SAT Tutoring review by Walter in Shorewood, IL
The student did a practice test where she scored in the high 600s for both Writing and Critical Reading. Math remains a problem area, but she has shown consistent improvement and will continue to improve. She is developing her own structure and emphasis for studying for this exam--this is essential for achieving high scores. She is doing very well--she just has to do a little more to be in the 700s consistently.

SAT Tutoring review by Chandler in Shorewood, IL
We continued to review a practice test she took in December, especially focusing on the passage-based questions. SAT Tutoring review by Xuan in Shorewood, IL
In this session, the student and I worked on sentence completion questions in the reading section of the SAT. We talked about how, for most questions, he could think of his own word or idea to fill in the blank, and then look for the answer choice that best matched this. He did a good job using the context of each sentence to think of his own word; however, he sometimes had trouble selecting from the answer choices - particularly if he was unfamiliar with the definition of one or more answers. We practiced finding word roots in unfamiliar words to better understand their meaning, thinking about the context in which he might have heard an unfamiliar word, and eliminating answer choices for sentence completions with two blanks based on one of the blanks. If the context of a sentence suggests that the missing word should have either a positive or negative connotation, he can also think about the connotations of each of the answer choices. We also talked about how he should avoid choosing an answer just because it is the only word he is familiar with - instead, based on knowing the meaning of that answer choice, he might be able to eliminate it and choose from the remaining answers. For more practice, I recommended that he use a vocabulary website which includes similar sentence-completion questions. Ideally, he can create an online account to keep track of his progress.
