Hi, I am Crystal Johnson. I was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio and I am a true BUCKEYE (Go Bucks!). I have a long-standing interest and experience in education. I personally have an MBA and own a small business so I have the educational background matched with the real-world experience to help those at all levels! Because of my love of education, I've always sought opportunities to teach. I worked in the school system for several years as a substitute teacher for grades K-12. In addition, I've taught classes in management, sales, and geography at a local community college. I also operated the youth programming and homework lab for students K-8th grade through church. You can trust me with your tutoring needs because I have a genuine love for education. I would make a great tutor because I am extremely patient. I love to see the look on a persons face when they actually get it. I would love to help you to leap the hurdles and stay on the path to academic success!

I spent four months studying abroad in Costa Rice in order to learn Spanish, after which I tutored other Spanish students who were attending Mount Vernon Nazarene University. I have also translated a handbook, and the department section of a quarterly newsletter from English to Spanish.I have worked with children on a volunteer basis all my life. I have worked with all age groups as a Sunday School Teacher, Youth Worker, and Children's Director. I am able to make the learning process so much fun that the children think it is a game and don't realize how much they are learning.I have working with groups of all the same age, and with various ages from preschool to fourth grade all at the same time. I am able to keep everyone engaged even with age disparity. I am also able to maintain control of the classroom regardless of age ranges.I have worked as a Spanish preschool teacher and as a school age teacher at a latch-key program most recently. I love teaching the children and look forward to each day and each new challenge.
I have a Masters of Arts in Teaching and Learning with Teaching and Technology degree from Kaplan University. I also have a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Mount Vernon University. Since graduating, I work in technology support as well as teaching technology to adults. I also work as a substitute teacher with grades Pre-k through 12th. I cover any and all subjects needed filled. I mostly enjoy working with grades 1st through 5th in history, math, and English. I am a true believer that students learn best by having fun by using hands on with a teacher who is also having fun and showing lots of excitement. During my off time, I like to visit historical sites. I also like to read and watch documentaries on American history.
Math can be challenging! As a middle school math teacher with 14 years of experience, I know this to be true. My love for teaching and learning inspired me to change careers in my late 30s. Going back to college to get a teaching degree was one of the best decisions I ever made. I received my bachelor's degree from The Ohio State University (Go Bucks!!) and my master's degree from the Mount Vernon Nazarene University. My areas of expertise/licensure are middle school math and social studies, and I am certified to teach grades 4-9 for both subjects.I love teaching and especially enjoy witnessing my students finally "get" a new skill after encountering some struggles along the way. I currently teach 6th grade math, and about one-third of my students each year are enrolled in a second class with me each day that reinforces and reteaches concepts they are having difficulty mastering. This second math "Discovery" class allows me to work one-on-one and in small groups to help students succeed. In addition to being a middle school teacher, I also have three years' experience tutoring, both one-on-one and in small groups, in an after school program. My philosophy of teaching is that I believe every student can learn math; some just learn it more quickly than others. I like to use the example of learning to walk. For an infant, being able to walk is a really huge accomplishment, especially given the size of an infant's head in comparison to the size of his or her body! For some infants, walking comes quickly, at say nine months; for others, it comes much later, but all babies eventually learn to walk. The same goes for learning math. Some students catch on to a topic quickly and easily, while others need more time and practice, but all students can absolutely learn math.My teaching practices include the following: an "I do, we do, you do" approach; the use of scaffolding (starting with basic problems and adding elements as each step is mastered); and, finally, using formative assessment (quick problem checks) to ensure my students understand each math concept.I look forward to working with you in the Varisity Tutor platform!
