I began tutoring as a volunteer assignment in high school, later being promoted to an advisory block teacher my senior year. While a student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, I continued to tutor other students, mainly in physics and mathematics. Eventually, this lead me to a position as a TA and lab technician in Phys 406: Physics of Music Lab. In total, I have tutored for about 8 years. My favorite facet of tutoring is exploring the different ways in which students learn a topic. An explanation that resonates with 90% of students, may not clarify things for the other 10%. Part of being a good tutor requires me to identify many alternate routes to explanation, should the more common ones not work well. This interests me greatly, as it broadens my own understanding of the topics in math and physics I find so interesting. An added bonus is being able to help someone meet their classroom goals.I recently earned a B. S. in Physics with Distinction in the Curriculum from U of I at Urbana-Champaign with a Minor in Mathematics. I also took enough math courses out of my own interest that I was a mere 12 hours away from completing a double degree in Mathematics. Students preparing for AP examinations may want to know I received a 4 in AP Physics B, a 5 in AP Calculus BC (5 in the AB subscore), and a 5 in AP Chemistry.

My experience with tutoring stems back to my high schools days, where I would work in the language lab to help my peers increase their proficiency with Spanish and French. After graduating from high school with my IB diploma, I attended New York University, where I majored in Politics and Spanish. I then attended Loyola Marymount University where I received my master's degree in Urban Education. I have worked in education for the past 6 years, beginning as a 2012 Teach For America corps member in Los Angeles. I have taught nearly every subject in middle school classrooms, and I have taught both biology and algebra to high schoolers. My favorite subjects to tutor are mathematics and Spanish, as I find them to be the most engaging, but I enjoy and can help with nearly all content areas. When I was in school, I was (and still am!) a self-described "nerd" who really enjoyed expanding my knowledge base and taking on academic challenges. I hope to impart the idea that tackling new concepts can be fun and rewarding at the same time. Additionally, as a generally "good test taker," I enjoy helping students hone their test taking skills to achieve optimal results. When I am not tutoring, I enjoy running, listening to music, a game of tennis, or a good TV-binge session.

Professional Certifications Tutor • +1 Subjects

Greetings to you. I am glad that you are taking the time to read this. I would like to share with you my "Why." Why am a I Varsity Tutor? I really enjoy teaching, sharing with students, celebrating their successes, and getting excited when that light bulb goes off indicating understanding and applicability of the subject matter. I remember how it was for me as a student to have someone who cared and enjoyed what they did. I have years of experience teaching. I have been teaching Six Sigma since 2008, and have taught in various industries, mainly at the collegiate level. I continue to teach for SIU Carbondale teaching both online and in class, and love what I do. I also teach industry, and various companies as the need arises. I have taught students from all over, including Turkey, India, and of course the U.S. You may wonder about my education, and that is fair. I have a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology from SIU Carbondale, a Master of Science in Quality Systems Management from National Graduate School, a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from McKendree University, and All but Dissertation (ABD) for a Doctorates in Quality Systems Management. It was while getting my Master's in Quality Systems Management that I was introduced to Six Sigma and was hooked ever since. I have become very passionate about the Quality field, and have continued perusing quality, sharing it, and teaching it. As a result, I obtained my American Society for Quality (ASQ) certifications. I have a Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB), a Certified Manager of Quality/OrganizationalExcellence (CMQ/OE), and Certified Quality Improvement Associate (CQIA) certifications. Six Sigma is a major part of quality, and that is my subject in Varsity Tutors. If I were asked about my teaching philosophy, I would say that I do my best to ensure that the student is made to feel that their concerns are addressed and that they not only learn about the material but can apply what they learned. I want the students to know that I understand that I too was a student once, and I applaud their efforts to learn and will do all I can to assist in that learning. I have varying interests outside of academia as well, however, I will save that for the hobbies section. I look forward to meeting you.

I am a graduate of Grand Valley State University and I obtained my degree in Allied Health Sciences. Currently, I am attending Old Dominion University to complete my master's degree in biology with an emphasis in microbiology/immunology. I have much experience in the education field beginning with my time as a preschool teacher for 1 year. Additionally, upon my undergraduate graduation, I worked as a full-time substitute teacher for grades K-8. I have experience teaching all subjects in K-8 classrooms. I am most passionate about tutoring science, especially biology, as this is the field I have spent most of my time in. I believe all students have the potential to succeed if they are putting in their best effort and maintaining a positive attitude throughout the process. Therefore, I always encourage my students to never say negative remarks regarding their learning to avoid dejection feelings of insecurity. I would consider myself a life-long learner as I am always on a quest to discover new information and I hope to instill a love of learning onto others.

Growing up with both parents as teachers at the secondary and higher education levels, I have had a passion for academia from a very young age. I was most certainly the student who loved attending class, and I brought this passion with me throughout all of my collegiate and legal career. While concurrently in law school, I became involved in higher education at the University of Illinois at Urbana - Champaign where for two years I instructed my own classrooms of university students in courses on written and oral communication at a variety of skill levels. In addition to law and oral and written communications, I am passionate about foreign languages and traveling to new and exotic places. A polyglot, I speak English, French, German and Turkish and am educated from the Universite de Bourgogne in French language and culture. I continue to expand my own foreign language education and am preparing for my DALF exam, the highest level of French proficiency certification available to non-native speakers.I look forward to sharing my passions in the law, oral and written communication, and languages with my students to help them discovery their own potentials.
