Session Summaries by SAT Tutors

SAT Tutoring review by Victoria in Plainfield, IL
We began by going over the student's goals and questions about the test in general. He is going to college through a military program, so he needs to look into any specific requirements within that. He is not sure where he wants to go for college, so he plans to take both the SAT and the ACT. We worked on vocabulary in the verbal section for the first half of this session and math for the second half. The student does well with making reasonable guesses in reading questions he doesn't know for sure, but he definitely needs to build his vocabulary for this section. We gathered about fifteen words with definitions and memory cues for him to memorize this week. I also walked him through the process of identifying the most important information in the sentence for these questions -- looking to see if words should be similar or contrast, finding mini-definitions within the sentence, and looking for positive or negative connotations. In the math section, the student knows most of the information needed to solve each problem, but he has difficulty forming an approach. We talked about working toward exactly what the question asks for and streamlining the process in some questions. In general, I think that if the student approaches the problems with confidence, he will be able to find a solution. We will keep working in this section so he gets used to the format of the math questions.

SAT Tutoring review by Jennifer in Plainfield, IL
The student and I spent the first part of this session going over more math questions. Some questions he answered correctly on his own, and others took very little explaining to help him understand. Some other questions, however, took a lot of extra explaining. There was one question that had a Venn diagram, where you had to answer how many numbers were in the intersection of two of the three circles. It took a long time to explain to him how to answer this question. I drew a picture of a different Venn diagram that used dots in it instead of numbers, to show how two circles could share things at the same time. At one point he seemed to understand everything I had said, but was still unable to answer the question. He was finally able to understand the question after 10 or so minutes of me trying to help him with it. We spent the last part of the session going over his past three essays that I (after editing them) had brought back with me. The one where he wrote about what pet he wants overall was pretty good. We went over any grammar mistakes he made and any sentences where a different word order would make more sense than the order he had used. He asked for help in how to write a conclusion, and I told him that it should just be a good wrap-up of the rest of the essay.
