I am a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University with my degree in biology and religion. Following undergrad I obtained my certification in clinical microbiology from Saint Louis University. I worked at Quest Diagnostics for 4.5 years and while at Quest I obtained my Master's degree in Public Health with a Concentration in Biosecurity and Disaster Preparedness. While I was in school I spent four summers as a camp counselor. Additionally, I have experience teaching seminars with adult student and my peers. I am currently a full time infection preventionist at a hospital. which is a job that requires an education focused mindset as I am always teaching best practice and reminding practitioners of their duties to protect patients from infection. It may come as no surprise that my ideal subject to teach is biology or microbiology as they are both my passions. I've spent many years learning the theory and then putting that theory to practice. My outgoing personality and passion for education is evident when first meeting me. I aim to use these qualities about myself to engage my students and get them excited about learning. Outside of work I enjoy reading fiction books, going to lots of outdoor events, and finding new recipes to make.

I am working on a double bachelors degree for liberal arts and biomedical engineering. I have a strong suit in math and physics but I am well versed in the surrounding subjects because of my liberal arts education. I am very passionate about math and science because I will be using it in the future for my own research which I hope benefits the humans as a race. I seek to help students improve their skills with physics and especially math because it is very vital and apparent in most activities in the world and being proficient in the language of math makes life feel much easier while giving a strong sense of accomplishment.
My passion for education is driven by a commitment to fostering intellectual curiosity and critical thinking among my students. With a Master's degree in Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School and a Bachelor's in Sociology from Ohio Wesleyan University, I have over 5 years of teaching experience in Political Science and Public Administration at Savannah State University. I specialize in AP U.S. Government & Politics, College Level American History, and High School Government, using an interactive and student-centered approach to make complex concepts accessible and relatable. I believe in creating a supportive environment where students feel empowered to engage with the material and express their ideas. Each tutoring session is an opportunity to inspire growth and academic success, reinforcing my dedication to their educational journeys.

I have taught both English and computer science for years. In that time, it became obvious that individual conferences and small groups were the most effective way to learn for many of us. That led me to tutoring. Learning holds power, and I want to help others on their learning journeys. I strive myself to continue learning. I am currently learning Spanish and SQL.
My experiences as a Teacher and Teacher leader have built my ability to be reflective on my practice and adapt everything I do to data driven and research based methods. These methods create a more student-centered environment. My current position is a teaching American History and AP United States history at a high school in the Columbus area. I previously was a Instructional Coach and head of a Social Studies department in Chicago. My work in underserved communities has been an important part of my growth as a teacher leader. I want to tutor and continue my work and impact learning outside of schools focusing on students and growth. As a Social Studies teacher I have adapted my practice to balance history content and reading skills based on the needs of my students. Using Common Core standards, the new SAT standards, and now Ohio History standards I have aligned my curriculum to help all students grow their textual analysis to foster their development as critical thinkers. I emphasize content skills like sourcing, corroboration, and contextualization support student's textual analysis. Alignment with assessments can come from this skills based teaching. I use data collection to target high leverage interventions and promote student reading growth.I strive to build my classroom on high expectations and high support. My tutoring is no different. I operate with the belief that all students can learn. Genuine differentiation starts with strong relationships, student centered instruction, and standards aligned curriculum. Using engagement strategies and varying instruction are key ways I differentiate for my students.I have collaborated with members of our student support team to enrich student's individualized educations. All individual students with varying abilities, backgrounds, and motivations benefit when the rigor level of assignments and assessments is appropriate for them.

My Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Ohio Wesleyan University has enabled me to flourish in various capital markets functions over the past three decades. As a trader, salesman, and risk manager within the fixed income markets I have had to make pragmatic, non-theoretical business decisions on a daily basis. As a Varsity Tutor I will take the same pragmatic approach and attempt to ensure that you as the student not only arrive at the correct conclusion, but grasp the underpinnings of your decision. You will not just answer the question correctly but will be in possession of the deliberative thought process that impelled you to that correct answer. We all want the correct answer, we all want the 100% score; that is a given. But if you can obtain the correct answer AND develop a thought process that can be employed again and again to solve future problems then you have truly added to your knowledge base. My overall teaching philosophy is to engage the student and attempt to point out certain real world applications to material that one may deem (admittedly) sometimes a bit dry. The link from the lecture hall to the job place will keep one engaged and hopefully keep one focused on the ultimate goal: a higher base of knowledge that will better enable one to fully rise to his or her full potential.
