SAT Tutoring review by Rachael in Lisle, IL
Today we spent most of the session in coached practice questions. We began by reviewing her assigned homework (finding 3-4 word clusters to increase vocab and doing assigned content review for math and writing), which she had completed successfully and did not have any questions on. She reported that the word clusters and the grammar review in particular were helpful. She will attempt to memorize one word cluster per day between now and Saturday. We then moved on to math and reviewed strategies specific to multiple choice vs. grid-in questions, and then applied these strategies to sample problems in the book. We identified that she does better when using her calculator for all arithmetic, and brushed up on proper calculator input and usage. We then spent the rest of the session doing a "mock" practice test, where we started with entering demographic information in the answer booklet, and then talked through timing and approaches for each of the nine sections in the practice test. She began working, timed, on a critical reading section and a math section, and will continue working in that practice test before our next session. We finished up by talking about the importance of confidence on test day.
