I am a Robertson Fellow for Government Service and am committed to working for the government for 3 years upon graduation from my masters program! I dream of working for the State Department in Latin American Affairs. I am excited to be a Varsity Tutor and look forward to working with students in a variety of areas including ACT prep, Spanish, English, and Government. I participated in the debate team and the newspaper in high school and continued honing my writing and public speaking skills as a political science major at the University of Florida. I am the oldest of 3, my brother is 17 and my sister is 15. I love to assist my siblings and younger cousins with homework, study tips, and applications. I am also skilled in resume building, cover letter writing, and college essay writing. After volunteering in Spain teaching conversational English to middle and high school students I took a job teaching English to international students at the University of Florida. I loved working with students. I look forward to getting to know your students and assisting them in their academics both online and in person!

L1 = English, L2 = French, L3 = Hebrew, L4 = Spanish, L5 = Arabic, Persian, and Urdu literacy skills; studying francais quebecois (as spoken in Canada).I am a semi-retired college instructor with the experience to informally assess your current level, establish learning goals, and create measurable objectives so we can work together toward achieving the desired outcomes.# ESL resources #I use these resources to help you improve your pronunciation and to expand your vocabulary: Blue Canoe, Ludwig, Membean, and the Oxford Picture Dictionary. As you further develop your language skills, you should feel more confident with business writing, informal email communication, and public speaking. I also introduce my students to resources on the US State Department's website, including the Color Vowel (TM) approach, which addresses accent and intelligibility.# My background #I have been teaching college-level remedial reading and writing for multilingual English learners (ESL, EAL, EFL, ELF, ELL, ALP, ELD) since 2010. I earned both an MA in linguistics and a BA in computer science from UC San Diego. I recently completed the University of Maryland's TESOL certification for classroom teachers. As of 2023, I am Level I certified in teaching pronunciation using the Color Vowel system, which promotes fluency in speech and reading. I currently teach part-time in the public school system.# Hebrew #Cn y rd ths sntnc? If so, you can learn to read in Hebrew, a language usually written without vowels. Duolingo isn't always enough!I enjoy sharing my passion for lashon qodesh, the languages of the Bible, and Israel. I have successfully taught students from ages 6 to 82 to read aloud and translate these works: Scriptures, bar mitzvah Torah passages, bat mitzvah prophetic readings, the siddur, and modern Israeli Hebrew dialogs. I currently teach 1st and 4th graders in an after-school Hebrew program.# Additional graduate coursework and fieldwork in neurology, PEERS (r) social communication / autism, phonics, literacy skills, phonetics, phonology, morpho-phonemics, discourse analysis, computational linguistics (R and regular expressions), anatomy, language and the brain, first and second language acquisition, literacy (phonics, phonemic awareness, and letter recognition), articulation, stuttering, lifespan communication disorders (aphasia and childhood vocabulary lags, particularly in emerging bilinguals), and sociolinguistics / dialects. I have also completed parent-child early literacy college classes through California's First Five program.# Need to pass a professional exam? #I help prepare teachers to pass the CBEST and the CSET multiple subjects teaching exams. The CBEST pass rate for California first-time test-takers hovers at 70%, so it helps to have a tutor who assesses for appropriate word choice, past perfect use, and mechanics. Please email me a writing sample prior to our first meeting!# Other exams: WIDA , NACLO # ( linguistics , phonology , morphology , and morpho-semantics ) ; DLAB ( Defense Language Aptitude Battery - civilian and military ) ; GED ; GED en espanol. I have also started working with students on Japan's EIKEN exam.# Disclaimers #My teaching practice is student-centered: When you miss a confirmed session, I invoice your account for a 60-minute session of preparation time, but I do not invoice for make-up sessions that you and I schedule within two weeks. Please check your contract's monthly billing date and its annual expiration date so that you use hours before they expire and to assure that you schedule the hours in each month of the contract, either with me or with another Varsity Tutor.Varsity offers a program of small group classes. Your package may include classes and tutoring. Tutoring is one-to-one help that supports you on your path to achieving your learning goals and objectives. The Varsity Tutors platform allows students to invite a friend to join the session. I invoice for the session length, not the number of participants, but please check your contract as to whether there are charges based on the number of students in a session. Your meetings with me are tutoring sessions, not classes. Canceling sessions with a tutor does not cancel your contract with Varsity.Although I have experience creating and implementing IEPs and 504 plans and I have successfully prepared candidates to pass the civics and interview portions of the United States citizenship exam as well as the GED in both Spanish and English, please know that I cannot guarantee outcomes or compensate you financially if you do not pass exams nor do I currently hold a teaching credential or speech-language pathology license.

I graduated from the University of the West Indies in my home country Trinidad and Tobago as a medical doctor. After working for three years in Trinidad both in the public and private sectors I migrated to the United States in June 2013. I am currently awaiting a spot in residency, hopefully at the end of June 2015. It was a natural choice for me to spend the extra time immersed in my second love; teaching. In my time on the wards in Trinidad I had the honor of molding the minds of medical students. I not only helped them learn but I made them feel excited about medicine. I am very knowledgeable in subjects oriented around the medical field namely anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, endocrinology among others.Teaching is a skill that must be adapted to the individual student. I also believe syllabus oriented teaching is key to covering adequate material to allow a student to test well. I have solid communication and people skills that will allow me to easily establish rapport with my students and their parents. I pride myself in pushing past average, and I wish to share this trait with my students. I genuinely care about their learning. I am professional, knowledgeable and personable and these qualities will make me a great tutor.

I am originally from Texas and have a background in psychology and social work. My professional interest is in promoting positive child development for vulnerable children domestically and internationally. As a social worker I have studied and worked with children suffering from trauma. This background allows me to be able to handle difficult behaviors and create productive tutoring sessions. I love working with children because of their engaging spirit and optimism. I have traveled abroad and enjoy learning new things about other cultures and histories and pushing myself beyond my comfort zone. I also enjoy watching movies, reading books, and trying out new restaurants.

Learning is a lifelong process, and even the silliest things can be an opportunity to learn. My primary teaching strategy lies in working together to solve problems and fill in the gaps in a student's knowledge. We work through questions together and learn as we solve them. Though medical sciences are my focus, I have a broad knowledge base and use that base to bring science to life. From pop culture to politics, we can find common ground in order to link your everyday interests to your studies!I've worked with medical students, reviewing information with them and putting a different spin on concepts in order to make those concepts clear. I've also worked with GED prep students who are working out information anew. I have a background in psychiatry, which serves as a testament to the patient, non-judgmental approach that I bring to every interaction.I enjoy medicine and I enjoy people, and therefore also enjoy sharing information and coming up with new ways to present medical concepts.I know what it is like to put pressure on oneself to attain a specific grade or a specific title. I also know the profound effects of being able to demonstrate knowledge outside of the classroom. Once a student is addicted to understanding concepts, good grades follow in an effortless manner. On a personal note, I am often described as "bubbly," "infectious," "down-to-earth," and "a problem solver". Looking forward to meeting you!

I received my college education in three different states, providing me with a variety of learning experiences. Most recently, I completed my PhD in cellular and molecular medicine. I had the opportunity to be part of a unique PhD program in which I studied at the University of Arizona, but did my research at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.My tutoring experience is broad and I have experience tutoring children as young as 8 and adults as old as 40. I have tutored multiple subjects but my favorites include science, reading, and writing. I have always had a passion for knowledge and I enjoy sharing that with others. I like to tailor my tutoring style to each individual student. We all learn differently and we are all motivated differently. Some students need help memorizing material while others need help learning how to focus and be efficient. I believe it is my job as a tutor to find the best method for each individual.Besides creating scientific experiments and sharing my love for knowledge, I really enjoy being outdoors. I am involved in team sports. Most recently I was on a womens flag football team, which I enjoyed immensely. I also devote time to mentoring elementary-age children with behavioral problems.

I have extensive experience teaching in various capacities and now also tutoring. My previous teaching experience falls into three categories; teaching children, teens, and adults. While I began working with children when I assisted in Jewish Day Schools and Congregational schools at the beginning of college, I now am spending more time tutoring elementary reading and math. At the beginning of college, I worked as a teacher's aide at the Hebrew Day School of Montgomery County and at Ohr Kodesh Congregation. I also taught Hebrew School for several hours a week later on as a lead teacher at the Bethesda Chevy Chase Jewish Community Group later on. At these different schools, I worked with children whose ages ranged from kindergarten to sixth grade. Informed by the formal education courses I took in college, I learned to design Hebrew school curriculums, create lesson plans, and even to assist some children with special learning needs. I made use of multimedia techniques when I created the lesson plans and made sure that the kids gained exposure to the curriculum through art, music, and technology in addition to more traditional testing, quizzing, and memorizing exercises. When I worked with teens, I taught an elective course in Jewish story-telling and led a literary magazine workshop for teen-aged girls at a homeschooling program called Ashreinu Educational Programs for Girls. I worked on creating a milieu where the students felt comfortable expressing themselves creatively while acting in a respectful way.My work with adults involves tutoring college students in subjects that have included Hebrew, Communications, and even the fine arts. Thanks for considering me as a tutor.

After living in Germany for 15 years, my family moved to the United States in 2003. I went to Lower Merion High School for three years and then attended Temple University where I got my BA in History and German. I also completed coursework for a Minor in Mathematics. In 2011, I moved to Washington D.C. to get my MA in European History at American University.Throughout my undergraduate and graduate studies, I have tutored German and Mathematics, and I am eager to continue my work at Varsity Tutors. My goal is to become a teacher, either at the High School or College level.I believe that education and the process of educating are two-way streets, during which both parties learn and evolve constantly. Success, especially in tutoring, comes from building strong, personal relationships with each student, getting to know one's student, and letting the student know the tutor, also builds trust, which is essential for a healthy learning environment.I am eager to work with any student, and I am confident that through hard work and dedication anyone can succeed in any subject or topic.I look forward to working with you, be it in Mathematics, German, or History!!

I graduated from Tufts University with majors in English and Music. I am especially passionate about writing and literature, and truly enjoy working with students to make their writing clear, concise, and effective. Over the past ten years, I have tutored students ranging from middle schoolers to doctoral candidates. During my time in graduate school, I worked as a teaching assistant, a writing tutor, and an associate instructor--so I have a good amount of experience teaching. I have helped with admissions essays, personal statements, resumes, dissertations, SAT prep, and much more. I am easy-going, friendly, and patient, and I'd love the opportunity to work with you!
