As a passionate and experienced special educator, I am eager to help future teachers prepare for their content exams or basic skills exams and begin the next chapter of their lives!!

My passion for helping students stems from a desire to see others succeed, particularly in overcoming the challenges of complex subjects like physics and mathematics. Throughout my academic journey and professional career, I have seen firsthand how education can transform lives and empower individuals to reach their full potential. I have extensive experience working with students in various capacities, starting with my time as a Life Skills Trainer, where I supported individuals in achieving greater independence through the development of practical skills. This role sharpened my ability to communicate effectively and adapt to the unique needs of each learner. As a Research Assistant in Physics, I guided peers in understanding experimental techniques and data analysis, while also presenting research findings at conferences, which deepened my engagement with academic mentoring. I earned dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Physics Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, with a specialization in Energy, from Western Illinois University and Southern Illinois University. This background has equipped me with a solid foundation in STEM subjects, allowing me to tutor students in physics, mathematics, and mechanical engineering. Of these, physics and math is my favorite subjects to tutor because it offers a fascinating combination of theory and real-world application, encouraging critical thinking and problem-solving. My teaching philosophy is centered around fostering a collaborative learning environment where students feel encouraged to ask questions and actively engage with the material. I believe in breaking down complex concepts into manageable parts, guiding students to develop a deeper understanding rather than just memorizing facts. My tutoring style is patient, supportive, and adaptable, ensuring that each student can learn at their own pace and according to their individual needs. Outside of academia, I enjoy working on hands-on projects, particularly those that involve engineering solutions. I also participate in environmental initiatives, such as planting trees on campus, and contribute to community events, which keep me grounded and connected to others. These interests complement my academic pursuits, reinforcing my commitment to helping students not only in the classroom but in broader life skills and community engagement.
My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that every student has the potential to succeed when given encouragement, structure, and meaningful instruction. With sixteen years of experience teaching social studies, I have learned that education is most powerful when students see how it connects to their own lives. Social studies is not simply about memorizing dates, names, and events; it is about applying them to daily living to become a good citizen and lifelong learner.
I am a retired Iowa teacher, who has decided after only one semester removed, I miss teaching! I have had the privilege of being in a classroom for the last 33 years. Twenty-four of these years were with 7th and 8th grade English/Language Arts. The last seven years of my teaching was as a Reading and Math interventionist with K-5 students. I enjoyed this immensely as I provided students the tools to gain reading and math skills. I have had multiple trainings and certifications throughout my years in education with my more recent being in Reading Recovery, Jolly Phonics, Really Great Reading, Lexia, The Write Tools, and Bridges, (math intervention). Just after retirement I was fortunate to gain a position as a college English tutor. Basic writing, Composition I and Composition II were my main areas of tutoring. I loved working with post high school students and would have stayed at this position but I have recently relocated to Florida. I gained my BS in Elementary Education with a Reading Endorsement from Iowa State University and my MS from Western Illinois University in Special Education. I also have over 45 post graduate credits from various universities. I thought I was ready to retire and sit on the beach, but I still feel the need to connect with students and believe tutoring will give me the opportunity to do just that!
I believe that the key to learning is in the conversation! Working one-on-one with students gives us both the chance to see what methods will work and what your goals are. I like to brainstorm with my students, working toward a final result together. I have a bachelor's degree in English from Loyola University Chicago, a master's degree in literature from Western Illinois University, and I'm currently getting my PhD in literature at University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. I love to read and write, and I have been teaching college composition courses since 2014. I have been helping students of all types with their writing and literacy skills since 2012. Outside of teaching, I enjoy playing video games, crafting, baking, and hanging out with my family. I hope to be able to help students achieve their academic goals!
I am a Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) with an Associate of Science in Veterinary Technology from Penn Foster College. In 2001, I graduated with my Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Creative Writing from Western Illinois University. My most recent clinical experience was as an outpatient, ICU and ER technician at an incredibly busy 24-hour small animal hospital. I also have experience working in general practice (small animal) medicine. Currently, I'm training to become a Telehealth specialist, transitioning into the virtual/remote side of veterinary medicine. My background and education has allowed me to not only gain knowledge within veterinary medicine, but also has given me the chance to experience different work cultures and personalities. My goal is that every student I work with is able to learn new things while having fun in the process! My style of teaching is focused yet casual, and learning sessions are a judgement-free zone...as the old saying goes, there really is no such thing as a bad question! My teaching philosophy is that it's not necessary to master all skills at once; instead, let's take a step-by-step approach and ease into the more challenging content. I know that when I was working full-time in-hospital while in the veterinary technician program, I often felt overwhelmed by the material (especially when studying for the VTNE!) Believe me when I say I can 100% relate to having test anxiety! I would like to work on strategies with students that are struggling with that aspect as well. I enjoy the feeling when I can see in a student's expression that the skill or material has "clicked" for them. I have worked with students and new technician graduates in the clinical setting, and I strive to make a lasting, positive impression on each student I encounter. As each student is different, I look forward to getting to know you and figuring out a strategy together that works best for your studying needs! Additionally, my educational background in English and Creative Writing qualifies me to tutor in these areas, alongside my primary subject of veterinary technology.

Hello! My name is Jessica and I am thrilled to receive the opportunity to share my love of reading instruction with you. When I taught Kindergarten, I found my passion for reading instruction. I found great joy in using my creativity to create fun, long-lasting learning experiences. My students enjoyed my multi-sensory approach to reading instruction. As a Reading Interventionist, my greatest strength is turning a difficult task into a rewarding, self-fulfilling experience.
From over 10 years experience of teaching, tutoring, mentoring and sharing knowledge. I have realized the secret of comprehension and excellent study, its not just about explaining a concept but understanding your student(s), learners individual learning capacity and presenting a customized learning experience of any concept. This way it becomes easier and faster to not just learn, or comprehend but also master what is being taught. I have tutored hundreds and this has made many exceptional students where others have given up on them.
As a passionate educator with a Master's in Education & Interdisciplinary Studies from Western Illinois University, I have over 25 years of experience teaching a diverse range of subjects, including ACCUPLACER ESL, Psychology, and History. My teaching philosophy centers on fostering meaningful connections with students to create a supportive learning environment where they feel empowered to succeed. I believe that education is a lifelong journey, and I strive to instill this passion in my students through engaging and relevant lessons. Outside the classroom, I enjoy practicing yoga and exploring different cultures, which enriches my approach to teaching and helps me connect with learners from various backgrounds. My goal is to inspire curiosity and confidence in every student, guiding them toward their academic aspirations.
My tutoring career started while I was still attending Western Illinois University in pursuit of my bachelor's degree in physics. I would tutor in the physics tutoring center in the main sciences building. Students would come in without appointments, and we would accept any and all students who needed help. I was there for two years, my junior and senior year before I left after receiving my degree. During my school years, I would also assist in the physics and chemistry demonstration shows that we put on every year. Students from the local middle school and high school would attend, and fellow students and I would perform a variety of educational demonstrations. As you might guess, the subjects I feel most confident in tutoring would be physics and math. However, I don't believe that to be the limit of my scope. I've always had an interest in the other sciences, things like biology and chemistry, and I've had ten years of piano lessons so basic music theory and education are within my range as well. When I'm not tutoring, I like to play video games online with my friends, a few songs on the piano, and even meet up to play the occasional table top game like Dungeons and Dragons. I study chess rigorously, and hope to one day be a chess tutor as well. Picking the right tutor is important, but can be a tad tricky. A tutor is best served as both an educational guide and a friend. Because of the one on one nature, it's important that the tutor is someone you can look up to and trust as well as feel connected with. To me, a tutor's job is not to make the student jump through more and more hoops in the interest of perfection. Rather, they are there to foster curiosity, a willingness to learn from mistakes, and improve a student's level of confidence in a subject matter. A true master is an eternal student.
I like to learn new things and I also enjoy watching people learn new things as well. I enjoy running and cycling. I also like to play piano and cook too. I have experience using Mathematica and completed three courses in university that used Mathematica.
