The student was struggling most with the concept of functions (x, f(x)). The student seemed to be interested in solving these problems once she got a better idea of the material. We used a lot of graphs to explain intercepts, roots, and functions. I left her with a few problems for practice.

We worked on finding factors of numbers. Using factor trees was helpful. The student came to our session saying his math was completed on the bus. We talked about how the environment in which you do your homework is important. We discussed how the bus can be a loud and distracting environment in addition to a bumpy ride that is hard to write. Fact families also works on building his multiplication facts.

Student 1 worked on adding fractions. I advised her to slow down and concentrate on the task at hand to avoid small mistakes. Student 2 is working on memorizing her two multiplication facts. She did a hundred questions in about 6 and a half minutes. Ideally, I would like her to do a hundred questions in about 5 and a half minutes. I left her with practice problems and flashcards. We introduced 3's and will start adding those in to start memorizing those facts.

We reviewed how to write an equation from a story problem and solve. We reviewed how to translate perimeter problems into equations and solve them. We also reviewed how to identify how many solutions an equation has. I also gave the student a quick cheat sheet to study from. I reminded him that he cannot guess but needs to solve each equation. We then reviewed how to transform formulas and reviewed how to solve the Problem of the Week he was assigned. We spent an additional 15 minutes of tutoring time correcting mistakes on his study guide. He is eager to learn but tries to solve problems mentally without writing all of the steps down. I will be working with him on that.
