with ADHD students--as I have it myself so I "get it." Also worked with students on autism spectrums.

I am passionate about the advancement of music, and about helping people advance their musical goals, whether that means guiding a new student to be a self-sufficient performer, or elevating a lifelong musician to reach their personal ideal level of skill. I have served many students with complicated individual life challenges, such as communication and sensory-processing disorders, and I take pride in being able to offer a tailored approach to the needs of every student.

I came to the US from China in my early 20s to pursue further education. I work full time and have been living in St. Louis in the state of Missouri since 2014. Before that, I'd lived in Illinois, New Jersey, and New York for years due to school and work. Although my current last name is German due to my marriage, I never forget where I'm from originally and what my heritage means to me. My native language is Mandarin Chinese and I have a strong passion in helping people improve their Chinese language skills. I always believe being able to speak and understand another language opens another door for a person. When I was in graduate school, I worked part-time as a tutor for a US professor who studied Chinese during his spare time. I was delighted to see him improve his Chinese skills! I also tutored several elementary school students in the past. I'd like to help more people improve their Chinese language skills.

I have an MA in Counseling Psychology from Loyola University Chicago, a BA from Southern Illinois University in Psychology. I am a LPC and counseled and taught children and adults in a variety of environments, including for NASA as a part of their Behavioral Health and Performance Team Currently, I also teach English as a Second Language online to a variety of private and corporate clients, spanning the ages of two to to adult. Some students are learning basic English while others are studying advanced composition or are seeking to pass exams such as the IELTS. On a personal note, living in south Texas, I saw a huge need for free community English classes, and thus began the formation of the adult ESL program, in my local community. Not only do I serve as administrator of that program but I also serve as the Advanced Classroom teacher. I'm passionate about how these students can advance their lives through education! I can't wait to meet your student in the classroom as well!
