College English Tutor • +13 Subjects

I recently retired from the Los Angeles Unified School District after a 30 year career in which I worked as a teacher, counselor and school principal. (I am a youthful 55 years old.) I have a Bachelors degree in English from the University of California at Berkeley, a Masters degree in Professional Writing from the University of Southern California, as well as California credentials in teaching, school counseling and school administration. My interest in tutoring is to help students reach their goals as expediently as possible while making the tutoring sessions an enjoyable experience for the student. I attempt to establish a positive rapport with the student as quickly as possible in which the student feels understood, accepted and liked. If the student is comfortable with the tutor, the focus can be entirely on the subject matter. I use humor whenever possible. My interests outside of tutoring include daily exercise and writing. I am currently taking a course in playwriting.

I'm more than willing to help someone past this first stepping stone to success and to help the community reach the 'next level' together. My patience and my ability to make a subject understandable at many different levels of thinking is a very important tutoring trait that I have. I can work with someone and figure out what the best way for them to understand the topic.

I graduated from MIT in 2014 with a degree in chemical engineering. Over the past three years, I have worked as an engineer for Chevron in the Gulf of Mexico and for Phillips 66 at the Borger Refinery. I have been extremely blessed in my college and professional career, but I believe that a significant amount of my fortune stems from my passion and dedication in the classroom. I look forward to tutoring students in math and science related subjects so that similar opportunities will be open to them in the future. In my spare time, I enjoying relaxing with my wife, Landry, and our basset hound, Gunner.

Theatre is so much more, than plays or musicals, and I believe experiencing it as an art form is essential for children to thrive. I believe in teaching the whole child, and that includes; social skills, building confidence, collaboration, thinking outside of the box, creativity, and imagination. These are all things theatre has been proven to do. Children ages 4-18 are ready to learn, create, grow and imagine if only given the chance. I aim to create a space for them to do just that. There are many reasons I value theatre, one is the proven statistics that arts and theatre education raises test scores, creates higher capacity for cognitive thinking, and improves mood and focus. But more importantly, theatre education gives children confidence and freedom. It lets imaginations run wild long after its time to "grow up".I wish to teach because I want to inspire as many children as I can to play, imagine, and create. I hope to teach children how to dream big and shoot for the stars. I long for children to grow up with a sense of wonder and self-worth. I desire that all children know how beautiful and special they are for their own unique talents. I need children to know they are so much more than a number on a page. These values are important to me because children are important to me.Children deserve the opportunity to be themselves without judgement or fear. My priority will always be my students. My job is to create a great experience for them, and my evaluations will be based on how each project goes. I would offer the opportunity for families and students to fill out a survey or evaluation at the end of each project and semester so that I can learn what is working for my students individually. This will also help in my reflection process as I decide if I should or should not reuse these lessons. I would also invoke an open door policy to model the environment of inclusion, and positive collaboration. In addition to modeling what I expect, my students can expect a reliable, trustworthy teacher who genuinely loves what they do. They can expect a detailed, well-planned year with high expectations for success. I believe that every student can be successful. Everyone can learn, and grow with the right combination of light, water, and soil. However, if we are constantly asking fish to climb trees- we will never allow them to show us how capable they are of swimming. This is where student centered instruction and project based learning becomes extremely important. By differentiating based on your students' needs and allowing them the opportunity to show you how they learn best, they will excel. Build respect and rapport, listen to your students, let them tell you what they need. Children are so much more capable than we give them credit for. I am not of the mind that my students should go off and do whatever they wish. But I sure am of the mind that when my student wants to rap her final instead of give a presentation, because that's how she feels she can best succeed, that she should go ahead and soar!My passion for this work lies so deep within me, I do not know where it begins or ends. I work hard, and I go after what I want with determination and confidence. I hope that in leading by example I can instill these as traits and expectations in my classroom. These traits will serve my students long after leaving the safety of my four walls. I believe that this work is very important. I will never get tired of seeing a child's eyes filled with excitement after a performance. Watching a student's confidence grow, seeing pride fill their entire body after working hard on a new challenge. These little moments are what educating is all about, because they are the biggest most important moments of all. If I can help one student who needs theatre, then I will have done my job.

Growing up, I was always curious about how things worked- from cars & planes to structures and computers. I therefore decided to pursue (and graduated with) a degree in Engineering at UCONN in Connecticut. I currently tutor middle school math, algebra, k-12 english, writing, and essay editing. Even as an engineer, my favorite subject to tutor is writing because I get to help people communicate and find their voice. Understanding how to relay a message to a targeted audience is a an amazing skill to have in any job or industry.I have a passion for teaching students to be their own goal-setters and problem-solvers, that have a drive to tackle anything that life throws their way. We can achieve anything we set our minds to when we are dedicated and put in the effort! One of the things I am currently learning how to do is to play the piano, and I can tell you first hand that practice and determination does make a difference! Outside of tutoring, I also love to dance, ski, and watch airplanes! Hope we can connect sometime soon. :)

I am a second-year finance student at Ohio State University, and I would love to tutor you! I have a 4.0 GPA, and am very industrious and organized, and enjoy helping others. In high school, I tutored students in geometry and this past year at college, I tutored others in college Algebra. In addition to math (ranging from pre-algebra to pre-calculus), I can tutor students in Spanish and ACT English.I understand that students learn in different ways and at different speeds, and can easily adapt to their different needs. First, I generally like to review and explain the specific topic the students is having trouble with. Second, after the student seems to have grasped the content, I usually create sample problems and make the student answer them and walk me through the explanations. I understand that not all students will know exactly what they need help with either, so in those cases, I do an all-comprehensive review and gauge the student's understanding as I progress.Aside from tutoring, I enjoy spending time with my friends, as well as reading or painting! I also enjoy walking my dog, and volunteering with animals!

I graduated from The University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and finished a Masters in Biology at Eastern Michigan University. I enjoy helping others, which included teaching kids at my church, tutoring middle and high school students during study hall, working with youth in after school programs, helping adults who wish to improve their English, and helping friends who home school their kids. My most preferred subjects are Biology and Economics because I like knowing how things work and how people think on a larger scale. While it is important to know facts or the application of facts, I feel that learning how to learn and critical thinking are important and are built on the foundation of a trusting relationship existing between the tutor and the student. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, following professional sports, boardgames, cooking and eating.
