How can a Elementary Math tutor help you?

Elementary math focuses on teaching students the basics of numbers. Topics in the subject range from measurements and counting to shapes and graph reading. Its main purpose is to introduce students to how numbers are used in everyday life. For some students, this can be a hard concept. Whether it is learning to read a clock or doing addition and subtraction calculations, struggling with math can be stressful for students. Help your child learn math by finding them a tutor who can work with them. The educational directors at Varsity Tutors can help you discover a Washington, D.C., elementary math tutor for your student.

Elementary math is important because the student will need these basics for the rest of their math schooling. If your student doesn't master the basics, it can be hard for them to move forward without experiencing roadblocks. Learning how to measure a length or use counting sequences can have future applications, and not learning it now means they'll have to do it later. A tutor can work with your student to help them learn elementary math. No two students are the same, so not every student struggles with math for the same reason. A personal elementary tutor in Washington, D.C., can work with your student to assess the areas where they have the most issues. Then, a curriculum can be built that focuses on strengthening these skills.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Rebecca in Washington DC
Student 1- We covered place value to the hundred millions (reading, writing, and specific places), multi-digit addition and subtraction. Then we took data on her addition and subtraction- it was her lowest time yet. She completed 3 addition problems with 100% accuracy in 1 min and a half. Subtraction she borrows successfully and knows what she is doing. Student 2- we worked primarily on adding parts and subtracting using a variety of sets ups (i.e. 10 is 3 and blank, blank and 3 are 8, etc.). We used visuals to do this. We practiced writing numbers in number models while doing this, as well.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Emily in Washington DC
The student and I reviewed her multiplication facts. She's improving on her 3's and getting faster on her 2's, 5's, 10's, and 11's. Then I introduced 4's, which she was able to get the hang of. We reviewed them a few times, and she was able to remember the solutions without having to count. I want to go over them again during our next session to reinforce her memory. We also worked on reading comprehension strategies.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Dana in Washington DC
Today, I brought the student a reading comprehension passage about estimating and place value in order to work on both math and reading at the same time. She read the passage aloud and did a great job reading the words. I reminded her that she can look back at the passage and even had her reread parts of it to herself. We then finished the session by playing a multiplication game, which allowed her to practice her multiplication facts. I will see her next Monday!

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Justyn in Washington DC
The student had two pages of math homework we worked on. It was an introduction to division through word problems. He felt comfortable with most of the problems as we had already reviewed division last week. He also had an extra credit assignment which allowed him to do a mix set of problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. He performed well on these problems and is retaining new information very well. I left him with a multiplication factors sheet, and asked him to review/memorize a new set each day.

Today's session with the student went well, we were able to get a practice sheet of subtraction problems finished and she read three pages out loud. Her mother brought a practice book that they had purchased during the summer to help her out and we were able to get three pages in that book completed as well.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Yiwen in Washington DC
First of all, the student and I reviewed his homework about money problems. He did well on that. Then we worked through two worksheets related to fractions together. He understood more about fractions than last week. After that, we practiced more about fractions on his common core practice book. For the other student, we solved some problems about percent of numbers and double number lines. He got a little confused on the double number lines at first. After we practiced more on that, he started to understand how to use double number lines. At last, we reviewed on converting among percents, decimals and fractions.
