I am a 2008 joint degree graduate of Kent State University. I earned bachelor's and master's degrees in the fields of Economics, Political Science and Public Administration, as well as a Certificate in Leadership from the College of Business. I was awarded several honors: summa cum laude; Phi Beta Kappa; and University Honors with Distinction in Political Science. I went on to earn a law degree from Washington University in St. Louis (#18, US News & World Report) where I focused my studies on private law matters and public service. My life motto is best summarized by the words of Nelson Mandela. He once proclaimed that "[t]here is no passion to be found in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living." I am determined to maximize my own potential and I am driven to heighten my level of cultural competency through global travel. As you can glean from my academic background I am deeply committed to the acquisition and refinement of knowledge. I enjoy helping others gain access to meaningful educational opportunities and excel in them, which is why I have developed a career in higher education administration. I currently work with international students and scholars in a law school, but my experience with academic services dates back to my time as an undergraduate writing tutor at Kent State. This is were I cultivated the ability to modify my teaching style in accordance with individual learning differences. In other words, I do not enter a tutoring or advising session with a one-size-fits-all mentality. I put my full energy toward helping students develop a personal writing style that is shaped by best practices and can be applied to a number of works, including personal statements, cover letters and analysis papers.

Q&A with Jera

My job as a tutor/teacher is to help each student unearth, refine and apply the skills needed to think critically and express resulting thoughts in a clear manner. I focus on leveraging the abilities that each student finds to be their organic, natural strengths in order to build a foundation for relaxed and cooperative learning. Best practices, of course, guide specific tasks, but I am always open to modifying them based on the student’s goals and interests while accomplishing any defined objectives.
