I have always enjoyed mathematics. I know well that this is not the case for everyone, even for most people. I like helping students overcome the difficulties and frustrations that they encounter. Having been a math teacher myself, I actually have some disagreements with the way that math is typically taught. I think the fact that so many students get turned off of math should be an indication that maybe something needs to change in the way that we teach it.In addition to math, I like reading, listening to music, and am also a big Cub fan. I even worked for the Cubs from 1988 through 1991, where I was an usher and later a crowd management officer. For a couple of games, I was even stationed on the field as the "loose ball retriever." Today I continue to listen to Cub games, at least some innings of as many as 150 games or so. I'm a big fan of Pat Hughes, their "play-by-play" announcer. I actually prefer to listen to him then watch the games on TV.For my education, I attended Deerfield High School in the 1980's. I then attended Loyola University Chicago, where I attained a BS in Mathematics and Computer Science, an MS in Computer Science, and a Secondary (high school) teaching certificate. While at Loyola, I did a lot of tutoring for their tutoring center. Mostly as a result of this, some years later I became an adjunct professor there, and also at Northeastern Illinois University.I did my student teaching at Loyola Academy in Wilmette. Following that, I was hired by Loyola, where I taught math and computer programming for five years. While there, I also helped out with the ministry program, driving students to ministry activities and going on an immersion trip with students to Appalachia.An illness caused me to leave Loyola Academy, but awhile later, it was then that I was hired by Loyola University and Northeastern Illinois. I taught 2 classes per semester. I did this for about 2 years, and taught mostly intermediate and college algebra.Following my college teaching, another full-time position became available at another high school - Carmel Catholic in Mundelein. As with Loyola Academy, I taught math and computer programming for Carmel. I was really one of the first long-term computer programming teachers there, and taught both Introductory Programming and AP Programming.At some point, the classroom format began to change. There was a substantial increase in different kinds of technology incorporated into everyday teaching. Our department chairman utilized the concept of the "flipped classroom," where he would prepare Youtube videos of himself demonstrating lessons. Students would go home and watch his videos, then return to school the next day to do homework problems based on the video demonstrations. I wasn't comfortable teaching this way, and I felt that it was time to get out of the way and let the newer teachers, who were more comfortable with this, take over.I still enjoy helping students who struggle with math. I have been a math tutor, really since my high school days, but especially now since having left my full-time position. After many years, I think that I I am pretty knowledgeable about the kinds of difficulties students often encounter. For example, I am well aware of the struggles that geometry students (and others) typically encounter with mathematical proofs.I especially like tutoring, because I enjoy the 1-1 relationship with a student. I like helping people and encouraging them, motivating them to believe in themselves and develop their abilities. I enjoy working with them as they overcome their obstacles. Doing this makes me feel that I have something of real value to contribute, and that I am of genuine help to other people.

I am a senior at Loyola University Chicago studying chemistry with a math minor. I have worked as a tutor at a K-8 school for the past three years. At this school, I am also the Science Olympiad coach where I teach a range of different science events. After having little success with their methods, I eventually found one that worked for me and in a short time, the results were showing in my grades. I feel that each student must approach academics in a unique way that caters to his or her learning style as well as one that is appropriate for the subject. Once the preferred study style has been identified, it makes for a much more efficient process, and creates an environment in which the student will excel. With my firsthand experience of using different learning strategies to master topics, I want to find the learning style that works best for you and help you achieve your academic goals.

Test Prep Philosophy:Doing well on standardized tests often comes down to a matter of preparation. But standardized tests generally seek to test students' problem solving abilities rather than their aptitude for memorization or a particular subject. So how can you prepare for a test made up of unknown content? The answer is to study the way the that test is written, administered, and scored.Put succinctly, the Graduate Records Examinations (GRE) is challenging because the test tries to make you uncomfortable. The testing environments are tense. Computer testing is not familiar to everyone. The scoring is intentionally complicated, and, if you do well, it gets even harder as you go. Beyond this, tests often try to cloud their questions with unfamiliar words and poorly phrased presuppositions. In particular, the GRE verbal exam relies on questions that are meant to draw test takers into doubting themselves, when the majority of questions are simply asking for a pair of synonyms or antonyms.Students have an advantage when preparing for the test, in that the questions will come in the same format as the study materials and the concepts being tested can only come from a limited range of options. This means that targeted practice and light studying can prepare a student to test well even in a subject in which they typically perform poorly.The scoring methodology of the GRE also makes preparation a focus. That is because, students will be offered more difficult (thus worth more points) questions to students who perform well in the initial sections. In this way, getting just 10% more questions correct in a typical 20 question sub-section can increase your score by much more than 10%.Latin Teaching Philosophy:Too often, teachers and tutors will delve into their subject matter with cookie-cutter lesson plans, easy-to-grade assessments, and rote memorization techniques. These methods are rooted in antiquated learning models and will only cater to a meagre portion of any classroom. Learning is a reflexive process; this is especially true of my area of expertise, Latin. The improvement of a student's current understanding should be the central thrust of any lesson plan rather than a schedule of lessons handed down from someone who hasn't shared a room with a student in decades. I maintain this focus by questioning not just my students for answers but the thought processes that led them to those answers.When I say that learning Latin is a reflexive process, I mean that the instructors understanding of how well a student in understanding the concepts is as important as the student's efforts. Imagine, if you will, learning Latin as a ladder. If you are at the bottom of the ladder, the first step must be the first rung of the ladder and advance one by one not skipping or glossing over any of the 'rungs.' It is the instructor's job to track a student's progression and and to move on or linger accordingly.The Benefits of Learning Latin:The Latin language with its lax syntactical restrictions, highly nuanced vocabulary qwerks, and deeply referential style is one of the most expressive and flexible languages in world history. Its writers can weave words together to create a rich and meaningful statement with seemingly endless layers of subtext. What is more, as a millennia-dead language, only the most cherished and acclaimed works have survived, having been marked for saving generation after generation as defining achievements in literature and oratory.Learning Latin as an English speaker offers many benefits even aside from reading and writing the language itself. Many high school students have a difficult time breaking down very complex sentences, such as reading selections you would find on college essay exams and in higher level college or high school AP classes. Studying Latin helps with English comprehension, especially in complex texts, because to translate Latin into English with any amount of success, a near-complete understanding of English grammar is needed. Latin does not have a native punctuation and includes very loose rules considering word order. Thus, in order to translate Latin into English, you must be able to figure out the punctuation and word order on your own. To my experience, I have never spoken about the nuances of English grammar in more depth than in a Latin classroom in the midst of a translation.Apart from grammar, learning Latin has a particular benefit that other languages do not possess. Latin is a root language of English, which means that as you expand your Latin vocabulary, your English vocabulary expands as well. This is a two-way street, of course, because many Latin words are similar to common English words.While improved grammar and vocabulary may be very tangible benefits, the most prolific benefit is also the most difficult to quantify: a drastic paradigm shift in critical thinking. There is currently much evidence of the benefits of learning a language at a young age with many claims as to the impact on a student's future success. To speak from my experience, learning a new language challenges you to understand an entirely foreign tongue in the same way that a native speaker understands it, which trains you to think differently and exposes you to a much wider view of language and problem solving.Background:My favorite subject to tutor is Latin. I have studied the Latin language since high school and I never tire of it. I love to see the wave of understanding wash across a student's face when they have mastered one of Latin's more difficult nuances. Latin classrooms often contain multiple levels of students. In fact, for 4 of my 6 years as a student, there were no less than three classes of Latin being conducted at once in the same classroom. This is an unideal way to teach Latin, but it meant that I spent much of my time as a junior and senior in college helping younger classmates.As a staffer for an international Model United Nations conference, I have had many opportunities to teach students about topics from parliamentary procedure and formal discourse to global politics, concepts in macroeconomics, and governance. I believe in a constructivist approach to learning, and will act as a guide for the student to learn, explore and wonder. Lecturing does not engage the student in learning, and will hinder their progress, so I make it a point to provide discussion-based instruction, where the student has an active role in his/her own learning. I have an eclectic taste in music, enjoy reading and swimming, and will never say no to a friendly board game or a game of touch football.

Hi there! My name is Emily and I just graduated from Western Governors University with my Postbaccalaureate in Elementary Education and have my teaching license in Elementary Education from Utah and Illinois. I also have a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology at Loyola University Chicago and took some Education Policy courses there as well. In between my degrees I worked as a self contained special education teaching assistant in a middle school and assisted students from 6th-8th grade. Before going back to receive my teaching license and as part of my program, I student taught math, ELA, and social studies in a 6th grade classroom during the beginning of 2021 as part of my degree. While I tutor and assist a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about Math and passing the knowledge that I've gained through my educational experience down to my students. I love to balance work and fun throughout my time with my students by folding math games into my sessions. I strongly believe that education effects and is effected by many factors of life and work to help address these factors in order to provide students with quality education. In my spare time, I enjoy doing yoga, working out, spending time with my friends, and enjoying a good movie/watching TV.
