I am a graduate of Allegheny College, where I received my Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and minored in English. I am currently enrolled at the City University of New York, where I am working as a graduate student for a PhD in biochemistry. I mostly tutor science and math, both of which I enjoy thoroughly. My goal as a tutor is to help my students in understanding and gaining interest in the subjects instead of pure memorization. In my spare time I enjoy ice hockey, skiing, and mountain biking.

I am a Garifuna American from the Bronx, NYC. I graduated from Allegheny College in 2014 with a dual degree in Psychology and Spanish. I am currently a PhD track graduate student at the University of Texas at Austin in the Spanish and Portuguese department. My focus is on women and their identity formation on the Caribbean coast of Guatemala. I have had experience preparing lessons, editing papers, and teaching college student as a Teacher assistant. I love the idea of tutoring because I get to interact one on one with students. I hope that students learn as much as they can from my lesson and hopefully I learn from them as well. I see tutoring as a give and take between the student and tutor.I focus on the oral history and traditions aspect of anthropology along with aspect of ethnography. My job will be to guide you through the reading and understanding of the work researchers do in various communities. There will be key vocabulary words and concepts that might require further independent research if the student is interested.I have been studying Spanish for seven years now. If the student wishes we can focus on different aspects such as grammar, literature, writing, reading, speaking and or listening. I will leave it up to the student to decide where they think they need more help. I am happy to do a little of everything as well.
Passionate about delivering software that solves business or social problems, in addition to I am dedicated to helping others succeed through education.
Hi, I'm Elizabeth Krochka, but you can call me Beth. I'm a 23 year old Allegheny College graduate with a passion for learning and teaching. One day, I'd like to teach and I hope that working with Varsity Tutors and my clients will help me prepare to be a better teacher. I've always loved school, mainly because I had teachers who were extremely inspired by what they were teaching. They are why I think passion is the key to teaching and I hope to share my passion for learning with my clients. I think that a good teacher or tutor can be the difference between learning being a chore or an opportunity. Passion is contagious and once a student or client can view the information in a new light, what was once impossible becomes a conquered challenge.
Bachelors, International Politics and Economics, 2014 Graduate: Calumet College of Saint Joseph: Current Grad Student, Masters of Arts in Teaching, 2017
I graduated from Xavier University in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science in Sports Medicine/Athletic Training. In 1998, I earned my Master of Physical Therapy from Allegheny University of the Health Sciences. After working as a physical therapist for several years, I continued practicing and earned my Doctor of Physical Therapy in 2014. I have been a clinical instructor to numerous physical therapy students. In addition, I taught Therapeutic Exercise and Therapeutic Modalities & Pharmacology as an adjunct professor for athletic training students. Because I had experience in opening two physical therapy clinics for a hospital employer and a private practice employer, I decided to utilize that experience to open my own independent physical therapy practice in 2015. After earning my NASM Personal Training Certification and pursuing specializations in Fitness Nutrition and Corrective Exercise, I closed my physical therapy practice in 2021 to focus on my current wellness business. I have passed the NATA-BOC, NATA, NASM-CPT, NASM-FNS, and NASM-CES exams on the first attempt. I know how to prepare, study, and pass professional exams! I currently assist with coaching a USATF XC & Track team; however, I miss teaching academically. I am excited to join the Varsity Tutor platform to teach and mentor students who are interested in athletic training, physical therapy, personal training, and nutrition. I am a gym-rat and an endurance junkie! I workout almost 2 hour every day because I love how exercise increases my energy. I believe my experience across the medical-fitness industry will provide students with great insight into both academic and real-world learning.
I started my career with the intention of getting a PhD in molecular neurobiology, and developed a passion for education. I would love to help you grow as a learner as I continue to grow as an educator.
I am a graduate of Catholic Theological Union in Chicago with a D.Min. in Practical Theology/Cross-Cultural. I also obtained a Masters of Arts in Higher Education Administration from Geneva College in Pennsylvania and a Masters of Arts in Applied Theology from Wheeling Jesuit University in West Virginia. My teaching certification is in the area of Social Studies, 7-12th, and was obtained at California University of Pennsylvania. I have worked in education for over 30 years on the secondary level and more recently within higher education. My background includes working in various areas of student development on the collegiate level, serving as an adjunct faculty member, coaching various club and varsity sports such as rugby, lacrosse, and track. Through my work I have been able to travel to Australia, Peru, Turkey, Canada, and El Salvador, and had the opportunity to tour Europe during my college years as a member of the college choir. I participated in both choral and instrumental programs throughout my high school and college careers and have sung in Chorus Austin more recently. I am passionate about history, anthropology, human migration, religion, and theology. I love to explore the intersections of the various social sciences. My hope is to help students develop their critical thinking abilities and learn how to ask questions that will enhance their learning. As a tutor, I have work in history and am also very comfortable in various religious areas. My last posting centered in interfaith and worldview diversity areas. In my personal time I love to read, still play rugby occasionally, and dance salsa, swing, country, and tango whenever I can.
I am passionate about helping students gain confidence in reading comprehension, writing, history, elementary/middle school math and governance subjects. I believe in a patient approach to learning where student needs are the priority, and working on advance step by step through their educational goals is important for long term growth.

I am a graduate of a school in northwest Pennsylvania with a degree in Biochemistry & Piano Performance and plan on attending Medical School in the near future. In my four years there, I was selected by the department chairs to be the designated tutor for Mathematics (Precalculus to Calculus 3), Organic and General Chemistry, Biology (Cellular, Molecular, Developmental, and Genetics), and Physics, each for minimum of one year. The reason I agreed to tutor again and again each year they approached me is because I simply loved it. It is hard to describe the wonderful feeling of seeing a student you helped master the material in front of you and run through problems like they're nothing. My favorite question since childhood has been "why?". I was never a fan of just memorizing facts, because not only do you not really understand the material, but you are likely to forget it. That principle has transitioned over to my tutoring style. We start from the most basic, simplest core of the concept. Once we understand that, we slowly work our way up until you understand even the most difficult concepts..soon you're able to tell me the reason for every variable in the Schrdinger equation. Sometimes my students also develop a passion for knowing why and I love it. I'm not a tutor automaton though; my other hobbies/passions include piano, weight lifting, classical music (and concerts), composition, and environmental activism. In addition to tutoring, I've spent time in my institution as the head of research regarding nuclear import receptors via the genetic engineering of yeast to express the human AR receptor and the transformation and construction of plasmids.
I am a great tutor because I am very personable and adept at helping explain concepts via analogy and demonstration. Additionally, I am proficient in a wide range of subjects. Finally, I enjoy teaching and take great joy in helping others learn.
I love teaching students the beauty of mathematics and science! For the past five years, I've tutored students at the high school and college level. Subjects taught include Chemistry, Physics, Calculus, Trigonometry, Algebra 1/2, Pre-Algebra, Pre-Calculus and SAT Math Prep. I'm eager to help you succeed!
I am a graduate of Allegheny College where I received my Bachelor of Science in Biology. Additionally, I minored in Spanish and Global Health Studies during my time there. I also recently graduated from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine where I received my Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) and Master of Medical Science (MMS) degrees. During my time at Allegheny College, I was a Chemistry Laboratory Teaching Assistant as well as a Chemistry Tutor. I was also on the pre-health track and I am currently a Resident Pharmacist within the UPMC health system. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about science, health, and language - specifically Biology, Chemistry, and Spanish. I believe that education is one of the most important aspects of life, as we are all lifelong learners. I hope to bring this appreciation for learning to all of the students that I tutor so that they can become enthusiastic, motivated, and curious to the many possibilities surrounding them. In my free time, I enjoy baking, cooking, reading, exercising, meditation, and listening to music.
Hi there! My name is Sean McClain, I recently graduated from Allegheny College with a bachelor's degree in Physics, specializing in Biophysics. I've been a TA for more than 10 introductory physics classes (both calculus and algebra-based) and a writing/speech TA for two classes. I am currently serving in the PA National Guard as an officer candidate to work with the Chemical Corps and teaching at Bethune Middle School with City Year.I enjoy finding ways to make math and science fun and engaging, and I hope that I can help you achieve your goals in whatever subjects we tackle together! I specialize in ACT/SAT prep as well, so if you need help in those areas don't hesitate to ask!
I have a PhD in language and literature from Kent State University. I have an MFA from the University of Michigan and as both a writer, theorist and part-time faculty member suffice it to say that I am fascinated by all things pertaining to language.
I recently retired from a 35+ year finance career working as an analyst and in project management. Upon further reflection, I prefer to call this next phase of my life as a repurposing rather than a retirement. I have a Bachelor of Arts in International Economics from Allegheny College and am a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charterholder. I am currently volunteering in the Adult Literacy program at the Brooklyn Public Library in Brooklyn, NY where I tutor sections in English, math, and financial literacy. I have found great satisfaction in assisting others in developing their skills in these areas. In addition to tutoring in the above literacy subjects, I also have strong Microsoft Excel skills developed throughout my finance career and supplemented by outside course work. This background gives me the ability to customize student training in specific areas that would best meet the student's needs. My teaching style is to take the subject matter, break it down into digestible and logical parts and then provide relevant examples or application of the material so that the student can better understand the concepts. Also, my consideration and understanding of the student's desired outcome from the tutoring sessions is critical to their success. My initial experience teaching began with coaching youth travel team basketball. Basketball can be a somewhat complex sport. It can be challenging to explain the different offensive and defensive concepts to young players while at the same time keeping the game fun and engaging. Some of my most rewarding and valuable experiences were with players who initially struggled but were then able to incorporate what they learned in practice and translate that to their play on the court. In addition, over the course of my finance career, I have coached and mentored many colleagues in the finance profession. I view the opportunity to tutor students as a continuation of these prior teaching-learning experiences, and I aim to bring out the best in a student's learning process.
I graduated Allegheny College with a B.S. in Political Science and Computer science in 2014. Since then, I have worked at Citigroup and Brooklyn Law School as a programmer.
I graduated with a BA from Allegheny College in 2019 with a double major in English and Theatre and a minor in Education Studies. While I was at Allegheny, I was a tutor for the America Reads program where I was a classroom tutor in all subjects for a 6th grade class for all 4 years. I then graduated from Pitt's MAT program in 2020, and earned my English 7-12 Teaching Certificate, and completed my student teaching in an 8th grade Language Arts class. This year, I have been a long term substitute in a 6th grade English class for the entire school year. I also have experience tutoring for SATs and up through 8th grade level math. My main interests are in English and Literature, but I also enjoy Theatre and Drama, skiing, traveling, and knitting. I would describe myself as energetic, hardworking and friendly!
It has been said that, If you can't explain something simply, you don't know it well enough. In my experience as a longtime student, I have found this quote to be accurate. My strength as a tutor is that I have the ability to break down complex ideas and language into as simple a package as possible. Both as a successful student and in teaching I have found myself to be adept at using this particular skill.I graduated from Allegheny College with a BA in English and a minor in Economics. I have always enjoyed learning and have a passion for sharing my knowledge with others. As an tutor, my favorite subjects to teach are Algebra and English. I consider those skills to be the building blocks of a solid academic foundation for High School and beyond. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy reading whenever possible, especially fantasy and science fiction novels. I also am an avid board game player, from Chess to Settlers of Catan.
I'm passionate about helping students reach their goals because I believe every student has the potential to succeed. I have six years of experience working with students in various settings, from an environmental education camp in northwest Pennsylvania to a bilingual school in Costa Rica. Most recently, I was a teaching assistant for undergraduate journalism classes at Arizona State University from August 2015 to May 2017. I also served as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Dominican Republic from 2012 to 2015. While I was there, I taught environmental education courses, helped coach a volleyball team, and taught an entrepreneurship course.I earned a master's degree in journalism from Arizona State University in May 2017. I attained a bachelor's degree in environmental science, with a minor in Spanish, from Allegheny College in Pennsylvania. I would love to tutor students in Spanish or environmental science -- some of my favorite subjects. I've spent more than four years living in Spanish-speaking countries and I love opportunities to help other people learn Spanish.Outside of academia, I enjoy outdoor activities such as running and hiking. I'm also an avid reader and I love to cook.
I am a junior at Allegheny College who is majoring in Economics and triple-minoring in Mathematics, Psychology, and Dance and Movement Studies. Growing up, I was always one of the students who helped my classmates when they didn't understand certain problems.
I graduated from Allegheny College with an English degree and high honors in 2009. I went on to Penn State to study biochemistry and premed. My schooling has been diverse! While I can teach various subjects, these are my favorites:1) ADMISSIONS ESSAYS! You heard it, I love this challenging form of writing. My previous clients often came to me frustrated and uncertain where to begin. After tutoring, though, they were admitted with great essays. I'd say my tutoring style is thorough and demanding, especially for those applying for reach or Ivy League schools. I'm also convinced, though, that you will have fun and let your personality shine through!2) Organic Chemistry and Physics. I actually struggled with science in high school. After high school physics, I was convinced I was "terrible at it" and swore I would "never take science again." Despite this, I had felt drawn to science since childhood, and I had a nagging desire to learn it. I finally decided to gather up my courage and study biochemistry at Penn State. I had to learn step-by-step through hard work, but I ultimately did great, and I learned the material very thoroughly. Who knew physics would turn out to be my favorite class?I can also tutor general chemistry, biochemistry, biology, genetics, and statistics, and I can teach writing in all its forms (grammar, English essays, scientific writing, etc.) Finally, if you need a break from all these intense subjects, I could always introduce you my two favorite hobbies- piano and salsa dancing!
I recently graduated from Allegheny College in Meadville, PA, where I majored in international studies and French. In college, I loved studying foreign cultures, politics, and economics, and was fortunate enough to spend one semester each in France and Ecuador. I began working as a tutor and teaching assistant at Allegheny, and spent the 2011-12 school year teaching English in a French public high school.Due to my studies and experiences, my best subjects are Spanish, French, government, and economics. I love to discuss and help students understand these subjects. As a student of these subjects myself, I can help others understand the challenges and difficulties they face, and help them create step-by-step solutions to these problems. I believe that with a little bit of patience and will, all students can build the skills they need to succeed in foreign language and the social sciences.
I am a pharmacist and lifelong academic. I began tutoring while earning my Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience and Psychology. I soon realized that helping students develop their skills and excel brought me great joy. I continued to tutor throughout my Doctor of Pharmacy program, and carried this passion into my career as a pharmacist, where I precept students and resident learners. I believe in fostering autonomy and independence. I do this through open discussion in a comfortable, non-intimidating environment, and by encouraging students to drive their learning and developing critical thinking skills. Watching a student reach their goals, gain self-confidence, and engage in learning are the most rewarding aspects of tutoring. My practice as a pharmacist is built upon a strong foundation of pharmacology knowledge. In graduating Cum Laude from pharmacy school, I gained a comprehensive understanding of how drugs interact with the physiology of the human body. During my time in school, I was recruited as a peer tutor and guided my peers to succeed academically. I continue to teach students and resident learners as a pharmacist, sharing my passion for the application of pharmacology through patient care.I have been tutoring pharmacology students in pharmacy, nursing, and medicine for over 2 years. I specialize in teaching pharmacy calculations and NAPLEX preparation, for which I have my own materials to supplement learning from RxPrep and other courses.
I am a current PhD student in Molecular and Cellular Biology at Boston University. I moved to Boston in 2013 to pursue research with the Belfer Institute at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute after graduating with a B.S. in Biology and a minor in French from Allegheny College. Outside of my PhD work, I am an avid skier, runner, traveler and beach goer. My experience as a teacher spans from my responsibilities as a graduate teaching fellow in Instructional Biology at Boston University and my role as a research mentor of undergraduate students. I firmly believe that an effective tutor should be passionate, engaging and patient, as well as cognizant of the individual learning style of their student. As a strong visual learner myself, I appreciate the importance of tailoring individual lessons to complement a student's strengths. I am excited to work with you to achieve your academic goals!
I am currently working towards my Masters of Arts degree in Literary and Cultural Studies at Carnegie Mellon University. Some of my current interests are postcolonial studies, literary journalism, and memoir writing. Before attending Carnegie Mellon University, I graduated from Allegheny College where I received my Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. At Allegheny College I primarily focused on Gothic and Victorian literature, postcolonial theory, representations of animals and the environment in literature, and poetry composition. In addition to my educational experience at Allegheny College, I also had the wonderful opportunity to collaborate with one of my professors on a co-authored paper titled "Shakespeare's Starlings" which will be available in this November's edition of "Environmental Humanities"! I tutor literature-related subjects ranging from High School English to College Essay Writing, as I am most passionate about this wonderful field, and eager to use my academic experiences to help students connect and engage with meaningful texts in a more enriching manner than is typically fostered by a traditional classroom setting, where ample time to discuss the richness of cultural works is so often cut short. Additionally, I love helping students develop thoughtful and original analyses of various literary works, because working through analytical and cultural problems improves critical thinking skills, encourages creativity, and promotes the ability to communicate effectively both verbally, and in a written format. Finally, I am deeply committed to helping students in any field excel at essay writing! I absolutely love editing papers, and I take a very hands-on approach in doing so by encouraging students to read their papers aloud with me in order to mutually identify and discuss any grammatical or logistical errors. It is very important to me that students leave a tutoring session understanding why they are correcting errors, not just how to, so that they fully grasp how to preemptively identify similar problems in future papers that they compose. I have seen considerable success using this technique, and most people I've worked with have advanced their writing by two letter grades after working with me three to four times. While I am most passionate about tutoring students working on essays in the fields of English and Literature, I have written in a wide variety of styles including: book reviews, computer science write-ups, data stories, literary journalism pieces, historiographical essays, memoir pieces, research proposals, personal statements, poetry, philosophy essays, satire, science reports, and more! Essay writing can be fun, engaging, and rewarding when approached in the right way, and I strive to bring the enthusiasm and love I have for this essential skill to every tutoring session I conduct.
I have been a Varsity Tutor for 4 years now and recently taught Calculus II at Rutgers University. My specialty is Calculus I and II as well as AP Calc AB and BC. The quality that I feel makes me a successful tutor is that I find a way to help each individual student understand concepts. Not every student learns the same way. I feel it is up to me to find the best way to teach each student.
I graduated from Allegheny College with a BS in Chemistry last Spring. I am very passionate about chemistry and will begin working for my PhD this fall at the University of Maryland. In the meantime, I am excited to be back in Manhattan to tutor students in chemistry, biology, physics and mathematics. I have had a love for math and science for a long time and believe that the problem solving skills needed to crack these subjects are critical for students looking to be successful in whatever field they choose to pursue. For this reason, I push my students to not only master the material, but also teach strategies to recognize problem structures that will help them tackle new material in the future. In my spare time I enjoy playing soccer and traveling. I have spent a good deal of time in South America and am always looking for excuses to return. I truly enjoyed tutoring students in chemistry during college, but as a graduate of Beacon High School in Manhattan I am excited to be back in the City and working with New York's next round of science and math enthusiasts.
Hi! My name is Evan, I graduated from Allegheny College in May 2015 with a B.S. in Biology and a minor in Psychology, and after graduation I moved to Pittsburgh to begin my career. Besides tutoring for Varsity Tutors, I work as a Laboratory Technician 2 for PPG in Springdale, PA. My laboratory uses fundamental aspects of chemistry to run testing on electrocoat paints in order to determine their respective viabilities as manufacturing products. I love what I do! I currently work 40 hours a week in my Lab Technician position, but would be available after 6 pm as well as weekends (when scheduled in advance).I have worked as a Biology tutor for both the AP Biology Test as well as the SAT Subject Test for Biology for the last two summers through Maine Prep, one of Maine's premier test-preparation companies. At Maine Prep I learned about what it takes to be a successful tutor, and I also learned about the satisfaction that one can gain from helping students understand previously unknown concepts. Now that I'm in the Pittsburgh area I would love to continue expanding on my tutoring experience- I enjoy working with students and someday I would like to be a Professor in Biology!
I'm passionate about helping students because I love watching people grow into their potential and become more confident in their abilities. There's something uniquely rewarding about seeing someone connect the dots for themselves and knowing you helped make that moment possible. While I haven't worked with students in a traditional academic setting, I've taught numerous tennis lessons over the years, which taught me how to adjust my approach for different personalities and skill levels breaking down complex movements, offering encouragement, and celebrating progress. I also spent a good deal of time as a student working with tutors myself, which gave me a strong appreciation for how effective one-on-one learning can be. I bring that same energy and flexibility to academic tutoring, where building trust and tailoring each session to the individual is just as important. I graduated from Allegheny College with a major in Political Science and a minor in Spanish, and I currently tutor U.S. and world politics, U.S. and world history, and introductory Spanish. My favorite subject to tutor is U.S. Government and Politics I'm always excited to help students understand how political systems work, why they matter, and how they impact daily life. I believe that understanding government helps students become more informed, empowered citizens. My teaching philosophy is centered around curiosity, connection, and confidence. I aim to make each session engaging and student-led, using real-world examples, conversation, and the occasional creative analogy to keep things relatable. I focus on meeting students where they are, adapting my approach to their pace, and encouraging them to ask questions freely. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy playing golf, reading across a variety of genres, and cycling around New York City especially when I get to explore new neighborhoods or scenic routes. I bring that same sense of exploration and patience to my tutoring sessions, always aiming to make learning feel both structured and full of discovery.
Besides having fun, going out, playing video games, traveling to different parts of the city, reading, playing billiards (or pool) and everything else. I am just a regular college graduate looking to advance and expand my knowledge to fulfill my career goal as an engineer. As of now, I am in possession of two degrees. In 2014 I received my Bachelor's of Science in Mathematics at Allegheny College, located in Meadville, Pennsylvania. I recently received my certificate of completion of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Design in the New York City College of Technology Green Advanced Manufacturing Collaborative Certificate Program in Brooklyn, NY. As of now, I work multiple jobs mostly in education and tutoring. For starters, I have been tutoring since June 2013. I work with a group of students that are widely diverse in age, grade level and subject difficulty. My experience with teaching made me realize how much merit there is to helping other students succeed with their academic endeavors. Personally, I know how it is to struggle with difficult subjects and having no one to assist in understanding the concepts better and I want to make sure nobody else falls in that predicament. For as long as I can remember, Mathematics has always been my favorite subject. Hence the reason I went to college to study it in the first place. And as of now I have been teaching and tutoring students on Mathematics and Science, working with people such as yourselves on an individual level to make sure you understand all of the subject material clearly and concisely. My teaching philosophy is to explain everything simply and thoroughly along with some practice both inside and outside the classroom. As of now, my teaching style has been very flexible to accommodate every student's individual learning needs and styles to ensure full efficiency. Besides being flexible, I also like to explain things in an alternative perspective to show students different ways of thinking outside the box. My father always used to tell me never do a half done job for anybody. If it is worth doing, it should be done right. As your tutor/ teacher, my job is not done until you succeed. I look forward to working with you all and I will help you to the best of my abilities.
I appreciate the opportunity to learn and it is always good to pass on what I have been taught as well. I'm happy to help anyone who wants my help and who genuinely wants to learn a different language.Learning and speaking a different languages opens not just doors of opportunities, but it teaches you about a new culture and a completely different world than the one what we really live in presently. It opens your mind to other possibilities and possibly new explorations and adventures whether it's trying new foods, or taking a trip to a place you wouldn't have previously.
From a young age I knew I was destined to teach. I have always enjoyed reading, writing, and learning in any context and have a desire for knowledge.Upon graduating college, I decided that my passion and career path would center around learning and passing on the knowledge I have acquired from my schooling, work, travel, and general life experiences.Taking a non-traditional path, I began my career in education by teaching English as a second language in South Korea. I broadened my horizons both professionally and personally over my time in the country.Upon returning to the United States, I followed a more traditional path by entering the private sector by accepting a position in the loan department at PNC Bank. After only a few short months, I was appointed a trainer and mentor to new employees, restarting my teaching career in an unusual way. Passing my wisdom onto other employees every day reignited my passion for teaching.Since leaving the bank, I have being pursing my dream as an educator. I have tutored 1-on-1, taught classrooms of both adults and children, and even enjoying training my dog, Shiloh, away from work.I will use my experience, education, and enthusiasm to help you along your academic journey. Every session, I will give you 110% to help reach your goals, and we will have fun along the way.
