Recent La Plata Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Scot in La Plata, MD
Today time was spent finding out what the student's strengths and weaknesses are, followed by going over homework assigned for the night. The current lesson involved an intro to the Cartesian coordinate system using direct variation expressions to identify points on the graph, which she easily understood. Some effort was given to carefully explain how to determine the equation of a line given a point and the slope, using the point slope formula as well as given two points. Recognizing a given set of points and translating it into a direct variation expression was also explained, as this was also covered in her class. Separating class time and environmental distractions from personal study time was emphasized as a strategy to create a study space at home, or within the library, that can allow for an experience of a more regular and calm environment to reliably facilitate the exercise of her thoughts involving math study.

Tutoring review by Tessa in La Plata, MD
Today we started with a quick review for the student's math test on Friday. In class, the review covered function rules, which I asked him to explain to me as though I had missed class and needed his help to pass a pop-quiz. He was able to explain most of the information and only needed prompting to remember a few more details. Then we reviewed for his English test on Friday, on poetry. He has a little trouble with the "impossible" terms used in poetry, so we spent (and will be spending) a good amount of time discussing simile and metaphor. We read a Robert Frost poem, and he did very well with the imagery and the metaphor. We worked with infinitives and gerunds, as they were only slightly troublesome when we were discussing verbs in an earlier session. He did very well with the infinitives and gerunds. Lastly, we did some editing practice, which took some slowing-down, but yielded great results. I will continue to work with him on using all of the time he has to take tests and review his work. He has been very attentive during our sessions and has really impressed me with his ability to not only retain but also internalize information. Today he came to me with observations from a reading we have been studying that most college-level readers would have completely missed. He has wonderful insight and I look forward to seeing his grades improve.

We continued working on circle Geometry by doing examples of problems that involved arc lengths, chords, and bisecting radii. We made sure to focus on things that the student requested review in, due to her approaching final. This most notably included Geometric proofs.
