I graduated from the University of Mount Union with a Bachelors of Science with a major in Biology and Chemistry, also a minor in economics and art. I then earned my PhD at Vanderbilt University in Microbiology. Now I work as a research professor at Harvard University's Rowland Institute. I have a passion for science and really enjoy helping others understand it. I tutor in biology, chemistry, math, and art. The last one is because I am a visual learner and have had a lifetime of learning to illustrate complex ideas into something understandable. I can touter for GRE and GRE Biology subject tests. I like to use inquiry based learning strategies to help students discover the answers they are looking for; just like scientists do everyday. In addition to being passionate about science and science education I really enjoy traveling, cooking (and eating), reading books, singing, hanging outwit my family, and-of course-drawing.

I am a graduate of The University of Mount Union where I received my Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education. I furthered my education at Franciscan University and received my Master's degree in Education and Reading. Since graduation, I have taught 10+ years as a kindergarten teacher but have recent experience with 3rd grade students! I am passionate about student success in all areas but especially reading. My approach to teaching young minds is to do it in a variety of ways, depending on each student's learning styles and interests! We are all different learners and I love to harvest that for each student. I like to add music, physical activity, movement, and fun to all of my lessons! In addition to having fun while learning, I have clear expectations and manage behavior and time wisely. I absolutely love teaching/tutoring students! In my spare time, I enjoy family time spent with my husband, children, and pets. We spend much of our time outdoors and staying busy.
I have been in the field of education for my entire professional career. I started by teaching for 5 years in public school at the elementary level. I graduated from the University of Mount Union with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History with a focus in Education. I found tutoring to be a really enjoyable and rewarding experience when I tutored during my undergraduate time at the local middle school (which is part of the grade levels I am certified to teach). Even though I am capable of tutoring most areas of Social Studies I have a real passion for American History and Civics. I believe that each child has the right to an exceptional education. My tutoring philosophy reflects my desire to educate all students regardless of race, gender, or economic status. As an educator, it is my responsibility and desire to help each student meet their fullest potential. I plan to educate the whole child; emotionally, socially, physically, and cognitively. I plan to match my tutoring strategies to the learning style of each student. I will differentiate my lessons to make them relevant to all students. I am an avid Cleveland sports fan, always rooting for my hometown's sports teams. I love being active outside and in the gym. And at the end of the day I do love to relax and watch either a funny movie or reading a comic.

Hello! My name is Miss Julia Mansfield, and I am so excited to meet you and work with you! I have recently graduated from the University of Mount Union, where I obtained Bachelor's of Arts degrees in Primary Education, K-12th Grade Mild/Moderate Intervention, and Spanish. I also studied music throughout my whole life! I have had many wonderful opportunities to work with many students in a variety of different areas and school districts. I completed my student teaching as a long-term substitute in a K-3rd grade intervention and a general education first grade classroom. I have experience teaching in one-on-one, small-group, and whole-group settings, and I have taught math, language arts, reading, writing, phonics, social studies, and a little bit of science. I also have experience in the intervention field, as I was a Registered Behavioral Technician for two years. I supported students during an extended school year camp to help prepare them for a general education classroom in the fall, and also helped students strengthen their self care, social interaction and communication, and school readiness skills. In addition, I volunteered at my local library for many years, where I assisted students entering kindergarten through 3rd grade with their decoding and reading comprehension skills. I am currently certified in Ohio to teach preschool through 5th grade general education as well as kindergarten through 12th grade mild/moderate intervention. As part of my college coursework, I completed Pathway A, a professional development opportunity that helps educators become more experienced with the Science of Reading. This, along with my college coursework and teaching experiences, helped me refine my teaching practices and use best teaching practices when working with students. One of the reasons that I decided to be a teacher was because I love watching my students progress, grow, and gain confidence and independence with their learning. I am very excited to have the opportunity to work with you, get to know you, learn with you, and grow with you!

My love of physics and math began when I was 3 years old, watching Julius Sumner Miller do physics experiments on TV. I discovered my love of teaching as an undergrad at the University of Mount Union, where I served as a teaching assistant in the intro physics labs. It was so thrilling to help students reach "a-ha" moments where everything clicks! I was hooked, and I've been teaching ever since! After earning my Bachelor's in physics with minors in mathematics and music, I went to Bryn Mawr College for graduate school, where I earned my Master's studying dark matter, and my Ph.D. studying atomic physics. While I was there, I taught in various labs, ran problem solving sessions for the pre-med physics course, and tutored several students one-on-one. After graduating, I spent three years as a visiting professor at Austin College. I think the best way to learn something is to DO it, so my teaching style is focused on helping my students actively engage with the material. I like to have back-and-forth conversations with my students to see where they are with the material, and to help guide them to a deeper understanding. I also like to use lots of examples, demos, and hands-on activities to help solidify abstract concepts.
I tutor Japanese language and occasionally Japanese culture along with it. I am a graduate of the University of Mount Union, earning my Bachelor of Arts in Japanese Language and Culture, and a Graduate of Ohio University in Athens with a Master of Arts in Asian Studies. During my third year attending Mount Union (2017), I studied abroad in Nagasaki, Japan, from late March to early August.I have worked teaching 7th to 9th-grade students Japanese for a program in my hometown called Kids in College. During my time working within the program, I asked what the students wanted to learn, and improvised my schedule to their choice of what they would learn. Between 2018 and 2020, I was involved with the Japanese Cultural Hour at Ohio University. This included scheduling events, fundraisers, and planning budgets for the year. During my time working at the Japanese Cultural Hour, an important goal was to introduce Japanese and American students, exchanging cultural and linguistic information, and especially creating long-lasting friendships.I enjoy being able to pass on my knowledge to students who are eager to learn about the language, as well as share my personal experiences and offer advice to those interested in doing study abroad programs in the future. To plan my sessions for teaching or tutoring students, I first test their level of proficiency, then ask what they would like to learn before the end of their teaching or tutoring sessions with me. I employ creative activities to engage my students and employ the use of educational videos for students to be given an understanding of the different aspects of Japanese culture. In my spare time, I love to attend choral performances (if any are occurring), lead the congregation by singing for my local church, drawing and taking nature pictures while walking in nearby parks.
For 12 years, I have been a teacher and leader in the field of education. Integrating technology and new techniques that tailor to my students' needs has been my #1 priority. Throughout my time as an educator, I have taught in grades ranging from 3 to 6, and also have field experience with 1st and 2nd graders. I have a great passion for working with children of all ages and enjoy helping them reach their full potential. My interests include sports, jigsaw puzzles, and animals; chasing around my 2 year old is also a plus and helps keep me alert and energized! I hope to meet you soon!
I am currently working on my Bachelor's in writing from the University of Mount Union, with minors in Art, Psychology, and German. I have formal experience tutoring beginning cello players. I have also worked with peers informally tutoring subjects relating to English and history, which are my favorite subjects to tutor. I believe that my role is to help students find the answers they need and then develop ways to remember the content or work with the content in meaningful ways for the future. It is a partnership for the purpose of the students achieving the best work as possible. Outside of academics, I enjoy crafting, reading, writing, photography, and listening or creating music.
