I graduated with a degree in English Literature from Ohio State University in 2013, and then completed a masters degree in English at Trinity College Dublin. When my program in Ireland ended, though, I changed gears and decided to pursue a post-baccalaureate program to complete my pre-med requirements at Cleveland State University. While studying at CSU, I worked as a medical scribe for an internist at University Hospitals. I completed my program, and took the MCAT, last spring. Im currently working for a pediatrician in Boston while I wait to hear back from medical schools.I enjoy helping other student prepare for the MCAT because it is such a significant step on the path to becoming a physician. I come from a long line of teachers. My father, sister, grandfather, aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces all chose teaching as their life's work.Even at a very early age it was becoming apparent that teaching would become a large part of my future. I remember sitting in on one of my father's classes. I was so proud of my dad as I watched him interact with his students. It was obvious the class loved him as they hung onto every word from his mouth. I hoped and dreamed to be just like him one day.At 15 it became more clear that the teaching profession would become an integral part of my future. I was a gymnast and inevitably I would gravitate over to one of my teammates who was struggling with a new trick. I would spend my practice time teaching my teammate how to get that new trick and it occurred time and time again. I actually got as excited as my teammate was when they got that new skill.That excitement just continued to grow as I was offered a free masters degree program (plus compensation) at West Virginia University when I agreed to assistant coach their women's gymnastics team and teach classes. The team had never made it to regionals before I got there. By my second year not only did the team make it to regionals but WON regionals then went on to Nationals and ended up being the third best team in the U.S.A.There were several more success stories during my two decades of teaching/coaching and counseling. I opened my own private gyms and developed numerous national and international level athletes and champions.Teaching continues to make me happy and proud of what I've accomplished and the 100's of student's lives that I've touched.Looking back, sitting in my dad's class as a 12 year old helped me make one of the most important and fulfilling decisions of my life. becoming a teacher.

I have BA's in Political Science and Classics from The Ohio State University, and an MA in Classics from Cornell University. In each of these degrees, I have studied a wide variety of literature--philosophy, tragedy, ancient and modern novels, and even a bit of graffiti. I work in three languages--English, Latin, and (my favorite) Ancient Greek. I evaluate these various kinds of literature using Black feminist theories, which allows me to reveal their complex depictions of race, gender, enslavement, and other important social issues. As a tutor, my goal is to help students connect literature to the forces that shape their own experiences as readers, whether those forces are a zeal for opposing racism, a desire to read for fun, a combination of these, or something else entirely. Every text has endless implications, and I'm excited to help students identify and unpack them.

My reason for teaching is to share what knowledge I have gained and to help other people learn. I am not an educator if I simply give out information; I am only a teacher if someone learns. I feel that it is my responsibility to present material in such a manner that students can do well. The material must be presented with enthusiasm, clarity, and an awareness of the level of understanding of the students. All too often instructors present material at their level of understanding and forget that their knowledge has come with years of exposure to a particular field. A question or concept that may be very familiar to an instructor is unknown to a student who has just begun to learn. I try my best to avoid what I may perceive as a small jump in logic because it often becomes a tremendous leap for the students. My responses to questions have a variety of sophistication. I attempt to provide gradually decreasing vagueness as I answer a question. While a student is looking for "the answer", I try to never answer a question on the first iteration. Their question is often met with a little bit of background and a question for them to explore. This may occur several times before student satisfaction is achieved, but they have had to answer their own question when the process is over. Every aspect of my teaching style is meant to provide positive reinforcement to assure students that their questions and contributions are valued and important to their learning.

I am a graduate of the University of Mount Union, earning my Bachelor of Arts in Japanese Language and Culture, and a Graduate of Ohio University in Athens with a Master of Arts in Asian Studies. During my third year attending Mount Union (2017), I studied abroad in Nagasaki, Japan, from late March to early August.I have worked teaching 7th to 9th-grade students Japanese for a program in my hometown called Kids in College. Between 2018 and 2020, I was involved with the Japanese Cultural Hour at Ohio University. This included scheduling events, fundraisers, and planning budgets for the year.
