Hello, my name is Sam and I am an accounting major at Loyola University Chicago. I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri before moving to Chicago. I decided to move here because of the vast career opportunities in accounting. I became a tutor because I have always enjoyed helping my fellow classmates with their homework. My personal goal in tutoring is to not only aid students in learning material, but also teach them how to learn material on their own.

My name is Shima Wang. I come from China, and has been United States for 8 years. My favorites are music, movies, traveling, and foods. I would love to communicate with others about my interests. Learning a foreign language would be boring, but trying to get started from what you are interested might be a good method. I really hope you could have fun while learning Chinese.

I earned my Bachelor of Science in Biology degree at Loyola University Chicago and graduated with laudatory honors in 2015. My goal is to earn a Master of Medical Science in Physician Assistant degree in order to become a Physician Assistant. I will be matriculating to a P.A. program in May 2017. I am passionate about helping others and it is fulfilling to see my efforts have a positive effect on another person, whether it be in a medical or educational setting. My favorite part about being a tutor is helping students gain confidence and become excited about subjects they have struggled with in the past. I enjoy tutoring Mathematics and Science because there is typically more than one approach to understanding concepts. In Mathematics, there are multiple methods to solving problems and relating their applications to the real world. With Science, there are many ways to explain processes, including through the use of analogies and metaphors. However, standardized exam preparation is my favorite subject to tutor because it requires the development of strategies as well as knowledge. It allows students to improve critical thinking skills that will not only be useful for exams, but in their future academic, professional, and personal ventures. As a tutor, my aim is to provide students with the assistance they need in the present and the motivation to continue to succeed in the future.

I am a recent graduate of Loyola University of Chicago, with both a Biology and Bioinformatics BS(2021) and a Bioinformatics MS(2022). I am also starting my PhD at the University of Chicago this fall! My focus at Loyola mainly revolved around the microbiome and computational biology; completing my thesis work studying Celiac disease and the microbiome in the Burns lab. I have experience teaching biology at the college level, at Loyola I was responsible for teaching general biology I and II. I am experienced teaching a wide variety of biological subject matter, however I also have expertise in the realm of computational biology and bioinformatics. I am well versed in R, python and java and how to apply these coding languages to obtain meaningful results from large datasets. It is my goal to make science not only fun and interesting, but also accessible. I will adapt my teaching style to meet the individual needs of each student, and provide interesting and relevant real world examples of biological concepts to illustrate how biology can affect one's everyday life. I spend much of my spare time at the beach with my 6 year old chihuahua Suzy, at the gym or watching movies with friends.

I design study plans aimed at addressing problem areas. When I was a student in middle school and high school, study strategies that teachers recommended to the class rarely worked for me. After having little success with their methods, I eventually found one that worked for me and in a short time, the results were showing in my grades. I feel that each student must approach academics in a unique way that caters to his or her learning style as well as one that is appropriate for the subject. Once the preferred study style has been identified, it makes for a much more efficient process, and creates an environment in which the student will excel. With my firsthand experience of using different learning strategies to master topics, I want to find the learning style that works best for you and help you achieve your academic goals.

I am pursing my Masters in Medical Sciences, from graduating with my bachelors in biology from Loyola University Chicago last year. I will be continuing my education by getting my masters and eventually medical school, but in the meantime I would like to make use of how I have dedicated my life to education and helping to pass on my knowledge to others. I have been speaking Spanish for 10 years now as my fourth language and I am tutoring in Spanish (all levels, A1-C2) and linguistics. To have effective learning, it is imperative to have a good foundation of structure, lesson plans, and engaging learning activities to have the student become comfortable with real-life communication and comprehension. I use curative, teaching certified lesson plans, including all the parts of the language: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. My students and I will alternate between these four skills, becoming more comfortable with each of them overtime and integrating them all. In addition, I find much joy and take a lot of pride in my efforts to have become educated and educate those around me. I love to take the time to help people feel seen, appreciated, and to provide any support that I can to ensure my students are able to move forward on their own, especially since I have struggled with a learning disability myself and have only ever wished for someone to be patient with me and my learning. I have experience teaching students with disabilities, different learning preferences, faster and slower learning paces, and all over the USA! You will find I am flexible with my schedule also and can personalize lessons plans accordingly. I also like to do periodical check-ups and assessments to see the progress the student and I are making and seeing how we can only grow more! I have lived in three Spanish speaking countries such as Spain, Belize, and Chile. I have also spent a lot of time, a few + months, in Madrid, Barcelona, and Santiago de Chile with close friends, much like family, and I have visited Argentina, Uruguay, Mexico, and Mallorca (a Spanish Gran Canarias Island). I also live in Chicago where the culture is very Mexican influenced so I have experience with the Mexican dialect and cultural customs. My mother also lives in Florida so I've had exposure to the Cuban, Dominican, and Puerto Rican dialects and cultures as well. This has allowed me to expand my cultural awareness and become comfortable with different dialects, customs, and even jargon and slang! This list will only continue to grow hopefully!

I find a passion in tutoring that goes beyond teaching a concept. My goal in teaching a student is to instill a passion within the student and to generate an interest to learn. I believe mentoring a student in this manner is just as crucial as teaching the concept itself. This strategy has been very effective in my teaching experiences, and I am certain that it will be effective with anyone who wants to do better in a subject area.My background in Biology began in 2004 and stretches through my time at Loyola University Chicago. I took Biology at an Honors and Advanced Placement level in high school and majored in it in college. But my level of expertise does not stop there--I have tutored students in virtually every subject from Kindergarten through 8th grade, and I have served as a mentor to many high school and undergraduate students on Chicago's north side. Along the way, I have learned from my students just as much as they have learned from me.Simply stated, Science is a difficult subject. It combines Reading Comprehension with Mathematics and forms an entirely new language. With my extensive background in Biology and Chemistry, I can help ensure a step-by-step explanation of the subject and the complex details that are essential to its understanding. Since science involves a great deal of Mathematics and Reading Comprehension background, I am also able to mentor in those subject areas to guarantee the student future success in the field.I find it important to prepare students not only for success in the subject in which they are learning, but for an overall triumph in their academia.

I have recently graduated from Loyola University Chicago with a BS in Psychology and a BA in Latin! I was also part of their Undergraduate Honors Program and hope to become a clinical psychologist. I love tutoring because knowledge is priceless and must be shared. As a tutor, I believe it's my job to not only help students understand what they're working on, but to build enough of a knowledge base that they can confidently and independently solve similar problems in the future. I am currently an adult ESL tutor at the Loyola Literacy Center. I have a lot of experience working with children as well. I volunteered at the summer camps at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens from 2015-2017 and more recently I worked at a crisis shelter in Cincinnati. I tutor a broad range of subjects, but I especially enjoy English, Literature, and History because I think self-expression and interpersonal understanding are valuable skills that stretch far beyond academia. I also really enjoy math! When I'm not tutoring or studying for classes, I love playing soccer, reading, writing, translating, and exploring.
