How can a tutor help your child master the HSPT?

The High School Placement Test is an exam designed and administered by certain private high schools. Students wishing to be considered for admittance into said schools must take the exam to be considered. The exam covers a wide variety of subjects, including language, math, quantitative skills, reading, verbal skills, and optional or additional sections depending on the school. The exam is typically taken in eighth grade before entering high school. Preparing for such a large exam at that stage can be overwhelming for students, but with the help of a tutor, your student can work through their test prep work. For help finding HSPT tutoring in Washington, D.C., contact the educational directors at Varsity Tutors.

The HSPT is a non-standardized exam, which means that different schools have different versions of the exam and include different sections. Finding study material for a test that varies by school can be difficult, but a personal Washington, D.C., HSPT tutor can create a curriculum and materials that are catered to the exact test your student may be taking. Not many eighth-grade students can be expected to prepare effectively for such a large exam on their own. Staying organized and focused enough to be effective is difficult, which is why a tutor is a great idea. The tutor can create a lesson plan designed to keep your student on track heading into test day. There is a lot to cover before the exam, so having a schedule to cover every subject is important.

Session Summaries by HSPT Tutors

HSPT Tutoring review by Kia in Washington DC
The student took a Quantitative 30 minute quiz and did very well. On his pre test he got 20, and this time around he got 39. He even completed all questions and had time to go back and review. We want to get him up to 45 on this section, because that will set him up to score very high. We began reviewing his wrong answers, and will continue on Saturday.

HSPT Tutoring review by Whitney in Washington DC
We worked extremely hard on the logic portion of the assessment and refreshed on some of the quantitative. The student has understanding of the quantitative and math portions. He consistently answers every question correctly. Reading Comprehension has steadily become more solid, punctuation, grammar, and analogies are solid as well. I will be leaving him with extra practice.

HSPT Tutoring review by Zachary in Washington DC
The student completed a verbal section since our last session, and she did an excellent job (51/60; 85%). We reviewed the items she missed, focusing on applying strategies to identify word meaning and tone. We continued discussing root words and went over some new roots after a review of words using last week's roots. Next, we focused on the quantitative section. I had her complete the end of a section to simulate being short on time. She worked on estimating, finding quick questions, and guessing strategies. She showed great improvement since last time and was able to move more efficiently through questions. We finished reviewing commonly misused words to prepare for the language section. At our next session will review some of the word pairs, such as sit/set and lay/lie. She should complete a quantitative section before our next meeting.
