MS University of Edinburgh • BA Mcgill University
1+ Years Tutoring

I am a graduate of McGill University (BA First Class Honors) and the University of Edinburgh (MSc First Class Honors with Distinction) with over eight years of tutoring experience. I am currently a curriculum developer for a company which creates relatable and culturally-literate courses for middle and high-schools, and am particularly adept at communicating and explaining concepts in a quirky, engaging, and intelligent manner. I was named Scotland International Young Thinker of the Year 2014 for exactly that sort of work. Much of my tutoring background is in test-prep and essay coaching, which I enjoy because it allows the tutor and student to think strategically together, and work as a team to achieve concrete results. I have worked with students ranging in age from 6-32, and believe that, in an educational context, a few jokes never hurt anybody. I love reading and learning, and my educational approach is centered around making the material just as engaging to students as it is to me. I think J.K. Rowlings, the writer of Harry Potter, is just as brilliant as Stephen Hawking, and in my free time, I manage my (terrible) fantasy baseball team, write songs for my comedy band, and crack jokes about terrible science-fiction movies with my friends.

I am a recent graduate of Cornell University, where I received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and graduated Magna Cum Laude. Over the past several years, I have worked with students from diverse backgrounds and experiences tutoring thermodynamics (my personal favorite), chemistry, and math. I have also tutored in the past for ACT/SAT and other subjects such as history, but I am deeply passionate about science and engineering. I tend to push my students to understand conceptual topics, as opposed to rote or algorithmic learning. In my free time, I love to bake sourdough, learn about history, garden, and recently started biking again.

I am excited to be tutoring. In my experience teaching, I have learned that empowerment in a subject is a combination of efficient guidance from me and a willingness to improve from my students. By signing up for tutoring, students are already taking the first step to mastering whatever areas in which they may be having difficulty. I won't do all the work for my students but I will never leave them to figure out everything by themselves, as that defeats the purpose of a tutor. I will constantly assess understanding during the learning process, thus gradually giving my students the confidence that they have moved into deeper understanding of material. With the right instruction, everyone is capable of overcoming those problem subjects, and I am happy to help along the way.

I am currently a sophomore at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, majoring in Human Development with a minor in Education. I tutor a variety of subjects, I am the most passionate about English. I have previously tutored high school English, focusing on thesis development, grammatical skills, and creative writing. My experience creating weekly curriculums for students in preschool through 12th grade as an activity facilitator for Chautauqua Institution allowed me to refine many of my teaching skills. I was especially enthusiastic about my lessons on poetry and nature literature. Although my interest in teaching began in high school, my Education minor has given me more hands-on experience working with students. The minor has also introduced me to new teaching methods, as I have been able to dissect education theory and policy. In my free time, I read a lot of non-fiction, draw, and watch the West Wing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students from across Hamilton's 18 schools and 6 school districts with personalized tutoring. Whether your student attends a school in the Hamilton City School District or one of the surrounding districts, we match them with tutors who understand local curriculum standards and can support their specific academic goals.

Personalized 1-on-1 instruction helps students master Ohio's learning standards at their own pace, which is especially valuable in Hamilton where the average student-teacher ratio of 17.1:1 means classroom instruction often moves quickly. Tutors work with students on targeted skill gaps, test preparation for Ohio assessments, and building confidence in core subjects like math and reading.

Hamilton students frequently seek help with math, reading, and writing—subjects that build foundations for success across all grade levels. We also connect students with tutors for test prep (including Ohio standardized tests), algebra, geometry, science, and subject-specific support for middle and high school coursework. The specific needs vary by grade level and individual student goals.

The first session is focused on getting to know your student and understanding their academic needs, learning style, and goals. The tutor will assess current skill levels, identify areas for improvement, and develop a personalized plan that aligns with your student's school curriculum and your family's expectations. This foundation helps ensure every future session is targeted and effective.

Tutoring costs vary based on the subject, tutor expertise, and frequency of sessions—we work with families to find options that fit their budget and schedule. Whether your student needs weekly support, intensive help before a test, or catch-up work during the school year, Varsity Tutors can customize a plan that works for your family's needs.

When students fall behind, personalized 1-on-1 tutoring provides the focused attention and pacing adjustments that classroom settings often can't offer. A tutor can identify exactly where your student's understanding breaks down, reteach concepts in a different way, and build confidence through practice—all while working directly with the curriculum your student's Hamilton school is using.

Varsity Tutors connects students with expert tutors who have strong subject knowledge and experience teaching. Many hold degrees in their subject areas or have extensive classroom teaching experience. All tutors are vetted for their ability to work effectively with students, and we match your student with someone whose expertise and teaching style align with their needs.

Getting started is simple—tell us about your student's academic needs, grade level, and goals, and we'll match them with an appropriate tutor. You can discuss scheduling, subjects, and any specific concerns during the matching process. Most families are connected with a tutor within a few days and can schedule the first session at a time that works for your family.
