Reading Tutoring review by Penni in Summit, IL
The student told me that he received a 100 on the exam over The Outsiders. We then went over the literary terms he had been given to review for the final exam. We were able to use characters and themes seen in The Outsiders to exemplify the terms he was studying.

Reading Tutoring review by Amy in Summit, IL
After completing his free writing, cursive practice, and syllabication exercises, we discussed the student's progress report that showed an improvement in every class but science. We spent some time discussing his difficulties in science and we'll go over some of his notes & handouts, in order to show him how to annotate and find the most important material. We spent the rest of our session working on thesis statements, since the writing assessment is next week and the student is still learning about thesis statements on a worksheet from English class. I taught him a simple equation to get a thesis statement: topic + claim = thesis. We created several simple theses and he had to label the topic and claim in each one. Then we used two writing prompts and created a thesis statement for each, and added a "because clause" to strengthen the claim. We'll continue with thesis statements this week: the student stated that this method was very easy for him to complete.

Reading Tutoring review by Rebecca in Summit, IL
In this session, we worked with the student's new coursework. Beginning with the history of the English language, we annotated a brief article and discussed the new learning in order to reinforce it. We listened to Old and Middle English readings of Beowulf and The Canterbury Tales, respectively, in order to hear the difference between the two. We discussed the influence of French upon Old English and the Great Vowel Shift that progressed Early Modern English. Secondly, we worked through specific aspects of etymology by discussing Greek and Latin prefixes, suffixes, and roots and planned to make note cards to study the student's assigned coursework in this content area. Finally, we discussed slang, accents, and dialects, and decided on the goals of our next session.
