How can a tutor help your child master the ISEE?

Is your child preparing to take the ISEE, also known as the Independent School Entrance Exam? This exam is split into three levels: lower, middle, and upper, and each level corresponds to the age of the student taking it. The test is used by some elite independent schools for admissions decisions. All the levels are similar in content, but the higher the level, the harder the questions become. If your child is struggling through their test prep materials, there is an option that might help them prepare. ISEE tutoring in Washington, D.C., can be a great resource for students who have a hard time focusing on their test prep. Varsity Tutors can help you connect you with a professional ISEE tutor.

The four sections on the exam consist of reading comprehension, verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and math achievement. If your child struggles with any of these sections, their personal tutor can devise a plan leading up to the test that covers the areas that they need help with the most. For reading comprehension, if your child needs to work on their critical analysis skills, identification of main themes, styles, tones, or inferences, then their tutor can work on those specific skills and topics with them. The tutor can provide practice exams that can help familiarize your student with the exam, how it's written, and how to answer the questions in an efficient manner. Washington, D.C., ISEE tutoring can help your student work on their test-taking skills.

ISEE Tutoring review by Aprajita in Washington DC
The student and I worked mostly on essays today. She wrote two essays and I helped her with planning, spelling, and punctuation. I also made up some questions for her to do to make sure she still remembered the math and quantitative reasoning concepts such as area, coordinates and number lines.

ISEE Tutoring review by Jessica in Washington DC
We reviewed some Math concepts she had trouble with last time, probability, and finding the mean. Then we worked together on the Math practice test in the book. She found some of the problems to be a little tricky so we worked them out together. Next we did a few Reading Comprehension passages in the book. She did very well and got all the answers right. Then I reviewed the vocabulary we worked on last time and introduced some new words. Finally we talked about attention grabbers in essay writing, and we worked on one together.

ISEE Tutoring review by Abbi in Washington DC
This was our first session back from break and we discussed the math questions he missed on the practice test he took the first meeting. While reviewing the solutions to the questions, I talked over some of the strategies he could use to approach other math problems on the test. Then I took him through some of the strategies for the synonyms including "word arithmetic" of using prefix/suffix/root word meanings to discover a word definition. He did a practice set in the book and we reviewed his answers. Lastly, we reviewed the strategies for the sentence completion section and he did a practice set for that as well. I generated a word list for him and will create a review for him to do to remember the words he learned. He seemed to be a bit more engaged with the material this time.

ISEE Tutoring review by Gina in Washington DC
This was another great session with the student. She is such a hard worker and it makes sessions productive. We spent the first twenty five minutes going over essay concepts and structure, and I'm pleased to see her improving. I think she'll do well on the essay section now. We spent the rest of the session working on math concepts. She understood and remembered a lot of the concepts I presented to her. She struggled with fractions and negative numbers, so I left her with YouTube videos to help her attempt to learn them before our next session. This will save time and allow us to complete math and review all concepts before she takes the test on Saturday.
