I grew up in Chicago's Rogers Park and, later, Morton Grove, IL where I attended Niles West High School. After graduating, I enrolled in the Chemical Engineering program at the Illinois Institute of Technology. While an undergraduate, I was a peer tutor in General Chemistry. My favorite subjects in college always involved using computational models of chemical processes; pursuit of this niche sub-discipline afforded me an opportunity of a semester at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Upon obtaining my Bachelor of Science Degree, I continued my education to obtain a Master's degree in Chemistry. Subsequently, employed by various companies in the industry, I worked in the fields of Semiconductors, Natural Gas and Energy, and provided technical consultancy to instrument companies and universities. Perhaps as a tribute to experience with tutoring as an undergraduate, and lecturing Chemistry as a graduate student, I had been especially adept at taking a complex scientific or mathematical concept and breaking it down to the level of comprehension by a lay person or a professional of varying discipline -- a precursor to my present occupation. After transitioning from the industry to education, I was fortunate to discover passion and fulfillment in helping students achieve their personal goals, be it basic education, performance in math and science, standardized testing, high school equivalency attainment or self-improvement through further education and more lucrative career options. In addition to being a tutor, I volunteer at the Howard Area Community center as an Adult Basic Education Tutor and at Horizons for Youth, working with at-risk urban youth.

My writing has been published across many platforms, including online blogs and physical magazines. My background in teaching has been brief but extraordinarily rewarding. I have taught remotely at Norris, Marrs, and McMillan Middle Schools in Omaha, Nebraska, where I devised lesson plans and instructed classrooms for after school programs in art and entrepreneurship. My biggest accomplishment does not lie with the lessons themselves, but with connecting with each student on a personal level. I believe that in writing, communicating your own unique voice through word is of the upmost importance, and it is my goal as a tutor to help that voice shine. bell hooks once wrote in 'Teaching to Transgress,' "As a classroom community, our capacity to generate excitement is deeply affected by our interest in one another, in hearing one another's voices, in recognizing one another's presence." The tutor and student relationship should always be a positive, interactive, and creative experience that continues to grow with the student's academic ambitions. In my eyes, the word "student" can easily be replaced with "thinker" or "individual," because everyone is unique when it comes to their perspective and thought-process about the world around them.In my view, the best part about my approach to tutoring is that "we" get to decide what personal practices will create the greatest learning experience for you. Of course, the final product of any assignment that you are given needs to be exactly as your school teacher wants it. But the roads, the turns, and the pace that we take to complete that finished product is entirely up to you! If your assignment was to create a painting, I will bring the paint and the brushes - but you will paint the masterpiece with your own ideas.I promise to do my very best to help you get the job done and learn some new critical thinking skills along the way. I am enjoyable to work with, and I promise that you will feel proud about the work that we do after every session!Sincerely,James

I firmly believe that with the proper direction, anyone can learn once they accept the fact that true knowledge can only be achieved by struggling and persevering through the challenges that are presented. I am a compassionate lifelong learner with years of experience in the areas of training and personnel development, who understands the significance of connecting life experiences to the acceptance of new information. I have a bachelor's degree in finance from DePaul University and over 14 years of management experience. Thus, my ability to identify problem area and help students to relate the subject matter to something that they already have an awareness of, is the skill that makes me a great tutor. I'm currently in the midst of a career change working toward a master's degree in secondary education, in the area of mathematics, so that I can actively join the fight to help educate today's youth. I have a passion for teaching math in a way that can be understood in laymen terms so that the beauty of the subject and its relevance to all facets of life can be appreciated. I have worked with high risk elementary students who were performing well below grade level and helped them to meet and/or exceed the required standards by year's end. My teaching philosophy utilizes the backward design method where we begin with the ideal result then we review all of the prerequisite knowledge, skills, and techniques that will be need to solve the problem. With this method the teacher serves as a facilitator who guides the student through the process of using the critical thinking necessary for understanding the desired result. Thus the focus if for the student to gain knowledge of what they are doing and why, not just the answer to a question. In addition to my love for teaching I have an affinity for athletics and a passion for photography, therefore I truly appreciate the hard work and dedication that is required to fulfill a challenging goal as well as the beauty of capturing the moment of triumph. So if you need a tutor who can properly identify a problem area, communicate it in a manner that you can understand, relate it to something that you can identify with, then direct you through the process of obtaining the knowledge and skills necessary for comprehending the solution, I'm your man.
