Go Orange! (Yes, my college mascot is a literal fruit) I am a proud alum of Syracuse University Class of 2016 where I studied information technology, computer science and animation. Because I had both logical and linguistic studies as part of my program, I was able to tutor mathematics in college, which also prepared me for my future in Japan. For 3 and 1/2 years, I lived in Osaka, Japan teaching ESL (English as a Second Language) to K-12 students. Today, I am a special education teacher for high school students. If you are here on Varsity Tutors, then you already have the will to succeed. I will do all I can to help you achieve your academic goals. As your tutor, I will primarily be writing on the Varsity Tutors whiteboard with my pen tablet so feel free to bring whatever materials you have available. Let me help you where you are!

I am a graduate of Sewanee: The University of the South, where I received a Bachelor of Arts in Russian and Art History with a focus in modern and contemporary art. I spent a semester studying at the European University at St. Petersburg in the Master's program of Russian Culture and the Arts, combining my love of both art and Russian culture. As a tutor at my University's writing center, I edited papers for a variety of subjects and worked with art majors to develop honors theses. I love brainstorming creative approaches to papers with students, and I may be one of the few recent graduates who still thinks grammar is exciting. My enthusiasm is contagious! I am a North Carolina native and an avid college basketball fan. I enjoy backpacking and hiking--I recently completed the Camino de Santiago, hiking five weeks from France to Spain.

I believe that any student can achieve their academic goals with the right help. As a past tutor with an After School Program, I know what it takes to motivate and encourage students of any age. I am a very patient and kind teacher, but I also enjoy a few quips to keep things light throughout the learning process. I think a sense of humor is sometimes necessary in order to get through complicated lessons! I connect well with kids, teens, and adults, and would love to be of help no matter your goals.

I am a native Spanish speaker with 4+ years of tutoring experience. Since my freshman year of college, I tutored peers from all grade levels who struggled with the acquisition of Spanish as a second language and help them become proficient in their communication in a foreign language. I held various positions within Bryn Mawr College's tutoring program that allowed me to envision the tutoring experience from various points of view. As the Departmental Liaison Chair, I provided more resources for tutors, fostered a positive relationship with the professors whose subjects we tutored, met their needs, and shared input from professors with the Academic Support and Learning Specialist. As Head Tutor for languages, I hired tutors, coordinated their schedules, and mediated conflicts. As a bilingual tutor, I am very patient and empathetic when teaching a new language. I have a growth mindset. Instead of saying to myself I'm not good at something, I ask myself what am I missing. If something is hard, I tell myself it will take time and effort. These principles help me improve as a tutor and guide students to take success into their own hands. I use all the resources I have available and do everything I can to find new ones to develop effective tutoring and study strategies.I scored high on this SAT Spanish Subject Test and have great understanding of the College Board's multiple-choice question. I earned a high score (5) on the AP Spanish Literature exam. My critical thinking skills and mastery of the Spanish language helped me structure my responses on the essay portion of the exam. I also understand the College Board's multiple-choice question.

In June 2010, I graduated from the Gallatin School of Individualized Study and NYU where I studied Jazz Guitar Performance and Creative Writing. Shortly after graduating, I began working as an ophthalmic technician at a private ophthalmology practice in Brooklyn and decided I wanted to pursue medicine.I completed a post-baccalaureate program at CUNY Hunter College from Fall 2011 to Spring 2013. During this time, I completed two levels of courses in biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry and physics as well as one semester of calculus. I became involved in Hunter's Physical Sciences Center, where I went on to tutor students in chemistry, organic chemistry and physics. I also took on several private students in organic chemistry. In the Fall of 2014, I matriculated at Stony Brook University School of Medicine in Long Island, where I will soon begin my second year. When tutoring, I focus on laying down a strong foundation of understanding before delving into the nuances of different subjects. Students too often fall into a cycle of keeping up with material as a series of pieces of information, never understanding the core concepts and attempting to memorize individual facts. With science and math, it is important to dedicate a lot of time when beginning a subject to clearly understand these core concepts. I have found that successfully approaching these subjects in a bottom-up way can mean the difference between continuously struggling frustratingly through courses like organic chemistry and learning to love them.Completing my first year of medical school has given me a new appreciation for the role that science plays outside of the classroom. I am passionate about these subjects and enjoy passing that passion onto students.
