Only a tiny fraction of those candidates who apply ultimately make it through our demanding interview process. Skilled tutors develop lessons to meet your individual needs. One-on-one tutoring sessions are held at a time and location of your choosing.

What's the cost of a private tutor in Fairfax?

The price of meeting with a private tutor in Fairfax is dependent on your or your student's specific academic needs. For example, tutoring for a student reviewing the parts of speech at a local elementary such as Keene Mill Elementary School may be a lower price than tutoring for a student working on pre-calculus at Langley High School.

You may also pay a different rate if you set up a consistent study schedule as opposed to contacting your tutor periodically for exam review.

Furthermore, the tutor you study alongside can affect the rate you pay. Many students automatically associate tutoring with a one-on-one learning environment, but most instructors also provide group tutoring options so friends and classmates can study together. Both arrangements can be powerful educational tools, so you won't go wrong with either one. Varsity Tutors also provides small group classes if you're looking for an affordable addition to your learning plan.

Likewise, tutoring can be just as beneficial for high-achievers as it is for students who are falling behind their peers. A private Fairfax tutor can present new concepts as their pupil is ready to receive them, whether that means moving more quickly or slowly than their classroom instructor. Contact one of our expert Educational Directors online or by phone to discuss more specific pricing for the services you are interested in.

What's involved in finding a private tutor in Fairfax?

If you tried to locate a qualified tutor in Fairfax by yourself, you would need to ensure that any promising candidate offered the blend of expertise and superior teaching skills that you expect from a great instructor. You would also need to figure out the logistics of each meeting, especially if you're already juggling a busy itinerary.

Why do all of that extra work when the experts at Varsity Tutors will connect you with a certified instructor in as little as 24 hours? Our network includes more than 40,000 independent tutors, so we will find a great match for any student's needs. If you need help formatting a research paper for a class at Hampden-Sydney College, we'll refer you to a tutor in Fairfax who understands the particulars of the Chicago-style citation format. If your young learner is struggling with congruence problems, we'll connect you with a tutor who can turn their math homework into a game of "Spot the Difference". Just tell us what you're looking for and let us get to work.

We will even set you up with a tutor you can study alongside without having to leave the comfort of home. Our Live Learning Platform is a virtual study space accessible on computers and mobile devices, allowing your study sessions to take place anywhere with a reliable internet connection. Our Live Learning Platform also records each session automatically, so you can go back for a refresher on foreshadowing in Shakespeare's plays or another topic at your leisure. What could be more convenient?

What types of qualifications do tutors in Fairfax have?

Nearly anybody can call themselves a Fairfax tutor, but Varsity Tutors uses a thorough screening process to filter out the majority of candidates. We begin by verifying that each instructor combines a comprehensive understanding of subject material with demonstrable teaching skills, ensuring that they have the tools every great tutor needs.

We also verify each candidate's availability so that there are no nasty surprises when you go to schedule a study session.

Next, we move on to the intangible qualities that help differentiate a good study experience from a great one. For example, we actively search for passionate instructors who can share their lifelong love of learning with their pupils. We also look for instructors who are comfortable utilizing multiple different teaching methodologies so that they can adapt to a student's unique needs. After all, a visual learner may not be able to get much out of a lecture on Einstein's Theory of Relativity, no matter how well it's delivered.

The vast majority of students can benefit from private instruction, and now is a great time to get started. If you are ready to sign your student or yourself up for private tutoring, contact Varsity Tutors right now to learn just how easy the process can be. We look forward to helping you discover how a certified tutor in Fairfax could help you reach for your full academic potential.

The Fairfax School System

Fairfax, Virginia, is a suburb that lies about 17 miles west of Washington, D.C., with a population of approximately 25,000 residents. Students attending K-12 public schools in Fairfax attend schools within the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCFS) system, which is frequently cited by national publications as one of the best school systems in the United States. FCFS has an enrollment of more than 180,000 total students, making it the state of Virginia’s largest public school system.

Though there is just one high school located within the Fairfax city limits, it and the other high schools in the FCFS have lower student-to-teacher ratios than the state average, which is reflected in each school’s exemplary Advanced Placement (AP) exam pass rate. See ratio data below.

If you are a parent who has begun to observe any adverse changes in your child’s school performance, it’s best to address the problem right away. Since the majority of school subjects rely on knowledge that builds upon previously learned skills, it can be nearly impossible for children to master new, more complex concepts without solid foundational knowledge. If your son or daughter needs help, private tutoring is an excellent solution. Struggling students and strong students alike can benefit from the expert guidance of a tutor. The communication and interaction possible during one-on-one sessions gives your child the opportunity to receive immediate feedback and assistance with the concepts your child finds most challenging.

Fairfax Test Scores

The table shown above gives you a look into Fairfax students’ scores on the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) exam. These standardized tests assess a student’s comprehension in four subjects: English, science, math, and history and social science. Students are tested in math and English each year from grades 3-12. Students in the third, fifth, and eighth grades take additional tests in science and history. Once students move on to senior high, they are given End-of-Course tests as they complete certain subjects, including geometry and biology, in addition to the yearly English and math SOL evaluations.

Whether your child needs help as he or she prepares for the SOLs or an expert to teach him or her a more advanced subject not available in school, a private tutor in Fairfax might be just the ticket. The benefits of tutoring aren’t limited to elementary and secondary schoolers, either. College students enrolled in courses at one of the many higher learning institutions in and around the Washington, D.C., area can also enjoy the perks working alongside a private tutor offers. Session Summaries by Tutors

Tutoring review by Salome in Fairfax, VA
We worked on more reading and vocabulary and lastly went over basic fraction concepts so the student knows how to deal with different kinds of problems. Did well on the reading section he tried at, but didn't do well when he wasn't trying. As long as the student puts all his efforts into the test, he should do well.

Tutoring review by Matthew in Fairfax, VA
Worked with the student to study for the AP test. We went through a practice test that she worked on by herself, and I gave her help when she needed it or made her think about the answer choices she eliminated or chose. Overall, she did well and got most of the questions right.

Tutoring review by Christopher in Fairfax, VA
Reviewed questions she worked on earlier and covered more questions from the Official Guide. Often sets up a lot of the work perfectly, but misses one crucial step that would allow her to solve the problem. Overall goals: slow down to avoid careless mistakes -- get the question right; step back and remember the basic concepts being tested (e.g., if the question asks for probability, remember that you're looking for [desired outcomes]/[total possible outcomes]); use numbers that are easy to work with to confirm answers.

Tutoring review by Amira in Fairfax, VA
The student really impressed me this time! We scored the test he took for HW, and he scored the following: English, 28; Math, 36; Reading, 34; and Science, 36. We discussed the English questions he missed, and he found most of his own errors. We spent the rest of the session working on creating specific details for the essay.

Tutoring review by Kimika in Fairfax, VA
The student and I worked on rational numbers today.  We simplified fractions, converted fractions to decimals, and converted decimals to fractions.  The student had a question when it came to dealing with the place values when converting the decimals and consistently did well after I answered it.  She completed her homework and worked additional problems in the book. We also reviewed her science vocabulary involving descriptions on physical and chemical characteristics.  She knew a few terms beforehand and we worked on her mastery of the other terms as the session went on.  I feel like she has a good understanding of the words and she should do well.
