I have worked about 5 years doing private tutoring. I also have worked about 5 years at a Math Learning Center called Mathnasium, and learned a lot about the math education process in all of this time. Most of the time, math class struggles are due to gaps in learning from previous year's math classes. Math really builds on itself from year to year.My philosophy is to help with any homework that is due, and then spend any remaining time covering concepts from previous years that may need some strengthening. For example...simpliyfing fractions will be difficult if you don't know your multiplication/division facts...so I would work on those topics if simplifying is difficult.For the younger kids, playing a game or two to break up the hour is always a great idea. Using visuals is great for any student of any age, particularly younger ones, so I will always draw/write things out, and encourage students to show all of their work. I will try to make math as fun as it can be!!

Whether teaching a lower-level or upper-level Spanish course, my approach to teaching Spanish has three main foci: engagement, relevance, and culture. In order for students to learn, they need to be engaged with the materials. I employ a multitude of materials that students can use to enhance their learning that goes beyond only reading from a textbook. By using videos, audio, and short stories to learn from, students are able to see the language used in a variety of contexts which keeps them interested in learning. While providing students with additional materials, I also make sure to learn about their interests so that I can teach them "me-specific" vocabulary. It is important that students not only have knowledge of common vocabulary but also vocabulary that they are likely to use when engaging with Spanish speakers. I believe that including vocabulary that is relevant to the students further increases their engagement and in turn their proficiency in the language. Finally, culture is a huge component of any language and I believe it should be seamlessly included alongside grammar instruction. By including culture into language instruction, students gain insight into idiomatic expressions, customs, and other culture-specific topics that will enrich their language learning experience.Whether in the classroom or online, I believe technology plays a vital role in improving teaching and learning. For additional practice outside of the classroom, I enjoy using web-based applications that allow students to interact with one another via video or voice-chats. This allows students to continue practicing what they have learned and to receive feedback. I have always been a huge fan of helping others and computer science, so I thought that I might as well combine the two! Since I was a little girl, history has been in my blood, although being a historian was never my plan (I wanted to be an actress). Growing up I was fascinated with Abraham Lincoln and the untimely passing of such a prominent public figure. I loved every trip to the Chicago Historical Society (known today as the Chicago History Museum) as a child. I enjoyed reading about the Puritans and the Native American culture.At this point I'm comfortable classifying myself as a historian although it took me awhile to get to this point in my life. In 1999, I received my B.A. in History from Loyola University Chicago and in 2002, I received my M.A. in Public History from the same school. I then went on to earn my Ph.D. in American History from Northern Illinois University in 2011.I teach college history online full time and I have taught numerous survey and upper-division American history classes at local "traditional" colleges and universities. When I teach, I don't necessarily focus on the facts of history, but on the larger transitions. I want students to understand how history has changed over time. I also try to convey to students that history can be fun to learn.In my personal life, I am the mother of two small children and I have been married for fifteen years. I received my Bachelor of science in Biology from Roosevelt University. I received my Master of Science in Biology and Doctorate in Adult and Higher Education from Northern Illinois University. Teaching Biology is my passion. I currently teach Biology at Fayetteville Technical Community College in North Carolina. During my 7 years here, I have taught Anatomy & Physiology, microbiology, biochemistry, organismal biology and general biology. My approach as a tutor is: 1. To identify and tackle the topics where students need the most understanding. 2. To help build students skill set and confidence by teaching study strategies for success in their discipline. 3. To engage the student in practice to prepare for assessment. My goal is to enhance student learning and performance, resulting in higher grades. I believe in the power of education to transform lives and families for generations. I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of a student's journey toward achieving their goals.

For the past seven years, I have had the opportunity to tutor students in a variety of subjects. From elementary school to college, each age group brings about its own joys and rewards. I pride myself on truly taking the time to assess the strength of my clients and to search for areas that may need improvement. As an occupational therapy student, I have been trained in how to break down seemingly daunting subjects into simpler terms, and this has yielded success in my previous clients. By making each subject relatable and implementing a variety of instructional methods, I hope to foster a deeper understanding of course content in my students and provide them with general study tips which can be applied to all subjects and assignments.
